Is there any real training camp news?
Logic replied to CEN-CAL17's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I could be wrong here, but I believe rolling unused cap into next year is a thing. With next year’s cap set to be so wonky, the Bills could probably use the 7 mil. -

As long as no one hits the hospitality tent, we're good. -

It won't be like most years, where we get highly specific play-by-plays, daily highlight videos, epic eyewitness camp reports, and QB stats.... But we WILL be getting some practice highlights, snippets, info, and initial depth charts within the next few days. Refer to coverage of the Jets, Seahawks, etc that has been taking place the past few days. -
Horrible Harry...the forgotten man?
Logic replied to BillsPride12's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
At the time that he got hurt last year, Harry was outplaying Star at 1T and beginning to take snaps from him. Comparing Jordan (3T) to Harry (1T) is useless since they play different positions. Here’s hoping a Harry/Butler combo can hold it down at 1T this year. -

I’ll be interested to see if Epenesa and Bam Johnson show enough to allow them to cut Murphy. I wouldn’t advocate for cutting Murphy if it were not for next year’s bizarre cap situation. Between that and the need to sign White, Milano, and (soon enough, hopefully) Josh Allen, they could really use the money they’d be saving by cutting him. Strong play be Epenesa could allow it, in the same way that strong play by Singletary allowed them to cut Shady. -

As people have already pointed out, pads come on tomorrow and the media is allowed in. Based on the daily reports from other teams who have already entered this phase, there will be at least a few daily morsels of information. I've been following the "Training camp updates" thread on Jet Nation forums. Gotta look in on the opposition. Spoiler alert: everyone on their team has soft tissue injuries, their WR corps is decimated, and they're all saying "calm down, it's only training camp". Fun times in Jersey. -
Breaking news: Dawkins signs four year deal worth $60 mill
Logic replied to BillsMafi$'s topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yep. Don’t let 24-year-old All-Pros at premium positions (who are also exemplary locker room, culture, and community fits) walk out the door. Aside from it being a huge asset ON the field, it’s also important that Beane sets the example that guys who go about their business like Tre get paid. The first pick of the McDermott era. Best player on the team. You pay that man. -

I agree with this. If if it’s true that a team can afford 6-7 big contracts on their team — and that DOES seem to be the case around the league — I see Oliver, White, and Edmunds on defense and Allen (hopefully), Diggs, And TBD on offense. For now, it’s Dawkins, but he’s not making huge, prohibitive money. Everyone else is mix ‘n’ match. -
I’m telling you, the Jets have an awful situation at WR right now. Today at camp, with Mims and Vincynt Smith sidelined with injury, the top two WRs were Breshad Perriman and Jeff Smith. That’s ugly.

I find any notion that third year 3rd rounder Harrison Phillips could be cut to be unrealistic. If he somehow doesn’t recover from his injury, then I suppose it’s POSSIBLE, but even in that instance, you’d assume they’d put him on IR. But cutting him outright? I don’t see it. I view it as much more likely that they want to really ease Phillips back in slowly, so they’ve brought in a bevy of DTs to take camp and practice reps. It’s also always good for teams to keep their “short lists” up to date, so that if anything goes wrong in-season, they have ready replacement FAs. I think that’s ESPECIALLY wise this year, due to COVID.

Josh Allen’s offense vs Sam Darnold’s offense
Logic replied to Logic's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Thanks for this. Interesting to hear a Jets fan’s perspective on things. I felt the same about Mr Wilson. I remember very clearly the day I read the chapter in Marv Levy’s book where he states that the only way for a team or organization to have sustained success is to have great ownership in place. In Marv’s view, Everything flows down from the owner, and if you don’t have a good owner, well...good luck! The reason I remember reading that so clearly is that Mr Wilson was still the owner at the time, and that quite depressed me. I felt that as long as he continued to be the owner, the Bills would never again have sustained success. Folks can say what they want about the Pegulas — Lord knows the Sabres have been a mess — but they have done everything possible so far to enable the Bills to be winners. Money, resources, facilities, spending big on coaches and scouts, hiring Beane and then letting him do his job. So far, at least, signs are encouraging. -
Josh Allen’s offense vs Sam Darnold’s offense

