Bills press conference @2:30-Nix confirmed as new GM
Brandon replied to zdro22's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Well, I guess that begs the question: What is that reason? My suspicion is that his biggest liability is age, and to be honest, I really couldn't care less about that. I'd rather have a good talent evaluator for the next five years than a bad one for the next ten. -

Its terrible, isn't it? I wonder how many of these people would be whining if they'd have hired him as the GM last year, when he was still the assistant GM in San Diego? -

I'e always suspected that was the case with Modrak and that he was probably getting blame he didn't deserve. If he's the new GM, though, some of the yahoos are going to be up in arms, so Ralph and Russ had better do a thorough job of explaining that...and taking the blame themselves...if its true. -

That sounds as plausible as anything and although some would whine about his age, I really don't care as long as he knows what he's doing. -

Half asleep? Sounds like a nightmare to me. -
To be fair, he did say that the OL was important. That's quite a bit more credit than the Bills have given them at times this decade. As with everything else, there has to be a balance. The OL is important, but not all-important, just as the QB is important, but not all-important. The one thing I'm pretty certain of is that if the Bills are ever going to win, both areas of the team are going to have to get significantly better, along with a few others.

I largely agree, however, note that the San Diego Chargers are dead last in the NFL in rushing yards per attempt and 29th in total rushing yards. The Colts? 30th in yards per attempt and dead last in overall rushing yardage. By contrast, our lowly Bills are 19th in the NFL in rushing, but, despite their OL troubles, are 13th in yards per carry. A good QB can certainly make up for a lot of other problems on offense.

Considering how much 'success' they've had trading for QBs in the past, I really hope they don't plan on doing that yet again. On the bright side, I don't consider ESPN to be particularly credible when it comes to the Bills, so its probably nothing but baseless speculation.

Michael Bush didn't break his femur, though. Like Wood, he actually broke his tibia and fibula. Of course, that doesn't mean that all breaks are the same, and in Bush's case, he had some complications that hopefully Wood will not have.

Norv Turner is proof that we need a GM first
Brandon replied to bigbillsfan12's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That's certainly part of it, but again, that goes back to the front office that brought them in and the coaching staff that maximized their talent. The truth is, the Chargers are an example of an organization that has done pretty much everything the right way: a good front office, good coaches, a franchise QB, a HOF RB, and the list goes on. -

I know. I'm merely pointing out that Norv Turner took over an excellent team from one of the better coaches in league history. Its difficult to determine who is ultimately responsible for the Chargers' success this decade, but certainly, Schottenheimer and a solid front office team both have a major hand in it. -
Well, it might help keep the Bills' defense off the field. As it stands, there have been more plays against their defense than any other in the league this year. Their defense has its share of issues, especially against the run, but the fact that the offense can't stay on the field and they have run the fewest number of offensive plays in the league is a major contributing factor to their problems.

The Chargers aren't the best example of favoring a quality front office over coaching. Granted, they have a good front office, but when did they start winning? It was when Marty Schottenheimer was hired. They were 6-26 in 2000 and 2001. It took Schottenheimer a couple of years, but by 2004, they went 12-4, and including that season, they were 35-13 over his final three years in San Diego. To his credit, Norv hasn't screwed it up and the truth is, he's probably a better coach than he's given credit for. Not that it matters. The reality is that you need both. -
Its really not all that inaccurate. The Rams never finished higher than 22nd in the NFL in rushing attempts under Mike Martz. In 2002 and 2003, they managed just 1405 and 1496 rushing yards as a team, good for 30th in the NFL those two years, and followed that up with 1624 in 2004, which was 25th in the NFL. Now one could argue that Martz ran the ball just enough to make his offense work, and on that point, they'd be right. Even in the year when he got canned, they had a good overall offense.

I really don't care what his 'passer rating' was or any other stat, for that matter. I wasn't expecting Dan Marino after less than a week's worth of practice with the Bills' first team offense. He definitely didn't embarrass himself, and with the exception of a dumb throw late in garbage time, he avoided the really stupid mistakes you usually see from a guy making his first NFL start.

They could do worse, and for the last four years, they have. Ideally, I'd prefer that Weis be brought in as an OC, but as I've thought about it more, he might not be a bad HC candidate, either. There's no doubt in my mind that the Bills would have a competent offense under Weis, which at the very least would allow them to be competitive every week. One thing I'm pretty certain of is that if they keep finishing in the bottom quarter of the league offensively every year, they're never going to win anything. If Weis could turn that group around, it would go a long way to returning the Bills to respectability.
-
Keep him. He hasn't had a particularly good year, but he's only 23, has no serious injury history and has been pretty productive in previous years. If you trade him, you'll just have to draft someone else fairly high in order to replace him and probably won't receive much net value at all when all is said and done.
-
No better than 5th or 6th, depending upon strength of schedule as compared to Cleveland. In reality, they'll probably pick 8th-10th assuming they lose to the Colts.
-
Its too early to tell. I would only go so far as to say that I think Brohm probably deserves to be in the competition for the job. However, at this point, I would not let his presence on the roster alter any offseason plans for the QB position, up to and including the use of the first round pick at the position.
-
In absolute terms, I agree, but I wasn't expecting Brian Brohm to play like Peyton Manning.
-
I'd probably give him a seven. Considering that he was making his first start on an awful team, it could have been a lot worse.

Bills-Falcons Official Game Thread
Brandon replied to San Jose Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That's a pretty good half for a guy making his first NFL start. -
If he plays well enough that the Bills decide they can wait until the mid rounds to draft a QB, I guess I'm not going to complain. Its not like there are any guarantees of long term success with a 1st round QB, anyway.

Buffalo a "real player" for Vick next year
Brandon replied to Coach Tuesday's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That's true, they don't need me any more than I need them, but I would remind you that Philadelphia is far larger than Buffalo NY. They can much more easily replace alienated fans than the Bills can. Granted, considering that the Bills haven't signed Vick and have shown no verifiable interest in him, its all speculation now, anyway. -

Brandon replied to Coach Tuesday's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Speaking for myself, at this point in my life, the Bills are pretty low on the list of priorities. I'm a fan of this team, but it isn't unconditional. If they sign the guy, its a pretty clear indication to me that they don't want or need me as a fan of the team and under that situation, I'd have no issue whatsoever with cutting ties with this team.
