My brother’s money was spread out on 3 ocean front properties in Florida and the rest was spread out in mutual funds. He took a slight hit in 2008 but didn’t lose his ass. Basically, my dad told him that he had too much money and had to park it in properties.

Right, we don’t know what Andy gained and lost over the last 30 years. That’s an unknown. You could probably take a few good guesses if he was strictly in mutual funds. Andy wasn’t one to take risks, so I always assumed he had everything spread out and never took any huge hits. I don’t know that for sure. All I know is the dude is still riding his bike around town with no worries.

There was that one shooting from that Saudi kid at the military base. I can’t remember where that was. I believe he was recently tried and convicted.

Well, there was that one last Muslim attack in California where the feds wanted Apple to unlock the iPhone and refused. They then sent the phone to Israel and later claimed they were able to get into that phone. They never did. It was an IPhone 4. They basically ate ***** on that one. Since then, it’s all been white nationalist shootings in this country. Dozens of them including the terrorist attack on the “people’s house.”
-
Not nearly as many as right wing terrorist attacks in our own country. You’re right! People need to take a step back and put it altogether.
-
But if we get most of these people out, no one is going to remember a minor blip. When I left the house, it was a bunch of Afghans on their phones waiting for the next plane to come. I think you might be sensationalizing this to some degree.

I actually did. I think it would’ve helped him in his re-election. Lots of my alt/right friends and people in the middle said the same thing. He ran on that. He didn’t deliver. The dude was so scared about his poll numbers. Most people don’t realize how obsessed he was with polling.

I think you’re laying back and taking political shots but you agree it had to happen. It was never going to be pretty. I actually think it’s pretty ballsy move by Biden and when presidents do that, they’re often rewarded later.

It was pretty widely covered that it would only take a month or two. They moved right in because Trump was so deliberate with his actions. I’m not saying it was wrong to do that, but none is this is surprising to anyone. Trump should’ve done this in his first year in office and then ran on the fact that he pulled out. He was scared to do it because the guy gets terrified by polls.

The plan was a holy war. White Christian conservatives under attack. Now they’re pretending that they care about Afghan women’s rights to score very short term political points.
-
Don’t forget Obama’s deliberate diversion to focus on the “actual” terrorists to get out of Iraq. What a mess!

I have my Publix nest egg but that isn’t publicly traded. Other than that, it’s cash.

What I’m experiencing now is how family members(gf) act when someone passes away. All of a sudden family members get really greedy and entitled and think something is owed to them and tension starts. Then you find out the granddaughter has been getting 10k “gifted” over the last 5 years. it’s an ugly situation that rips families apart. I don’t want to be involved with any of that in my family.
-
I am. My gf will be the one with a NJ teachers pension. I think we might be ok. The HC system cleans everyone out at some point but there isn’t anything we can really do about that. When you get old, you get scared and listen to doctors and they clean your clock. That’s not even factoring in the whole retirement home business. What I can say is this, and I know you disagree, but where you live is going to become really important in the next 20 years. This is where I fear that your ideology will do you harm.

I’m a Holdem player. You can’t lose what you don’t put into the pot. If I lose, I want it to be because I made a mistake, not a bunch of outside factors. Inflation is just the rake increasing or decreasing.
-
Creating your own can be affected by the market and 10 years from now you could be the homeless guy on the corner of Nebraska and Bearss Avenue in Tampa walking up to my window telling me about the time you used to work on Wall St.

Anyone younger than me doesn’t have a clue. That’s because loyalty to companies no longer matters. Millennials figured this out. That’s why you see people leaving jobs like it’s nothing. I applaud them for that. The problem is that they’re all broke. That’s not at all how people lived in the 80’s. That’s why it’s so important to move to a blue state and learn a trade, join a union, teach, and get that pension. Everyone else is eventually going to starve.

We both learned the lesson from my dad and found niche businesses and got out early and can enjoy the rest of our lives. My personal situation doesn’t mean that I don’t want other people to have better lives. The greed and resentment from this board is horrifying.
-
I think you’re flailing at this point.

I’m out of ways to hint to you that I don’t ever have to work again. I’m trying to be modest here.

How far we’ve fallen as a country. It’s truly amazing that some of you have this mindset. If I remember correctly, he was given the choice to risk it and stay or take a retirement package. Now, if you’re my age, you should remember the ups and downs IBM and other companies had during that period. Again, I feel like I’m talking to someone at least 5 years younger than me. We’re you still eating Play-doh during that era?
-
He was expecting a better retirement package like everyone else that worked for huge corporations throughout the 70’s and 80’s. Were you not born here? It seems like we grew up in parallel universes but you claim to be the same age.
-
What did he do? My dad came out of the navy for electronics, joined IBM, then became a contract writer before ending up as upper management. He was pushed into early retirement with a not so great retirement package in the early 90’s. I’m sure it’s pretty good, but not what he expected for 30 years of loyal service. My dad actually wrote the huge contracts for the IBM PC. Some nerds might know about that story. My dad knew it was a mistake at the time also. The whole IBM/Bill Gates thing. I remember my dad coming home always bitching about the IBM PCs. They actually teach about that in every college “Intro to PCs” class now. He would tell you you’re doing it wrong also.

I’m in the center. Commie Kay is on the left, and the rest of you are way off the reservation right and can no longer recognize center. I haven’t moved. I see that. They need lots of care and lots of veterinary care. That might be a FT job. Will the vet come to your house or do I have to bring the goats to them?

It’s going to take decades to clean up Trump’s mess. This is what happens when you mix Rand Paul-style isolationism with incompetence. Luckily, the voters recognize this. They just have to keep the right mouth’s fed and it should work perfectly.