Don't get me wrong -- I like Joe Douglas. I think he'll be a good GM for the Jets. I also like Sam Darnold. Regrettably, however, the circumstances leading up to and including this season are simply not ideal in terms of fostering the growth of a young QB. Being on his second head coach and third offensive coordinator is not ideal. Losing both Quincy Enunwa and Robby Anderson is not ideal. Having to depend on a rookie WR for major contributions in a year where there is no pre-season is not ideal. Entering such a pivotal year while playing behind a completely new offensive line is not ideal. I like Douglas, and I think he'll eventually right the ship. At THIS MOMENT IN TIME, though, I feel the conditions around Darnold are much less than ideal. I also feel that since the Jets lack edge rushers and cornerbacks and since Mosley is not playing and Adams flew the coup, the defense will regress, and the Jets likely won't win many games. The combination of the poor infrastructure around Darnold and the likely regression of the defense seems as though it might hinder his progression as a QB, and given that Joe Douglas was not the man that chose Darnold to begin with, it may lead the Jets to at least flirt with dipping their toes back into the quarterback market next offseason -- something which would ALSO not be ideal, given the lack of college season. Maybe I'm dead wrong, Darnold will flourish, and I'll have to eat crow. At the end of the day, I'm simply saying that I much prefer what the Bills have done around Josh Allen to what the Jets have done around Sam Darnold. I feel that most Jets fans, if they're being honest, would prefer what Allen has around him to what Darnold has, too. -
Josh Allen’s offense vs Sam Darnold’s offense

Yeah. I'll say they are either even with the Bills or better than the Bills at QB, RB, and TE. The Jets can not reasonably claim that their offensive line is as good as Buffalo's since they have not yet seen them play. Even on a projection basis, though, I'm not very impressed with some of the players they brought in. I'm not convinced, for instance, that Van Roten will be an upgrade over Brian Winters. I'm also not convinced that George Fant will be a starting caliber RT, fi that's what they're counting on him to be. As for the defense, I will concede that the Jets' interior DL is as good as or better than Buffalo's. That's about all I'll give them on defense. The Bills have superior edge rushers, linebackers, cornerbacks, and safeties. So the Jets, in my opinion, have a case at QB, RB, TE, and interior DL. In none of those cases do I feel like the Jets definitely have the edge, but they certainly MAY, and it's at least reasonable to say they're even. WR, Edge, ILB, OLB, CB, FS, SS...all Buffalo. Crucially, the units in which the Jets are lacking in talent -- offensive line, edge rushers, and cornerbacks -- are all CRITICAL to success in today's NFL. If you can't block, can't rush the passer, and can't cover the opposition's receivers, you're not going to win many ball games. So it's not just that they lack talent, it's that they lack talent at very important positions. This is how I see it, at least. I'm with you. I don't feel nearly as strongly about the players they brought in to rebuild their offensive line. They all seem like second tier guys to me. By contrast, Morse was a high quality acquisition and even Quinton Spain was/is better than the guards they've brought in, in my opinion. Yep. The Jets did it exactly backwards: They're paying big money to their running back, but they've put a mediocre or worse offensive line in front of him. I'd much rather spend big money on the offensive line and then plug in a running back. I don't expect Bell to have a very good career as a New York Jet, at least until they convincingly improve their offensive line. -
Is there anyone in the NFL more pompous, arrogant, and douchey than Gregggggg Williams?

