  1. Playing the "Real Fan" card and dividing everyone on this board into two BA groups are two of the douchiest moves one can make on this board.

So, based on my personal point of view, it seems there are two different types of Bills fans on this forum.

    • Fan's that want to win
    • Fan's that want a QB
Here is a list of some things I have read from fans that just want to win:
    • Hopefully the new Owner / Coach / GM / Player does great and we win!
    • I hate the Patriots!
    • I hate the Jets!
    • I hate the Dolphins!
Here is a list of some things I have read from fans that want a QB:
    • Mortgage an entire draft
    • Trade the best players on the roster
    • Fire every Coach / GM that doesn't draft a QB every year
    • Tank every season until we find a QB
    • Cry about Bill Belichick lucking out on a reject QB
    • Wish that they were Patriot fans

Basically what I am trying to say is that I am not with the QB hunters, but I love all of your posts and meaningless rants about finding the next "Tom Brady". Us fans that just want to win are kind of boring, and hope everything works out. We occasionally blow up and rant about the entire Bills organizational failures, and then return to our winless hole.

So, to you QB hunters, I thank you for interjecting a QB type response in every single post to make it a little more interesting!

P.S. - I really like the Nathan Peterman draft pick, but can care less if he ever starts a game as long as we win.

  2. Tyrod cannot win close games? What do you call Tennessee in 2015?

To be fair, he said "games" plural.

In all seriousness, is anyone here satisfied with Taylor under center if we're down 5 at our own 25 with 3 timeouts and 2 minutes to go? Is anyone here confident? Anyone taking a straight up bet for their mortgage payment at that point?

  3. Where would you all rank Mahomes if he was entering the draft next year? Would he still be a top 10 pick, or 2nd QB taken? Would Andy Reid take Mahomes over the top 2 or 3 QBs next year. I know no one can really answer those questions, but I would like to here your opinions.

No way would he be top 2 in next year's class. There are at least 3 QBs that are likely to come out in 2018 that would go before Mahomes. Although he certainly would have had a chance to improve his draft stock by playing another year of college ball. Everything is subject to change though. A year ago Kizer was projected to go 1st overall. Mahomes is highly talented, but very raw even by current standards. He has to make a giant leap to the NFL. He's a classic high risk-high reward QB. He probably won't hit big, but if he does - JACKPOT!

I'd rank the top 3 as: Darnold, Rosen and Allen. Mahomes and Rudolph would be vying for 4 and 5.

  4. Playing with Tyrod I really don't expect that much production from Sammy or any of the receivers. However if Sammy stays healthy they should extend him because they know what he's capable of and his possible lack of production most likely won't be his fault. I'm just looking for him to remain healthy for the season. That would be good enough for me until a new qb arrives in Buffalo.

Just out of curiosity, why exactly is Sammy agreeing to an extension? Why wouldn't he choose a deal from a team where he would be used more and, thus, more valuable? Why would the Bills offer as much as a team that would get more out of him?

  5. Really, that's all?

Now I understand why they did it.

Bills knew they would have to make a decision on Sammy, one way or the other, sooner or later. They decided they could risk the $2 million to be free to cut ties early if they want to.

It'll probably be closer to a $3M difference. His option would've been for $13.3M. The 2017 franchise tag numbers haven't been calculated yet, but it was $15.7M got 2016.

I think we'll be happy to franchise him and work on an extension if he has the top5 year he is capable of

Lots needs to happen for that. He's got to stay healthy and he's got to get fed the ball. Neither is a given by any stretch. The the Bills need to be comfortable tagging him or giving him a big extension. That will depend on his productio and their comfort level with his long term health. And let's not forget that any long term deal needs Sammy's blessing. The Bills probably can't tag him more than once (that's where the option would've been handy).

Reality is that 2017 is almost certainly it for Sammy in Buffalo. But maybe they can tag and trade him if he stays healthy.

  6. I'll play on that arm strength thing until I see a play that changes my opinion. If you don't think opposing defenses won't jump patterns on a weak armed QB you haven't been watching football. And yes I do get that regardless of your patronizing tone

I have an issue with weaker armed QBs. Since 2008 QBs who have been clocked at under 55mph have not been successful with only a few exceptions. Those exceptions are: Jake Locker (54mph, 2011), Tyrod Taylor (50mph, 2011) and Dak Prescott (54mph, 2016). Peterman clocked in at 54mph this year. I know he's not strong armed, but I'm okay with 54mph. Here's a spreadsheet to check out:

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1_-SienfT3umX0HKxRyQqyXM9BqHrotdcQA6W-V_pDiY/htmlview?pli=1#

  7. as much as I liked this QB class and felt this was our best chance in years to get a good QB, it wouldn't have made sense to have a GM on his way out choose a franchise QB for a coach he couldn't work with. Organizational symmetry matters.

