  1. Yeah, I was kidding.

How about: Ralph is cheap? The guy who gave away about a BILLION dollars after his death and the sale of the team. Maybe: Ralph is frugal - except when he's not?

Yeah, I was playing along. Goodell was more than happy to protect the shield and largely spare NE when it saved face for the league. Destroyed tapes anyone? The forfeiture of one late first round draft pick for multiple SB wins was a joke. He has looked the other way a lot when it has come to PEDs and cheating. He doesn't like pushback or defiance though. That'd be evident with Deflategate and Bountygate. He quietly told the Saints to shut down their bounties when they first came to light and only nailed them after they defied him. He cut Josh Gordon some slack until he lied to him, then it was over. No more mercy.

  2. Thurman, I respect you as one of the more intelligent posters on this board but I have to disagree to an extent.

Let's say the Bills score 100 offensive TDs this year. But only 37 of the 100 TDs came through the air. Would you still be disappointed in the passing game?

The percent of TDs that come through the air is meaningless.

Think about this: teams today generally pass more than they run. So today's defenses (schemes, rosters, lineups) are more designed to stop the pass than the run. In fact, defenses are in nickel and dime packages about 60% of the time.

The ancient Chinese strategist, Sun Tzu, said it's best to 'attack where there is no defense.' So if defenses are trying to stop the pass, maybe the smart thing to do right now is run. It's certainly the smart thing to do when your RB is better than your QB.

In the end, why do we care how we get our points as long as we score more than our opponent?

Last year, we were in the top 10 in scoring but our D was weak. We need to get better at D. But you're right - we're unlikely to be as effective on the ground this year as we were last year. So - to stay in the top 10 in scoring - we're going to have to develop a better passing game. And I think we will - screw the pundits.

A whole lot is getting made of the Bills being top 10 in scoring offense so I'd like to explore that a little more. They were tied with Pittsburgh (generally considered an excellent offensive team) for 10th at 24.9 ppg. That's top 11 and very respectable. One more FG a game and we'd have been top 3, just ahead of NE. One FG less a game and we'd have been 20th overall, a little below average. So that's the range we are in. A little improvement would vault us into the top of the league, but a little drop off would send us back to average.

We were also tied for 16th in defensive scoring at 23.6 ppg, exactly average. Improve by a FG a game and we'd move up to 12th. Give up an extra FG a game and we'd be at 29th! Yikes!

Looking back on the O and D run and pass rankings (see my previous post) it tells us a lot about the Bills. We were an elite rushing team with excellent pass defense, but terrible run defense and poor passing game.

The first thing that sticks out to me is that, wow, we can't fall off at all on defense. That'd be catastrophic. An improvement is obviously needed and I do expect it based solely on us running a competent scheme this season. But it'll take a big improvement (3.6 ppg) to get into the top 5. We were there before Wrex, so maybe we can get back - or at least close. As many have noted, the scoring defense needs to improve. Statistically that looks like it's all run defense, but one could argue that other teams ran on us a lot because they were ahead late in the game. Regardless, our run defense sucked.

The second thing, as I noted before, is that the pass game has to improve. Our run game is so far ahead of everyone else that we really can't improve it. 8 of the other top 11 ranked offenses made the post season. There are times that we will need to pass to win and we haven't been able to do that. That has to change too.

  3. My point exactly,

Yes...screens in college work amazing because you have 6'4" Sammy against a 6' kid from Georgia Tech who is studying to be a podiatrist.

One huge reason bubble screens work so much better in college than in the NFL is that he NCAA allows blocking downfield prior to the pass if the ball is caught behind the LOS. The NFL obviously doesn't allow that as it'd be a pick.

  4. Scanning available stats, I found many areas where the Bills did well... Rushing stats were phenomenal... Believe it or not, Many of our stats ranged from good to middle of the pack

    Except one.

Perhaps the one that kept us out of the playoff's for the seventeenth time in a row.

    https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/pass-attempts-per-game

Yes, the D was miserable... But in order to be competitive this one stat MUST change... Note to our QB's -SPRAY IT, DON'T SAY IT!

