Agreed, I don't think trading into the Top 5 is the right move. I don't really follow college ball closely, so I have no horse in the race. But I haven't seen someone make a case for any of these guys that makes it seem like a slam dunk. But again, I have no idea. I don't think you can trade our 21 & a 2nd and get into the Top 10, though. If one of those guys slips to 15, you could probably trade up without giving up too much -- but even then, I think you'd probably have to part with both 21 & 22 AND a second, and perhaps get a 5th next year in return or something. That's not impossible, although it's unlikely enough that I don't think you should plan your offseason around it. What if they don't slip? You'd have to be sticking with Tyrod or a similarly-priced QB in that case, and hoping that your rookie ends up making his slide look like a huge mistake to teams who passed. Which again -- it's possible. Or it's JP Losman or EJ Manuel. It's a crapshoot. To move into the Top 5, that's probably at least both of this year's 1sts and next year's 1st, too. And if you're saying, this is Andrew Luck, or Carson Wentz, or Jared Goff, or Deshaun Watson -- that's not that bad of a price, really. We paid roughly the same capital for Sammy Watkins. ON THE OTHER HAND, the "sure fire" veteran is Kirk Cousins, who could very well become the highest-paid QB in the NFL. Or maybe not. Honestly, if I'm Kirk Cousins, I'd head to the Jaguars even if it meant staying at a lower salary. Great WRs, a stud RB, a Top 3 Defense. Sure, you have to live in Jacksonville, but at least it's warm. Why even bother entertaining Denver, Buffalo, the Jets, or whoever else comes calling? The Jags are "better than Blake Bortles" away from being a perennial AFC powerhouse. To choose another destination would require backing up the Brinks truck, I think, and Buffalo would be tied with Denver as the next best spot, IF the money is right. Either way, it's an interesting spot. There's not a clear answer, but there are more options than usual. And if you choose to go a way that doesn't work out, you're going to hear "BUT WHY DIDN'T THEY DO THE OTHER THING?!" for yeaaaaaars.

I like this post, and I agree 100%. You knew it was going to go to someone that McD had a prior connection with (as it should), but I'm glad to see it go to someone younger. He has enough experience to give you confidence, but not enough previous OC jobs in the NFL where you feel like you're getting a guy who's just laterally failing around the league. It also seems like his previous OC gigs were in no-win situations, and never had the time to develop with the roster. I'd be more concerned if he'd stayed with the Browns, Dolphins, or Chiefs for 3 years and never got it going. I'm optimistic, and assuming he's not complete garbage at his job, I'd like to see him get more than one season, for simple continuity alone if nothing else.

Nah, I definitely don't think that. Our roster is clearly in midst of rebuilding. I'm of the opinion that each game is very case-by-case. Also, the AFC is weak conference at the moment which allowed for the Bills to squeak in. But I do think that, had the Jags been blown out, it would have reflected worse on our roster. We still have the same holes, but maybe we're closer to being contenders than we'd have ventured in, say, Week 8.

Yes, I know there are a bunch of threads about what to do regarding QB. But this is a poll, so it's different! ? If you want to upgrade from Tyrod Taylor, you're going to need to part with something significant. For Kirk Cousins or another "elite" veteran, they're going to be one of the highest paid QBs in the league. For Josh Allen or Sam Darnold or another "elite" rookie, you're going to need to trade up from 21. Or you can do neither and stay with Tyrod, or a similar level of budget QB -- the Case Keenums or Sam Bradfords of the league, who all have their upside, and their issues. So. What do you do?
-
Which, I mean, makes perfect sense. You'd naturally throw for more yards when playing from behind. One big takeaway from that, also, is how unlikely it is to make the comeback when you're down. I remember earlier in this season, when the conversation was about "Tyrod has never led a 4th quarter comeback" that Sal on WGR brought out stats that show that ANY QB making a comeback is rarer than you'd think, even among the greats.
-
Ah okay, that makes sense. I haven't looked into it yet but this begins to answer my major question when glancing at Daboll's resume -- why was he bounced from so many NFL teams after one season? Seems like he kept finding himself in no-win situations.

Why I Think the Smart Move is Pay to Get Cousins
LA Grant replied to Shaw66's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't dislike this plan. I'm not so sure about devoting that much cap room to Cousins and I'm not so sold on him being the answer. Whereas he reminds you of Kelly, to me, he looks like Drew Bledsoe -- a guy who gets the stats & fantasy points, but doesn't know how to manage situations to get the wins. BUT I agree with your points throughout. I think going all in on drafting a QB is so much riskier, and it's far better to just keep drafting guys and play the odds. Meanwhile, with the amount of holes in our aging roster, using the picks we have (or trading down) makes FAR more sense to quickly re-load the roster. -
Bortles looked like Tyrod, and Tyrod looked like Bortles. Bortles is still worse at throwing, tho. Anyway. Yeah. Tyrod did not have a good game, and he certainly did not have his best game. It sucks.
-
Yeah, that's reasonable, and probably would have been the better call. On the other hand, a slant on the 1-yard-line is how Seattle lost the Super Bowl. And look, all that said, I'm with the majority on this one -- I would've much preferred to see a run up the middle from Tolbert. Or why not put Kyle in again??
-
Good point. I like that plan. Outside of Cousins, who I think becomes QB1 on price tag alone if you sign him, I would keep Tyrod going into camp if the vet FA acquisition is Smith, Bridgewater, Bradford, Keenum, or a trade for Nick Foles or Matt Moore or whoever, who I'd say are all roughly in that same class (along with Tyrod) of "middle of the pack" starters in a good year. I think 2018 will have to be another "Camp QB Battle" because I just don't think you're going to be able to bring in a guy who will be clearly better than Tyrod from the jump. Any of these guys might end up being a better fit than TT, but I wouldn't just throw away TT without seeing him outplayed by another QB on the roster first.