Josh Allen’s offense vs Sam Darnold’s offense
Logic replied to Logic's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I wanted to add that I was poking around on their message board just now and saw a poster state that the Jets roster is "even with the Bills" in all but the secondary and WR corps. -
In reading about the Denzel Mims hamstring injury, I can’t help but reflect on how much better a position the Bills have put Josh Allen in that what the Jets have done for Darnold. Josh Allen is going into the all-important year three with the same offensive coordinator and head coach, an offensive line returning 4 of 5 starters, and a WR corps of Stefon Diggs, John Brown, and Cole Beasley, with two promising young rookies waiting in the wings. Sam Darnold is going into the all-important year three under his second head coach and third offensive coordinator. His offensive line will likely feature new starters at all five spots, several of whom are replacement level journeyman types. Their WR corps features Breshad Perriman, Denzel Mims, And Jamison Crowder. Gone are both Robby Anderson and Quincy Enunwa. Whereas the Bills are counting on proven stud Stefon Diggs to be their number 1 receiver, the Jets are counting on...Perriman, I guess? Whereas the Bills can ease their rookie receivers along slowly and don’t need to count on them immediately, the Jets NEED their rookie WR to be good immediately or else their offense is in trouble. It’s hard for WRs to be mega-productive even in the best of circumstances, but counting on one to produce after missing time with injury and having no preseason is asking quite a lot. For years, I watched the Bills put their young QBs in bad situations that sabotaged their development. For once, it’s nice to watch a division rival do the same, while the Bills do everything possible to build around their youngster. Soooo glad I’m not a Jets fan. What they’re doing to Darnold is downright criminal.

Imagine trying to be optimistic about your football team when the owner is Woody Johnson, the offense is run by Adam Gase, and the defense is run by Gregg Williams. Yuck. Couldn't be me.

Anybody who is questioning this extension for any reason clearly does not fully understand the context surrounding it. Prior to McDermott's arrival, the Bills were a laughingstock for two decades. Their reputation around the league was absolutely AWFUL. Before McDermott showed up, the phrases "toxic culture" and "dumpster fire" were used by national outlets to describe the Bills. In just three seasons, McDermott COMPLETELY overhauled the team culture and reputation, such that players now WANT to come to Buffalo. The Bills are now universally acknowledged as being an up-and-coming, well-coached team with a top notch team culture. While the credit for turning over the roster should go to Brandon Beane, and the credit for being willing to pour money and resources into the team should go to the Pegulas, the credit for turning around the TEAM CULTURE should go almost entirely to Sean McDermott. Yes, Beane did a great job bringing in players that fit McDermott's vision, but it was coach McDermott himself who instilled the discipline, set the tone, and established what this team IS and WILL BE in the years to come. To just look at his record of 25-23 or to just look at the Bills offensive performance, or his occasional game day blunders, or whatever other aspects of his resume one wants to look at to conclude that the extension was premature or unwarranted, is to completely ignore or disregard the surrounding context. Sean McDermott, in just three years, turned the Bills from perpetual laughingstocks with a toxic culture into perpetual contenders with an elite team culture. It's impossible to overstate what a complete 180 the Bills organization has done under his leadership. He deserves every penny, and the extension did not come a moment too soon.

The modern day Butch Rolle, one might say. -
His new contract is highway robbery by the 49ers. As I understand it, he’s making less than Sammy Watkins and Brandin Cooks. Criminally low contract for one of the top 10 offensive weapons in the game.

I'm on board with your opinion overall, but the bolded is untrue. Williams is a former 2nd team All-Pro at RT. Last year, his only year playing primarily guard -- and granted, he was coming off a serious injury -- he did not perform well. If Ford has shown clear improvement at right tackle, then yes, that's where you play him. That's what you drafted him to be, so you want to give him every opportunity to succeed there. IF, however, Daryl Williams has returned to form and is showing the potential to return to a 2nd team All-Pro level at RT, they ought to let him start at that position. I am of the opinion that Cody Ford can be a good, league average right tackle. I believe he can be an All-Pro level player at guard, though. In short, let Ford PROVE that he can play right tackle better than Nsekhe and Williams. If he can't, let him play right guard.

I didn't see it mentioned anywhere so far, but I wanted to point out that there was a clause in McDermott's new contract stating that any players joining the Bills roster going forward must have wrestled in either high school or college and must own at least three pieces of camouflage clothing. In all seriousness, I DID read that he's going to be paid per clap, so the contract could get pretty lucrative pretty quickly.
