  1. Barley good questions. To the best of my knowledge, though, it's often a bit less clear cut - in a grade 2 sprain, there may be instability due in part to swelling and to stretching of the ligaments, and there's a judgement call involved in whether or not a partial tear should be surgically repaired or whether it will provide enough stability to the joint as it heals.

I expect no one is in a hurry to make a decision, and that's probably the right call - let the swelling subside completely and then re-assess.

    Thanks. That makes sense.

  2. Why would we trade for a player one violation away from a 2 year ban?

Yeah, I agree. It'd be a tough trade to make, too. Teams wouldn't want to give up anything for him so the Iggles would be better off holding onto him rather than taking a late round pick. Even if you could acquire him, could you really depend on him? You could spend a lot of time and effort teaching him your system and getting him to gel with your OL only to have him get suspended for 2 more seasons. Then all you did was swap a late round pick for a problem.

  3. What are they? Do you know?

Yes. Removal of offsets and payment of the full signing bonus in the first season of the contract are the issues. In the five seasons since slotting, every 3rd round pick got one or the other. From what I understand Bosa not looking for both, he is only looking for one or the other. Incidentally Goff and Wentz got both. Their contracts do not have offsets and pay the full signing bonus this season.

  4. In Eli's case it was the player, more precisely the player's father. SD had been bad for a while and was viewed as a bad organization. Archie did not want Eli to endure what he had at NO. So they did the same thing Elway did to Baltimore. I can't remember or don't care what the issue is with Bosa. I think the agent and Bosa want something on the contract that no one does, but can't recall what.

Eli's father knew the trainwreck that the Chargers have been and didn't want him to have to deal with that. I thought it was a crummy move at the time, but after watching the Chargers since I don't blame them. I wouldn't want my kid playing there if I could help it.

As for Bosa, it's the opposite of what you state. He's only asking for the same thing as other players slotted where he is (and lower) got. The Chargers are trying to remove contractual items that are considered standard for a 3rd overall pick.

  5. The sheer number of dumb comments in this thread is impressive.

Especially given there is NO mystery here...first diagnosis is Partially torn ACL. They are having a second opinion confirm the diagnosis, but that can not be done until they get the swelling down. So where is the mystery other than the mystery of why people on here seem to think their demand and need to know supersedes medical science and procedure?

The real and bigger question is this: is there something contributing to the over whelming amount of injuries this team faces to key players year after year?

Last year we literally had one of the worst, if not worst, overall injury situation in the NFL. We lost all key playmakers on offense for parts of the season, their backups, and some for the season. Even when playing our players were often playing hurt like Taylor, Sammy, McCoy, Clay, and key members of the OL...not to mention the key people we lost on defense. We are already off to a dismal start in the injury department and we havent even played our first preseason game. Its so bad, I almost rater see guys like Sammy, McCoy, Taylor, Clay, AW, KW, Dareus, Gilmore, and Darby never play a single snap in preseason.

So why is this? I don't recall seeing any changes to our strength and conditioning staff, so maybe we start there. What about the condition of the fields we practice on and in the stadium? Either we are just that unlucky or there is something else that seems to repeat this pattern year after year. And I don't want to hear the naive response that all teams have injuries...no kidding...but we continuously get hit among the hardest every year IMO and at some point "bad lucky" or "cursed" can't remain the most common answer and this team needs to look to solve this problem.

There's really not much of substance going on to discuss, aside from contract stuff with Taylor and Gilmore. What we know for sure is that Ragland has a grade 2 ACL sprain, which is a partially torn ACL. That's pretty much it here. There's been a lot of misinformation and speculation too. I couldn't find anything reliable on whether or not his knee was "loose". That's a big deal because instability in the knee with a grade 2 injury points toward surgery. A stable knee would be unlikely to need it. There's nothing more that has been made public regarding the first opinion so we don't even know if it was conclusive in any way, mother than to confirm the partial tear. We will just have to wait and see. Or we can sit and speculate. It doesn't much matter. We should know the course soon.

One question for those who might know. If his knee has some slight instability, could the course of action be to rehab it and see if it responds before having surgery (if needed)? Having surgery now or in 6 weeks really would affect his availability this season and it'd give him a chance to possibly play.

  6. The Browns could be one hell of a good watch this year. RG3 at QB, Josh Gordon back, Corey Coleman being the Human Touchdown at Baylor. Duke Johnson, Gary Barnidge.