That is not correct at all. Here are the facts:

    Offensive rankings:

    - 10th overall in ppg

    - 16th overall in ypg

    - 1st in rushing ypg

    - 30th in passing ypg

    Defensive rankings:

    - 16th overall in ppg

    - 19th overall in ypg

    - 29th in rushing against ypg

    - 6th in passing against ypg

The team couldn't pass or stop the run. BOTH were huge issues. The worst was that late in games we couldn't pass to score or stop the run and get the ball back. And don't give me the "we're a run first offense" crap. If we could've been effective passing the ball, then we'd have done it a lot more.

  5. I am thinking by the end of the year it wont even be discussed because our 1st round pick will be making plays and Darby will have filled Gilmore's spot adaquately

I think White will do very well in McD's scheme. What will get brought up is who we could've had instead: "We could've had Gilmore AND Player X and we would've been even better." That will happen over and over, but it'll be unfair to the current regime. They're dealing with the mess Whaley and Rex left them and they're doing pretty darn well so far, overall at least.

  6. Most people would say the best cornerbacks in the NFL are those who are excellent at 1-on-1 man coverage.

Not to say that "zone guys" are not talented, but their task is probably a little easier.

For example... As good as Richard Sherman is (Seattle plays mostly zone/Cover 3), his ability has never approached what Darrell Revis offered the Jets in his prime. The ability to shut down an opposing receiver by himself, with no help. I'm not sure Sherman would be considered elite, if he didn't have Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor behind him - not to mention an all-world defense around him.

The Bills are going to play mostly zone coverage now.

That doesn't mean we can get by with scrubs at cornerback. But it does mean that our CBs won't need to be shut-down to succeed (like Ryan's defense seemed to require).

That's a great breakdown. The elite one-on-one guy's have the most value, but the new NFL rules have made them pretty much extinct. Gilmore is an excellent press-zone CB. I'm sure he'd have been great in McD's Cover 3. He isn't here because the Bills couldn't afford him. NE paid him well, but slightly under what he was worth. We will move forward and find new guys suited to our scheme. It sure looks like we already got one in round one of the draft.

  7. He has "potential". The issue is those aren't things you can typically "fix".

It doesn't happen often and that's why someone with his physical ability was a day 3 pick. He did show that he was capable of excellent accuracy. The man made some spectacular throws. He couldn't do it with nearly the consistency needed, but he did show he could do it. He was a lottery ticket and it's smart to buy those in situations like we were (are) in.

  8. John, what evidence do you have that Cardale is inaccurate? That proposition is not supported by his college stats.

    https://www.profootballfocus.com/draft-pff-scouting-report-cardale-jones-qb-ohio-state/

Read that scouting report. I'm an OSU alum and I saw nearly every snap Cardale took there. It's as accurate appraisal of him in college as I've seen. His accuracy was highly inconsistent, but he certainly showed flashes of exceptional ability in that regard. Consistency is a must in the NFL and he was a long, long way from where he needs to be. Still, he was an excellent late round QB pick IMO. Physical skills galore and flashes of great ability, but he fell due to those severe accuracy issues. Fix those and you're looking at an elite level QB in the NFL. But if he doesn't dramatically improve then he can't even be a viable backup. His accuracy issues are that bad. So I'd expect our new coaching staff to evaluate him and try to correct his problems. I doubt they'll need more than this season to determine if they are correctable.

  9. Oh my- that it quite funny...

That new video sure doesn't align with the story about breaking up some altercation.

I expect ESPN to contact him very shortly to return his new hire t shirt.

Yeah. Love how Rex blames the other guy for throwing his drink on him when it's the other way around. He and Rob are classless, clueless buffoons.

