  1. Obviously his suspension ends after Sunday, but I haven't heard one word about him in weeks.

    Is he out of rehab?

Is he in shape(both physically and mentally) to play?

Of course, his well being is the most important thing, but the Bills sure could use him in the middle of that Defense as soon as possible.

I believe I read that Whaley said he would play, but a regular rotation because he's not ready to play full time.

  2. 5 games that is all he has missed so far in his career 5 games

his career is just over 2 seasons long, he's played at less than 100% in other games where he was ineffective and it's likely he will miss more this season. I'm not a 'sammy's a bust or injury prone' fan, but the reality is that he has not often and likely will not for some time, contribute to this team. It's not good any way people try to look at it.

  3.

I can assure you that he would worse...since he's suspended for the first 4 games. But Gillislee has only had 3 carries. Why they're not giving him more is anyone's guess.

It's hardly a guess. To give him more carries means giving McCoy less carries, and that doesn't make any sense at all.

I considered that, but you don't necessarily want Shady carrying the ball a lot (and he can be used in the passing game as well) anyway. Giving MG an average of one carry a game isn't a good idea.

    Why not? He's very good.

  4. Um, if he's not on a roster & collecting a paycheck, then how can he be suspended? The suspension is supposed to serve as a penalty. How can he be serving a suspension, and most specifically, sacrificing his gamecheck, if he's not on a roster & collecting said gamecheck?

I started to explain this and then realized it would be a waste of time.

Drugs, weight, work ethic, concussions....those are all the problems. Listen I loved the way he played but the Bills aren't going to force him to be a professional. They tried twice during OTA's and Training camp and he still couldn't get his issues together. Then he gets caught smoking weed on top of it.

I recall the Bills mentioning 'other issues' in terms of trust among teammates that they wouldn't get into. He's not coming back.

  5. Everyone saying "he'll just run slants and catch short passes - powell can do that" don't understand press coverage. Sammy has great hands at the line and can get open off press coverage pretty consistently. Maybe he won't have his deep speed, but his route running and beating players off the line are top notch. He's also a better blocker than goodwin/powell.

Didn't Powell drop a couple passes Sunday? I think Sammy is better.

  6. I was wondering, do you guys think if he had stayed your playoff streak would have been broken last year? He had the team going in the right direction just had a terrible O.

    Very legit question.

We had a championship caliber defense.

Special teams was coming off a strong season, Carpenter had a great year.

It all depends on how we dealt with the offense during the offseason. McCoy likely would have happened regardless of the head coach, not sure who the QB would have been. We probably would have been much more competitive than we were with Rex, and I didn't really think Marrone was that good of a coach, but he was young and might have improved. We would not be in as bad a shape as we are now if he stayed.

So, Marrone leaving hurt, but the decision to hire Rex hurt much more.

  7. is there any Stats showing how successful firing a OC and/or DC is?

You spend all off season and training camp installing a system. I don't believe it's realistic to change systems during the season, so what will change? Play calling? Talent hasn't changed. When you fire the OC you are saying the talent is there, but it's not being utilized to it's potential. I don't know what to expect, but I'm not optimistic.

  8.

I don't see how it's a scapegoat firing, the offense has legitimately sucked. We came within one down of being shut out last week. 31 points this week is incredibly deceptive, as 7 were off a broken play, 7 were from the defense, and 7 were in garbage time. Slightly more credit for the bomb to Goodwin. But we scored 3 points off of "normal" drives.

The defense was actually playing pretty good in the first quarter. They were most likely worn down by the 2:1 TOP disadvantage that stems from a completely incompetent offense that can't pick up first downs.

the Jets went up and down the field against us and scored on their first 4 possessions. The defense did not play well at all.

  9.

I gotta say, this is one of the most transparent scapegoat firings in recent memory.

Honestly, had they done this after week 1, few would argue...but after letting Fitzpatrick hang 37 points on you...seems pretty obvious Rex is scared. I'd expect the blame game to continue as the losses pile on.

