Beane: “working on at least 2 veteran UFA’s”
HappyDays replied to Warriorspikes51's topic in The Stadium Wall
I know that one is RB Latavius Murrary. I heard he will be signed as early as tomorrow. -
I think we greatly improved some of our less important pieces - Kumerow, McKenzie, Saffold, Morris. But I still worry about the lack of true top end talent. Right now to start the year it is still just Allen and Diggs as elite players at their positions. A lot of it will depend on how Von Miller recovers. Hopefully by December he'll be the same player he was for us before injury, I mean he practically won the Chiefs game for us. If we get him back to his old self that gives us three elite players. Ideally though you want at least four. Maybe Tre White will find himself again, I'm just not counting on it. Especially on the offensive side I worry that outside of Diggs we have no true game changers at our skill positions or on our OL. An elite QB can make up the difference but we need a few of those depth pieces we signed - notably Harty and Harris, and to a similar extent Kincaid - to maximize their potential in order for that gap between us and some of the other contenders' weapons to be bridged. This is why I am still hoping for Hopkins although that possibility appears to be dwindling with each passing day. Most importantly the coaching needs to be much better in the playoffs. This is something no one can predict until we see it. McDermott can't trot out the same old predictable scheme that smart offensive coaches led by smart QBs like the Chiefs and Bengals have can easily take advantage of. And Dorsey was taken to school by Lou Anarumo, he has to take a big step this year to prove he is capable of calling a chamionship caliber offense. No one would confuse our overall roster for the best in the league, but if we stay relatively healthy the roster combined with Josh Allen is certainly good enough to win a Super Bowl. Another disappointing playoff exit would be more on the coaches than the talent IMO.

Small theory about our 1st and 3rd picks vis a vis USC

Thank you for your scouting reports. -
RD 7, Pick 252: CB Alex Austin, Oregon State
HappyDays replied to Chandler#81's topic in The Stadium Wall
This is a classic McDermott/Beane late round CB pick. Length, zone coverage skills, field awareness. I think there's a path for him to make the team, just has to beat out Cam Lewis.- 108 replies

I'm not pounding the table to get rid of Morse, but we have seen Bates capably play center. We are light on cap space and still could use a couple late-stage free agent signings to round out our DL. Not to mention a certain WR that I would still love to find a way to obtain. Moving on from Morse may be the best available avenue to clear up a decent amount of cap space without a huge drop off to the next man in line.

A lot of guards on the team now. It makes me wonder if Morse could be a surprise cut or trade to free up some cap space? Bates could slide in at center without too much drop off. Just a thought.

Three 6th round picks for Hopkins! Who says no?
-
At this point I would love Andrew Voorhees. It's unlikely that anyone we take at this point will make the team so take the one player you get a freebie on for 2023.

Lol Beane is so over this draft

Analyzing 10 years of first round TE production
HappyDays replied to FireChans's topic in The Stadium Wall
Exactly. I don't know why some people are still acting as if Kincaid and Knox are sharing one role. Beane said it himself, it isn't a secret - there will be times when Kincaid and Knox are on the field at the same time but we are still effectively in 11 personnel. But DCs won't be able to tell the difference until after the snap. -

Every 1st round pick should come with the disclaimer that they aren't going to produce as much as fans want them to. I'm as guilty of this as anyone, so it's fair to say that Kincaid will not be an immediate superstar in year one. Utah isn't exactly a powerhouse so he will have to acclimate to the pros more than some. You don't draft 1st rounders for their year one production though. Still I think he will be a very important role player in the offense this year, which is about as good as you could have hoped for with anybody we drafted at that spot. If I'm right about him we will see flashes of that Travis Kelce ceiling and hopefully have a true superstar in year two or three. -

Thanks. Keep posting clueless nonsense like this. It helps everyone know the kind of poster they're dealing with. Me, I have no interest in debating anything with you. -
RD 5, Pick 150: WR Justin Shorter, Florida
HappyDays replied to Chandler#81's topic in The Stadium Wall
The catching technique doesn't look ideal in that video, but he apparently only has 1 drop on 114 targets over the past two seasons. If it works it works. -

You should know that saying things like this, where it is clear to anyone paying attention that you don't have a clue what you're talking about, is a really bad look. I'm sure you don't care. Just wanted you to know. -

Yes, Beane openly said this would be his role in the offense. In 15 games played in 2020 Beasley had 107 targets, 82 catches, 967 yards. I'm obviously not expecting equivalent production from a rookie on an offense with more slot options than we had in 2020. But I find that comparison more instructive than looking at players that had completely different skill sets and different roles in different offenses. -
This has been somewhat of a trend of this regime, taking players who really showed out in their final game in college. I believe Bernard had a great performance in his final bowl game too. I wonder if they put a special value on the final game of a player's college career, like they think it shows best how that player will look entering the NFL.

There were a lot of former 5 star recruits in this class that never lived up to their potential in college. Bills got one of them. -

Big physical outside WR that has trouble separating. I see similarly profiled players get drafted sooner than this so I'm fine with the value. Edit: Ignore that first clip of Kincaid, I can't find a way to remove it for some reason.- 544 replies

Some insight on Bills first round and how it went down
HappyDays replied to Alphadawg7's topic in The Stadium Wall
Evaluators that only watch film are missing like a third of what NFL GMs look at. JSN's modest size and speed may relegate him to a slot only role in the NFL and he has a huge medical red flag. I would actually be surprised if Beane had a 1st on him. -
I wonder if it was a case of a player with a much higher grade sticking out on the board. Ideally you always want to take perfect scheme fits, but if a lesser scheme fit is a high 2nd round grade and everyone else on the board is borderline 2nd/3rd you should just take the higher grade and find a way to make it work. I appreciate that in rounds 1 and 2 Beane did appear to truly stick to a BPA strategy. I'm not entirely convinced that Dorian Williams was BPA at that spot, I think the run on LBs immediately before our pick may have made Beane panic that we were going to miss the boat entirely on our biggest position of need. Your analysis of him makes me feel a lot better about the player, I just don't understand why Beane took a Milano backup/special teamer in the 3rd round by his own admission. I'm trying to figure out what the plan is. My bold guess is that they have already soured on Bernard and are prepared to move on from him after his rookie season.