I just hope we don't get mired in a spot where we win between 7 and 10 games and are on the outside looking in at the best QB prospects. Hopefully that Chiefs pick will buy us some upward movement

I really did not like this year's QB class much at all. Not sure what you saw in it. Lots of QBs got pushed up in this one because there was no top end talent. Two QBs that should've been late first round picks go 2 and 10 and a second round QB goes 12. Yeeesh. Kudos to SF, Buffalo and Cleveland for hosing some desperate teams.

Whaley didn't chose anything in this draft, it was all McD. He chose his players. On that note, I'm very happy with the Peterman pick especially considering where we got him. He was the only QB who's game film didn't make me cringe. Every other one of the top QBs had issues bad enough for me to want to pass. His didn't "wow" me, but I didn't cringe either.

  8. If Watkins has a good year he is not gone, just costs us about 3mil/yr more which is a good gamble. It is called a Franchise tag. Your whole statement is based on health which Watkins in the past 2 years has failed to show much. If they had made the 5th year option and Watkins never comes back from foot injury then they would have gambled wrong and cost the team 13mil dollas. In my mind it is better to be wrong and cost only 3 mil more than wrong and lose 13 million. Really is just simple math!

It is called protecting one's position, if Watkins becomes that good he will be worth, 13mil, around 15mil following year and last year of tagging 20-25mil (QB) money. Bills own him if they want to pay for a "healthy WR". They have to settle the QB position 1st. Watkins position with health concerns is he will want to sign a long term agreement if he gets lucky to be healthy next year and puts up great numbers. Going year to year is not something Watkins can afford to do!

So all that has to happen for Watkins to stick around past 2017 is that:

    - The offense has to deviate from run first and pass much more than the last couple seasons

    - Tyrod has to be up to that challenge and be effective despite the increased passing workload

    - Watkins has to stay healthy despite a much increased workload and

    - Watkins has to have a career year, far exceeding his previous three seasons

I'm not banking on single one of those things happening, much less all four.

  9. It was a facade. They hired the guy they had already decided they wanted - and probably already had a handshake deal with. I've got no problem with any of that either. They obviously already know they work well together and Beane is already dialed into what McD likes/needs in players. If any inside ball got played in this last draft, then at least it was in favor of the Bills. Nice to be on the good side of something like that for a change. Let's roll.

  10. So McDermott, who reportedly clashed with Whaley over dumping Taylor because he wanted to win now, will trade him away and start a rookie? But I will say if someone dangled a 1st round pick for Tyrod, I'd be tempted.

I'd do that in a heartbeat. It won't happen, but it'd be a great opportunity for a turnaround in B-lo. We could do what Cleveland did with RG3. Bring him in to pretend we are trying to compete, but tank hard. Then take a top QB prospect with our pick and still have two more 1st round picks to build up the roster. 2017 would suck, but we'd be on our way up as Brady and Belichick head to retirement. There'd be a lot of fun years in the horizon if they executed.

  11. IIRC they were in Philly together

Correct. Banner was there McD's entire Philly career, so I'd think he'd know better. Of course, Banner's best years as Eagles President were when Reid was running the football side of things and Banner was only running the business side. But Banner started to get more involved in football ops when Reid was ousted. I highly doubt that Banner would be happy staying strictly on the business side, which he did not show any talent for. If McD wants a good business guy who's lousy at football ops, but will almost certainly try to meddle in them, then he's better off keeping Russ.

  12. So if the rumours are true Brandon Beane is a potential replacement for Whaley? Here is just one link I found:

    http://www.newyorkupstate.com/buffalo-bills/index.ssf/2017/04/buffalo_bills_fire_gm_doug_whaley_brandon_beane_potential_replacement.html

If this is true The Bills are in the Hands of a First Time HC at the age of 43. And a First Time GM at the age of 39.

Hope the Pegulas know what they are doing. Their track record on hiring HCs and GMs is not great. Anyone seriously concerned here?

You know, the ONLY thing that has concerned me about McD is his lack of any experience as a HC (at any level). But I really like what I've seen so far. His inexperience hasn't manifested itself as problems. Not yet anyway. He has yet to coach a game or deal with real adversity, but so far, so good. And if he's a high quality HC, then I'm very willing to deal with a few bumps in the road while he hones his skills.