  10. interesting. His behavior was so bizarre/appalling on a recent OSU charity cruise with thousands of alumni, coaches, players, fans that the couple who organizers it every year have told him he can't come back next year. There were too many complaints. He apparently got in a couple fights with former teammates over stupid things, refused to interact, was wasted the whole time, people said they thought he was on something. This is a cruise for cancer survivors that he goes on for free as an appearance. he refused to sign autographs, wouldn't take pics with kids. Prior to that he claims that he was "jumped" outside a Columbus bar and attacked for no reason. He put a video out about it and then deleted it. He has since deleted all of his tweets, from all time. I'm not saying it didn't happen (the attack) but it seems very odd to me unless he provoked them. He's well known and liked here (or was), even grew up and went to HS here. No details have ever come out either. No one saw it? His mom was an anchorwoman in the local news until last year when she abruptly quit to move to NJ with him when he got drafted ... another thing I thought was a bit odd. Just one of those situations where it feels like it's a constant drip.., drip... drip... and you hope the next thing isn't worse than the last.

Damn. That's not good. Thanks for the insight.

  11. I wish a study could be done about NFL players in their first 3 seasons (I picked 3 out of the sky; another number could make more sense, I don't know), that categorized their off-time activities.

One extreme would be "Worked out, practiced and studied the playbook 100% of the time," the other extreme would be, "Partied like a rock star 100% of the time." Then a few in between.

I'd like to know how much these young guys devote to football and in how many of them it makes a difference on the field.

Some are just naturally gifted and can get away with less diligence - but I think those are exceptions - especially in today's game (I just know this is going to go right to the 80s and 90s, when everyone was doing coke and getting hammered 7 days/week).

I wonder if it would show the % of young players who give into the temptations of the bigger cities and whether - even in Buffalo - young guys still manage to party non-stop.

I do think that some free agents chose cities with the nightlife they want. Miami has had a lot of big free agent signings that wound up to be underperforming players for them. It can happen anywhere, but I think some places are a magnet for players who care a lot more about the lifestyle of a famous NFL player rather than working hard and winning.

  12. 1. Sammy is a Bill for 2017.

    2. Bills did not exercise 5th year option because his long term health prognosis is an unknown.

    3. If he is successful and healthy in 2017, tag is available for 2018.

    4. Based on the health uncertainty picture, what GM who values his job trades high pick(s) to inherent the same uncertainty?

    5. If 2017 is highly healthy and successful, as a UFA he can test the market at which time prudent GM(s) can react. Bills still have tag as a fall back.

....don't think I missed anything ...if so, post it......

It's possible, but unlikely. This is the 4th season for 5th options. In the previous 3 seasons only one player (Melvin Ingram) who had his option declined remained with his team in year 5. What I'm seeing is this:

    - The 5th year option was guaranteed for injury only until the first day of the 2018 league year (in March).

    - The Bills didn't pick it up either because they were worried about his injury history or didn't think he was worth paying a large contract to (the option year dollar amount would be a starting point in negotiations).

    - Taylor will be under center in a run oriented offense this season.

To get that tag Watkins will have to stay healthy, get enough targets to be highly productive and perform. I think he'd do the last one of those if the first two happened, but I don't know that he stays healthy or gets enough targets. And then there's the long term contract issue. If this regime didn't think his option was worth picking up, I have a tough time believing that they'll shell out a huge contract with a bunch of guaranteed money. They're gun shy of him, probably because of his injuries, and I don't think they're planning on keeping him beyond 2017. It'd be nice if it all worked out and they did, but that doesn't appear to be happening.

  13. The Bills had $11.558M in cap space prior to today. Having cut S A. Williams the Bills will now have Williams' cap savings of $4.2M added to their total, which amounts to $15.758.

That total includes the top 51 players of the 87 total currently on the roster.

More cap space is always a good thing.

Where'd you get your numbers? Spotrac has the Bills at $12.3M in space for the top 51 as of now.

    http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/buffalo-bills/cap/

For everyone ONLY THE TOP 51 HIGHEST PAID PLAYERS COUNT TOWARDS THE CAP.

True until cut down day. Then all 53 and practice squad players also count.