Or, you know, it could end terribly. Like every other Browns season I can remember.

They could be very fun to watch if RG3 does well and stays healthy. If so, the offense has potential to put up a lot of points - and they'll probably need to as the defense looks like it could be very, very bad. There's a real possibility of some very high scoring shootouts.

  7. @BobHoltzmanESPN

Robert Griffin III will be named Browns starting quarterback. Announcement possible as soon as today, per team... http://es.pn/2aFbbHL

Completely expected. They need to see if they can fix RG3 and reclaim his career. They might as well try. Their other options are McCown, who's an old vet, and a late 3rd round rookie in Kessler. It's a very similar situation to what the Bills faced last year when I said they might as well give Taylor a shot.

  8. I see a competitive team, but we're a middleweight. If we're punching our weight we should be competitive, if we're punching down we should win, but we'll be in trouble when we punch up. That puts us .500-ish. Plus or minus how things break. The good news is that we're better than the Jest, at least as good as the Phish and will get the Cheatriots without Brady at least once. 4-5 division wins aren't unrealistic. That would be a huge help.

  9. Would the report of no crutches or brace from fairburn lend to it being stable?

    @adamschefter

Bills scheduled to get second opinion of Reggie Raglands MRI on Monday that will determine how much time rookie 2nd-round pick will miss.

I don't think he'd be getting a second opinion if it was stable. I thought I read that there was instability, but I'm not sure the source was reliable. Looking for it.
  10. How long is short term IR again?

There is no short term IR in NFL. He's not eligible for the PUP list since he's taken part in a practice already. He'd have to be carried on the roster or put on IR. All NFL teams may bring one (and only one) player back from IR. They used to have to designate that player at the time they placed him on IR, but now they can do it at the time they bring the player back.

  11. I don't have a favorite for #3 but like I said I am looking forward to seeing how these guys look.

It will mostly be with EJ and Cardale but I expect the passing game to be very vertical in preseason.

Looking at the WRs after Watkins and Woods, the Bills 3rd WR might not even be on the roster right now. If no one steps up and takes the job, then Whaley will have to find a cut/waived WR or trade for one.

  12. They signed two veterans, they didn't sign camp bodies. It's good that we now have adequate replacements for RR but it's very telling about the severity of that knee.

That second ILB signing really seals. One could have been something else. Two is because Ragland is out for an extended time. Maybe the delay in telling the world how severe his injury is was so that they could get guys signed.

Are you insinuating that if they thought Raglands injury was not serious they would have signed lesser players intentionally for camp bodies? It's not like Spikes or Hawthorne cost more than veteran minimum.

If Ragland was expected back soon they wouldn't have signed two stopgap vets who could start if needed. Maybe one. Maybe. But not two. They won't be expensive, but I'm not sure if either was given more than vet minimum or not.

  13. Whatever the case with Ragland, I like that the Bills are moving forward aggressively with a contingency plan while there are still weeks before the season.

    Smh?

Its at the point where we praise them for doing what they should be doing?

If we aren't to praise someone for doing what they should be doing, then when DO we praise them?

Seriously, kudos to the FO for getting on this quickly.

  14. Not when Reddick was hurt and out for a few weeks, too, and the team decided to keep Striker at OLB instead of ILB.

I don't know that Reddick spraining his MCL and expectations that he will be out 6 weeks would have prompted signing Spikes. Maybe they didn't like what they saw out of him before he got injured and are looking to replace him. Or maybe it was the combination of the two injuries and neither is that bad, but it's concerning that we already know the extent of Reddick's injury and not Ragland's. Again, no need to jump the gun here and assume the worst, but there's certainly reason for concern.

Edit: Just saw that Hawthorne also signed. Now I'm very concerned about Ragland. The odds that he will be out for an extended time are looking much higher.

  15. It does however speak well of a very proactive NFL team in the event it ends up being true.

Personally..Id rather have Ragland because I think his coverage ability is being way downplayed......but Zach Brown and Brandon Spikes should work nicely together

If the Spikes signing is due to Ragland's injury, then the Bills sure moved fast. That's good. The definitive medical info hasn't come out yet though, so there's no need to get ahead of ourselves. But the timing of the signing is concerning.

    @profootballdoc

In my experience, I never left the field without knowing whether the ACL was torn. MRI confirmatory only.

And this is why the timing of the Spikes signing is concerning.