Besides the OPI, the other problem with the KB endzone pass is the ball was in the wrong spot. You can blame that either on Tyrod being inaccurate, or Tyrod & KB not having enough time together to be on the same page. The call was a RPO, defense was anticipating run, and KB was in a one-on-one... you want your QB to take that chance, usually. Haha, I was saying this during the game! Schopp did indeed echo my thoughts, though. I do tend to agree with him.

I hate having such a ****ty offense.
LA Grant replied to Klaista2k's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Last year and the year before, Offense was our strongest unit. Now it's our weakest one. What changed? New OC and new receivers. -
It wasn't necessarily a terrible call -- KB is a jumpball specialist. They were flagged for OPI but if it was a run, they could've been called for Holding and you're in the same situation. I think what frustrates me more is how little KB was targeted outside of that situation.

1. Draft a 1st or 2nd round QB prospect. I haven't watched enough college ball to know who we should want. 2. Acquire a veteran FA who won't break the bank. Personally, I'm not sure I'd want Kirk Cousins unless it was on a 1 or 2 year deal. The only QBs you're going to get this way are guys that other teams don't want, so keep that in mind -- you're choosing from the likes of Nick Foles, Alex Smith, Sam Bradford, Matt Moore, and so on. 3. Keep Tyrod on his option for the next year. 4. Keep Peterman because he's cheap. Go into camp with these guys. Trade one of them before the end of the preseason for market value.

What are your Options to upgrade No1 and No2 need
LA Grant replied to MAJBobby's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Well, a new OC would be lovely. I don't think Dennison did a good job with our offense at all this year -- a fairly big regression from the previous two seasons, due in part to a scheme that didn't match our players. Talent, I think our biggest needs are QB OL DL RB Secondary is set. Receivers are good, need a speedster. LBs are good, need a younger & quicker guy on the outside (maybe move Shaq Lawson to OLB?). -
I highly doubt they stay at 21 and 22. Hard to predict whether they'll move up or down, but I would be very surprised if they stay pat. I think the biggest needs are: DL OL RB QB Secondary is solid. LBs you'd like a quicker starter to go with Milano and Brown -- I think Lorenzo can play another year, but you'd like to have a guy to rotate with him. (Lorenzo was a baller today). Receiver/TE, you'd like a speedster downfield guy, but otherwise you're probably set there with KB, Zay, Clay, and Thompson. OL and DL both need talent and depth. OL is aging -- just like we're probably done with Kyle, we should aim to improve from Eric Wood. DL, you have Hughes and guys that should probably be back-ups. RB, I think you want to aim for a guy like in this year's draft with Fournette, Hunt, etc, who can be "the guy." Split backfield with McCoy for a year or so. My ideal QB situation is a 4 way competition and you trade the 4th guy at the end of camp. Tyrod and Peterman, a Rookie QB, and a veteran pick-up like Alex Smith. Probably you're trading Peterman at the end of that for whatever you can get, but you could also trade one of the veterans if that's how it shakes out. Tyrod was bad against Jacksonville today but I still say you keep him until you have a clearly better option. It would have been nice to have a legitimate QB2 option when TT is struggling. That's just my opinion.

Since the 2017-2018 season was a playoff year, The Flutie Curse lasted 16 years... a year for each regular season game. If they hadn't pulled Flutie in the last game, or had allowed him to start against the Titans, he would've had his fair 16 games. See, what happened was -- when it was announced Johnson would start the wildcard game, Flutie went to the basement of Ralph Wilson Stadium and performed a blood magick ritual with Flutie Flakes™️, OJ Simpson's jersey, and the Bills '99 yearbook/season schedule. Pentagram on the floor, a boiling cauldron, a hooded robe -- the works. "A sixteenth start, I was denied / For sixteen years, a drought they'll abide." Satan appeared in the form of Bill Belichick, agreed to become coach of the Patriots the next year, and that's how The Flutie Curse came to be. At least that's what I heard... from a very good inside source.

11/7/2016.... What we need, IMO TT's finest game.
LA Grant replied to billsbackto81's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
We've never seen Tyrod have a full season with the same targets for most of the schedule. We have seen him improve with those targets as time goes on, with Sammy/Woods, and with the new guys. Would love to see that continue to develop. The first part, I could certainly see that happening. The second part, as much as I'd love it, has Tyrod ever had a good game against the Pats?