I figured make a thread to talk the replacements for Whaley.

Here is the first. Beane and the rumored Mole in Carolinas War Room. http://www.newyorkupstate.com/buffalo-bills/index.ssf/2017/04/who_is_brandon_beane_5_things_to_know_about_buffalo_bills_gm_candidate_bio.html

    Another name to watch is

    Joe Banner (@JoeBanner13)

    4/30/17, 6:56 AM

name to watch in Buffalo is Brett Veach. Worked with Sean in Philly & is highly respected by Andy Reid & all the Philly people. In KC nowhttp://m.chiefs.com/news/article-2/From-Philly-to-Kansas-City-One-Chiefs-Scout-Shares-His-Journey/6e4c690a-1e7d-4765-a397-e4a210b1f5c6

Banner would be the worst possible option. He was an absolute disaster in Cleveland when he (briefly) ran the show. He'd be great for Pegula's bottom line, but it'd be at the expense of improving the football team. He desperately wants back into the NFL, but I can't see him as McD's kind of guy.

  13. So what you're saying is he no longer is involved with football. Which is what I said. which I what the owners have said. And which is what Russ has said.

There are not a lot of people with the expertise to run a large sports enterprise and oversee four different teams. And I'll say again, if the Pegulas see him failing in his actual job (and not what people around here want to continue to insist is his job), then they'll make a change. Recall that Terry's hand picked guy he brought in with him when they bought the Sabres was Ted Black. And when Terry decided he had to go, he let him go. And for whom? Russ Brandon.

No, that's exactly what I'm NOT saying. I'm saying that Brandon's job description indicates that he only should be doing things other than football operations, but that he has continued to influence football decisions. Whether or not he would be successful in doing the latter in the future is a moot point. Whether or not he's doing well at his non-football operations job is moot. The reason he needs to be fired is because despite being removed from football operations he has continued to attempt to influence them. I hope that was clearer.

  14. If all R Brandon ever did was strictly marketing I could go along with what your saying here teef, but Brandon sticks his nose in football operations to promote marketing and thats not the way its supposed to work in my humble opinion.

Guy has probably been the cause of more knee jerk reactions from the Bills organization then we will ever know,

talk about cancer to the team...

And that's the crux of the matter. It's why he needs to go.

He should not stick his nose into football and the optics now indicate he's not. See above for corrections on him being strictly a marketing guy.

Except that's not true. He has continued to attempt to influence things on the football side and has succeeded to some degree until very recently. Only with the sacking of Whaley did he lose his last avenue to exert his influence. There's no way that's acceptable to me - and his current impotence in influencing football operations is not a defense.

There are a lot of people that can do his job and stay out of things they shouldn't be involved in. Hire one of them.

  15. The Bills should never have gotten rid of Kurt Schultz in 1999, especially after I bought his jersey.

    I hate LaBatts Blue,

    Life sucks!

Have to agree on Labatt Blue. It does suck.

I like what McD has done here. He's a first time HC at any level so I know there'll be some missteps, but I haven't seen much to complain about. I'd have probably picked up Sammy's option, but I get why he didn't - and it was probably the right decision.

My only negative(ish) thought is that this is only the beginning and getting the Bills to a point where they are competing for a championship is a ways off. It'll take time. And a QB.

  16. Can we tag sammy with the original round tender? That would allow us to match or pick up a 1st!

No, it doesn't work that way. You are thinking of restricted free agent tenders. Watkins will be an unrestricted free agent after this season unless the Bills sign him to an extension or tag him with the franchise or transition tag.

Now that the Bills decision to decline his option has had some time to sink in I hope people understand that this isn't some motivating tactic, it's the first step in parting ways after the season. It's a shame, but it is what it is.

  17. Yes. His floor is basically Tyrod Taylor, and at half the price.

Watson' floor could be much lower than Tyrod's - and I'm not a big Taylor fan. He's a serviceable bridge QB. We don't know what Watson is yet, but I don't like his weak arm or lack of accuracy. The OP's guidelines were not to consider draft capital spent or cap consequences in the comparison, but if you do - and you did - then no way do I take Watson. I wouldn't have touched him anywhere close to 10. Sure, his contract would be lower, but it'll also be guaranteed for 4 seasons and we wouldn't have two first round and one third round pick to spend on other players. NFW do I take Watson in the realistic scenario.
