  1. Yup, they'll have 8 in the box.

I hope the defenses put 8 in the box. Even with just 3 WR in play in man coverage, at least one will get open. More than 3, someone definitely open.

Defenses usually will try to stop the run first, no matter what, so I think that will be the choice against us. Hopefully, our defense will get us a couple short field opportunities that will result in points and more pressure on the other offense to open it up, which is what we want.

  2.

Until the Bills show that they can throw the ball successfully teams are going to dare them to do so. They did it last year and you can expect more of the same until one of our QBs can force them to back off.

You should just admit you were wrong in saying that teams will use an 8 man front against us. It will only happen when we are on the opponents goal line. Our QB's aren't great, but they aren't horrible either.

  3. Smart move. He actually graded out fairly well according to PFF metrics - until Marrone moved him to left guard.....

Year Right Guard Left Guard All Guards

    2011 11th 20th

    2012 13th 25th

    2013 11th 20th

    2014 31st 53rd

I know it's easy to blame Marrone for the line problems last year, but it really does point toward something being done wrong last year. Would be great for us if that was the case and the new staff would fix those issues. Makes life much easier.

  4.

Easily, if he was a good player he would be starting...some backups are trainwrecks when they get in there...a backups main job is to do well enough that the team isn't hamstrung when he is in there by having to give extra help to him...Urbik does that well enough...

i think the point was, if you can't block well as a starter, why would you expect him to block well as a backup when inserted in the game. The biggest benefit with Urbik would be familiarity with linemates, which is significant.

  5. I'll say it again...watch the last three minutes of the Minnesota game and tell me how Hogan did not fight, claw and sacrifice his body (horizontally) to make the catch. Then...close your eyes and picture him doing that as a CB with a good 3" on most WR's in the league. We're talking numbers here and with the arrival of Harvin, Hogan is a waste at WR. He could easily convert so why not maximize his talents at CB and take advantage of the demand for CB's by exploring the Gilmore angle as well.

every WR probably has made a tough catch or 2 in their careers, doesn't mean they could be a successful CB. Maybe he could do it, but he's not even that good of a WR, you make it sound too simple to convert from WR to CB, it's not like it happens all the time. It took Gilmore a couple years to become the solid CB we hoped for , you're expecting Hogan to be good enough without a couple year learning curve? For some reason people find certain players they become infatuated with and can't come to grips with the fact that they might not be as good as they want him to be. Hogan might be one of those.

  6. No, the kid is coming into his own as a slot WR. Runs great routes and has awesome hands. Depth at WR is a luxury.

except when he drops the ball, which happened a number of times last year.

Are you suggesting shifting glass goodwin to corner too? Interesting.

Get goodwin and hogan on the outside as corners, shift mckelvin to more of a nickel, and then we can let Gilmore walk instead of paying him big bucks in free agency.

I could get on board with that.

Can't wait for training camp, then hopefully these ridiculous threads with equally ridiculous comments might go away for a while. If this was a sarcastic post , I apologize. I mean, I hope this was a sarcastic post.

  7. Yeah, you are right. It is a totally different argument if they had to decide between Clay and Wisniewski for example, but they don't. The Bills have managed the cap, dare I say, flawlessly to this point. They still have the requisite cap space to finish off the roster building and maintain the flexibility to go after a player that may hit the market down the road. In addition, they have some tools in their back pocket (ie Mario restructure & Urbik/C. Williams release) that can open up even more room without doing any damage. The cap is not an issue at all (at this point) regardless of what the offer for Clay looks like, despite what that great football mind Mike Rodak may be writing.

When we sign a free agent, there are basically 2 reactions- 1- good signing, fills a need for us. or 2.) what about cap space, we overpaid...i think we could just draft someone in round 3 and get equal production....

  8. If there is anyone remaining that still thinks Miami made those roster moves in the interest of freeing up cap space in order to sign Clay to a new deal, this should remove all doubt.

    GO BILLS!!!

The transition tag of $7 million already counts against their cap for 2015, so they wouldn't have to make any more moves, if they did sign him to a long term deal, it would probably reduce their hit for this season.