It has to be scapegoat firing - what possibly could have changed so much to fire your OC after just 2 weeks? This is unheard of.

  10. Cowher is a delegator. He had a great defensive coaching staff. and decent offensive coordinators. He would be fine as a head coach. That said Can't imagine him wanting to coach or anyone wanting to hire him .

If he were to come back and coach, why would he choose buffalo of all places. It's been a train wreck for a long long time.

  11. Yes, because he proved it worked before and I think they share the same concepts but he lets the players have a lot more freedom and he orchestrates a lot more pressure on the QB. Let's face it, there are a lot of Tampa 2 guys, 3-4 guys, 4-3 guys etc... but its how you as a coach put your personal finger prints on it to make it your defense. What kind of guy you are during game situations? How good are you at game planning? How good are you at making game time adjustments? How good at scouting the opposing teams offense and being able to attack their weaknesses. Klos63 you can't just ditch everything during the 3rd week.

Please note where I said to ditch everything in week 3. I just disagreed with hiring Pettine- our defense stunk under him, how many 200 yard rushing games did we give up?

  12. I would like to see Rex, his brother and the DC fired ASAP! Keep Greg Roman because you don't want to change the offense and start over until next year, if time tells he can't get it done. I would name Greg Roman the interim Head Coach. If he doesn't improve things he gets fired at the end of the season. Immediately hire Petine to run the defense. Because he worked under Rex it won't be a major change, especially with terminology. Change is needed!

You would hire someone that runs the same system that's already not working with these players?

  13. how can you say that? They hired one coach and they are part of the dysfunction ?

It wasn't just the hiring of Rex, but the ramifications on the elite defense with a totally different system. That was a championship quality defense that was destroyed with the hire. Also, for some reason, Marrone didn't want to work for Pegula. Maybe he was smarter than we give him credit for.

  14.

John it isn't. As much as I want to have hope/faith; this is a bad team and might go down as one of our worst ever. The only option is to run out the season and fire everyone immediately after that last game. Pegs needs to drill another well and get Wolf or someone like him (I really do not like Casserly) in here to hire a GM and coach. Players will be released/traded and the rebuild will begin...If you cut Rex lose now who do you promote? Rob? Dennis Thurman? Roman? :death:

This is over and it needs to be over...

Edit: Fire Rex and Hire Coughlin

Why would Coughlin or any other respectable coach want to come to Buffalo. It's where careers go to die.

  15. How many middle screens?

I think that the screens to the flat are shut down due to them playing our receivers right on the line.

Middle screens would draw the defense toward the middle, freeing up the outside.

ran that first play of the game. McCoy almost got killed.

Fans sometimes make things seem so simple. If bodies go to the outside , defenders will go there too. Middle screens draw the defense when you throw middle screens.

  16. Howard Simon is also debating watching the hockey game tonight. How can you host a sports talk show and not watch a game that was watched by almost 28M Americans last year? Isn't that kind of something that you need to be on top of?

I live out in Phoenix, I was listening to local sports radio a few years ago and the host said something about having no interest in hockey, doesn't understand it...., I was thinking the same as you, why do you have this job?

  17. ...yes, it's always a danger to many when I start thinking, I know.

However, I've done some research on Vitale, which only adds to my prior thinking, after seeing us run the wishbone  last game. I noticed his position was "super-back" at Northwestern, because he would line up in so many different positions. The Bucs drafted him, and some of their fans hyped it, because of this versatility, and because he was thought of as a possible successor to Mike Alstott.

However, during their camp, 2 things became clear: 1. They already had 5 TEs on their roster(so...why the F did you draft him with your 6, and ask him to not be versatile, but play straight TE instead?) 2. He didn't block better than the other 5 TEs, which is ostensibly why they released him. The entire thing seems like an exercise in stupid choices.

