I won't reiterate my last 20 posts here, you can read them that will answer this question.
Also, I can't argue with made up data.
Granted, I don't have actual statistics, but I feel pretty comfortable in saying the most people with an 'R' after their name will support the police no matter what. Just watch Fox news. They have high ratings.
-
He's allowed his opinion. Just like we're allowed to call him an !@#$.
But his opinion seems to have something substantial behind it, you just don't like what you hear.
-
Or you could read his own explanation...
"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,"
Is it really that difficult for you to understand the reason for his protest?
yes, but then there would have been no reason for him to sit because this country does not condone that, so your question isn't relevant.
You must live with blinders on. There is probably close to half this country that wholeheartedly supports the police no matter what the video evidence.
-
You do indeed. Now why exactly is he an uninformed moron?
It's the part where he equates racist Americans with "a country" that oppresses blacks and people of color.
If he said the law enforcement and judicial systems that oppress blacks, would you feel better about that statement?
-
Sure do but I choose not to be a self important ingrate.
So if you aren't the victim, you are a self important ingrate if you stand up for victims?
-
I'm familiar with all this. I believe he was adopted before he could walk.
Thus, he never experienced life without a father, growing up in poverty. He has been a star athlete his whole life. He has no idea what oppression is.
Do you have to experience something to understand it?
-
He has every right and be a total disrespectful ahole.
as do you.

Wasn't referring to here in the U.S. The Poles were enslaved during the Nazi occupation of Poland, on top of millions that were killed during WW2. Irish were enslaved by the English. The point is, racism is not just an American issue, it's a worldwide issue. Some, like Kapernick, only see it as an an American problem and that law enforcement/government hates African Americans, and that's far from the truth. People are too quick to judge and place labels on others.
I'm certain Kaeperneck can attest to that.

I am aware of those instances. I took this discussion to be about the US.

Irish immigrants were definitely discriminated against for a long time in this country, but were never enslaved.
most immigrants were.
-
So, no one from Ireland and Poland were ever slaves?
I really don't remember hearing of any Irish or Polish slaves in the US. If I'm wrong, I'd be very interested in learning the truth.

I helped defend this country by serving eight years in the Marines. I find not standing for the national anthem to be very disrespectful.
What have you done for our country besides run your mouth?
Did you defend peoples first amendment rights or just the right to say and do what you want them to.
-
that is not even remotely my point. Now youre just being contrarian.
Because freedom allows us to be this different, we need a shared sense of patriotism to keep us from tearing ourselves apart.
As long as we can all stand together to celebrate our shared sense of unity from time to time, we'll be OK. When that ends ... buy gold.
I get your point, the problem is that we can't even agree on patriotism or on what freedom really means. Just look at this thread. Someone speaks his mind on an unpopular , controversial topic, some tell him it's ok to speak, others say shut up, others say leave the country. And nobody ever really changes their minds anymore. Hard to get in agreement on anything.
Real simple, pack your bags and leave.
If you don't like him exercising his first amendment rights, maybe you should leave the country.
-
He's was be being facetious. At least I think.
I don't think so. Not sure.
-
Yeah, but then another guy pointed out that electing a black president erased all that. So we good?
because we elected a black president, that means there's no more racism?
When is native american history month?
It's in November. Every year.
-
No, its not.
The only thing still holding this disparate bag of conflicting factions we call America together is a shared sense of patriotism.
We no longer worship the same God (if any), hold the same values, hang out at the same places, watch the same entertainment, etc. etc. We barely speak the same language anymore and sure as hell don't share a sense of filial kinship.
The one thing we still have (for now) is a sense that at least we live in a country where our differences can be strengths, and we can come together to acknowledge our equal shares in an inclusive society by standing together as one for the National Anthem.
By refusing to stand, he not only contributes to the decline of this shared ideal, he tells me personally he does not want to share his world with me, his fellow American.
IMO, he's just being a privileged rich athlete trying to justify the fact he gets paid millions of dollars to do nothing of real value for society.
And BTW, if America has lost Buffalo, we've lost the Nation.
Joe out.
nothing says freedom more than being forced to worship the same god, speak the same language.... basically told to live a certain way in all aspects of our lives.
-
Yes but injustices were done to a lot of people - American Indians, Japanese who were put in concentration camps while men were allowed to fight in Europe Only, etc. Not satisfactory answer. As a teacher you should point that out AND that it was done for political reasons.
You are correct, injustices were done to a lot of people, and they still are, including to blacks.
-
OK how about Mexico, Colombia (basically all of South America), China, Russia, Eastern Europe and the entire continent of Africa.
since we are better than other countries, just sit down( or stand up in this case) and shut up. Don't exercise your freedoms unless you have permission too.
-
Huh?
How is that racist?
the poster said it was racist, I agreed. Probably because the teacher ignored that fact that part of the reason black history month is recognized is because of the injustices done to blacks throughout our history and the need to recognize their contributions to this country, but not just as slaves.
-
Probably, but he did drive the point home pretty good.
all those Irish and polish slaves that were brought over from Africa are missing out on a history month.
-
Nothing wrong with showing respect for the country that allowed everyone to assemble in freedom and relative safety. After all, where do americans assemble in such masses?
I agree about canning the jet flyovers though.
He is protesting what he perceives (correct or not) as oppresions of blacks. Which goes against the freedoms you want him to respect. Get it?
-
he has the right to act as he chooses, that is what is great about our country (ironically). he also has the right to be booed by his fans (if they choose) or to be criticized by people who think his stance is misguided.
maybe a tour of syria might give him some perspective.
so we are better than Syria ? Setting the bar pretty high, aren't we?
-
Stuff like this always reminds me of one of my high school teachers, granted I'm sure he was a little racist.
Black student: How come black people only get one month for black history month.
Teacher: *looks my way* When's Polish history month?
Me: *shrugs*
Teacher: *looks at another student* When's Irish history month?
other student: *shrugs*
Teacher: *looks back at black student* Be happy you got one.
maybe more than a little racist.

Get the !@#$ out then Colin you pos.....you always respect your country's anthem no matter what your view points....
A country that has provided him millions of dollars to sling a football in which he basically sucks at
Maybe to him this is about a bit more than just money.

We should all do , think and say the same thing. Do what our leaders tell us and not question anything. Maybe we could wear brown uniforms with swastika armbands too!

What would it take for you to listen to him. Should he speak on a local radio station. If you want to be heard, you need to be loud.
And honestly, I've always found it odd to be 'forced' to show your respect lest you get lambasted on blogs across the country. It's like the pledge, if my kids don't recite the pledge as they are expected to do, my guess is there will be problems. It doesn't seem right.