  9. Dolphins also love Sims. He's got size, can catch, block and give you a complete game at the position. Be a strong 1-2 punch for them. If Clay signs with us for more $$ than Cameron did with Miama I'll be really annoyed. Cameron was a real difference maker on a Cleveland team with ZERO offense.

you seem to be pretty hung up on how to spend other people's money.

  10.

Clay is a better H-back than Chandler. TE? I disagree. If H-Back is the preferred position of scheme for Roman than he's getting one of the better ones. If TE is what he wants, he would be getting one too short, too weak of a blocker and little production as an intermediate/deep threat receiver. Remember, he's significantly slower than Vernon Davis, and will not stretch the field as a receiver like that for us.

I wouldn't overpay for Clay. If it were me, I'd rather grab a TE with our 1st pick who can play a complete game. Save our money to upgrade the OL.

But you have no idea what the Bills are looking for in personnel and they do.

  11. Lets say that Clay is younger by 3 years. Age in and of itself does not guarantee ascending talent.

Players switching teams sometimes perform better - ex Jerry Hughes, sometimes much worse like Albert Haynesworth, lesser Stevie Johnson, Mike Williams,

I was referring to this post -

so I compared the 2 as non blocking TE's.

I can deal with younger .... but at ~ 4 times the salary estimated $9 Mil to $1,9Mil ... it makes you question the deal

it makes you question the deal, not me. I am one of those that doesn't get all worked up about the salary cap. I just want great players on the team. I will let the Pegula's worry about paying the bills.

  12. Regarding the O-Line, Icognito was a move to improve it. Glenn and Woods are likely staying put. The coaching staff may feel good with some of the young player and Chris Williams to improve from last year.

Also, there will likely be cuts after June 1st and with that another opportunity to bring in other players.

You can't fill every hole , but there is still time if they wish to try.

  13. So, I'm watching the GEICO commercial with Kenny Rogers and it hit me. The Clay situation is the classic gambler trap where pursuing the desired card takes away from focusing on the hand and what everyone has on the table.

Hopefully, Bills can take a step back and realize that by trying to keep Clay, Dolphins have hurt their team. They should keep him because these moves made them worse. To get under the cap, they gutted the roster. They don't have the roster flexibility and they'll have to do a lot of moving to Suh's contract next year to squeeze in Tanneyhill.

They finished 8-8 last year and never had the look of a team that was just on the verge.

Granted, Suh gives them a lot of heft on the DL, but outside Wake, they don't have depth. Their LB corps took a beating with the roster moves, and what can you say about a team where Kelvin Sheppard is a starting ILB. Their secondary was average and hasn't improved.

On offense, the QB is average, the RBs are subpar and the WRs are now Landry & Stills. Uhhm, mkay. So yeah, let them have the toy TEs.

In the end, this will end up better for the Bills.

I haven't followed everything the dolphins have done, obviously signing Suh and getting Stills,Cameron.... how have they gutted their roster? Seems like the saved some money getting rid of Wallace. I think Miami has a better handle on their cap situation then anyone here.

  14. Blalock ?

Thats was my pick for value when he came available . good run blocker and solid enough

Rightio. I was responding about to the fellow who mentioned "why be concerned , it not our money"

of course its not. But when the bills run out of spendables. The FA is over for us Fans.

I dont want to spend on Harvin when it SEEMS they have glaring needs at TE and G to me.

Ralph is still cheap , i just know it.

There probably aren't many guards or TE's left that will command big dollars other than Clay

  15. I believe the cap is a factor in free agency and team building. Do you think it's irrelevant?

of course it's not irrelevant, but as i have and so have many others stated here, the team is much more aware of their situation then we are. I guess I can't get over everyone seeming to understand the implications more then the team. The cap goes up considerably each year, teams are loaded with money to help restructure existing deals to create even more space. It's rarely a concern for a team, unless, like new orleans, you go all out in one year and it doesn't pan out.

The point is at what expense in the future though. That is why people are focusing on the cap. No one is saying they aren't getting better. All I see are people saying they are actively pinching themselves in the future.

Cap is expected to go up 10 million next year, maybe again in 2017. I think people are looking for a silver lining to Miami and other teams signing lots of talent.