Now, we pick him up. Hey, he was a NFL Combine champion, so why not, right? No. There are some key differences to our offense compared to theirs both from a scheme and personnel viewpoint:

Personnel: we have Shady, Reggie(Gil is a backup to these 2), Williams, and Gronkowski made the team. They have 3 RBs total(including Doug Martin who requires being featured), no Fullback, and all of their TEs are "standard" TE body-types.

Scheme: First, understand that I'm talking "normal offense" here. Anybody can line up anybody for things like goal line, 4th down and inches, etc. Tampa runs some 2 TEs plays(or else why did you keep 5?), but, they are never going to do anything more than have a single back, or no back, with only 3 RBs on the team.

Our scheme...is where things get interesting. We already expect to see RB/FB/TE/WR/WR on the field for say 30% of the plays, at least. That is a Roman base package. We should see RB/RB/TE/WR/WR, or, RB/RB/FB/TE/WR given Reggie Bush.

So, why Vitale? To compete with Gronk? Nah. He's more of a pass catcher than a runner, but, unlike a normal TE, he can run the football. How about to compete with our other TEs? Maybe. But, we already have Clay, and O'Leary is already the pass-catching TE type, who made the team because his blocking improved(thus, why would we claim a guy who's blocking hasn't?)

What the hell is it then? My hypothesis: we are getting set up to run the single-wing. Just replace the left side "end" with Cordy Glenn reporting as eligible. Perhaps not the actual single-wing, but something fairly close. Vitale is the wingback in that formation. Evidence: we kept 4 OTs, Henderson is good enough to start, and KJO could do the extra OT job too. There's your unbalanced guy(the single wing uses 3 OTs). Adding an extra OT is damaging to teams that are set up to defend the pass. Then, consider the buck-lateral series. Which, from, the link:

Vitale's "super-back" position is defined by the bolded above.

What's to stop us from going RB/FB/FB(or wing back)/TE or WR, with an extra OT, as called for by the single wing? Can you imagine the play action on that thing. Actually, it would be play actions, because we could be faking to 3 different guys coming out of the backfield(RB/FB/WB), at least one of whom will release into a short out pattern as a safety valve.

Also, consider the damage that a direct snap to Gronk/Vitale causes. He can "buck", which means run over the center, guards or extra tackle, or behind one of them as they pull. (EDIT: and don't forget, the extra lineman means double teams on all DTs, or firing right off the ball at the LBs) But, he can also hand the ball off to the QB, or pitch it back. He can hand it off to the WB, as the WB cuts back across the field, where he can either run it, or, pitch it back to the QB or RB. Meanwhile, if the TE/WR or TE/TE or WR/WR have run patterns, it sets up a 2nd line of blockers behind the line, for the QB to wait until they get open. In all cases, it creates overloads, on either end, of more blockers, and bigger guys, that the CBs and Ss should lose to.

Rather than ask Vitale to block LBs and DEs, this scheme asks him to block CBs and Ss, or release into a pattern, both of which play to his his strengths.

I dunno about all this, but there has to be a reason we would pick this guy up, and right now, running the single wing, against defenses that are designed to blitz and cover, with smaller, faster guys? When you have bigger guys that are going to move the point of attack away from where the D wants it to be? And, you have a running QB, who is also athletic enough to run, then set his feet, then throw 60 yards down the field, as we saw against the Giants?

This seems like a logical explanation, at least.

I really doubt we are going to restructure our offense off a rookie we just picked up off the waiver wire. We are going to hand the ball off to McCoy a lot and we are going to try to throw to Sammy a lot.

  18. I personally would not have played it this way.....if Lorenzo outplayed everyone and won the spot....great.....but behind him we now have a undrafted rookie (even though Albright has looked pretty good)

I would have kept the vet behind the vet....doensnt mean I am not excited about this team as a whole

Fair enough, but Lawson had a big contract for a backup, and no matter how we shuffle around some of these players, our front 7 isn't looking to good out of the gate right now.
