If anyone cares, since the vaccine came out, urbanization and density really tell the story. NJ has high urbanization so they could spread it more easily, but as the state vaccinated, it won’t be nearly as disastrous as Florida, who has a lower urbanization rate but higher density. Florida was less likely to spread the virus, but since no one got vaccinated, that advantage was squandered and will end up with more deaths by a large margin. When you compare other states, it starts to paint a pretty clear picture.

The whole Obama/Christie hug thing. Cuomo did a pretty good job of reminding people of that reality when Trump tried it during the pandemic.
