Their is none. Time will tell.
That's my view as well.

Throughout the past week , I've found it very interesting how most posters react to a hire. It's basically, how the player/players he most recently coached performed, maybe league ranking, but really not much of a thought out critique encompassing factors such as player quality, team quality, full body of work, the situation they will be coming into....
Roman for example was a hot commodity 2 years ago for a head coach after Kaepernicks great Super Bowl season, now since he took a step back this year, some think Roman is a bad choice.
I seems like those who want to criticize the hire will find one negative and attribute it to the new hire and condemn it.
Would like to know your thoughts on a fair way to assess a new hire.

It amazes me how people continue to suggest moving Glenn inside to guard. Glenn is obviously best suited for LT and has played well there. Henderson had a good season at RT and will only get better giving the Bills two young bookends for possibly the next decade so why in the world would anyone even suggest changing that?
This team needs guards, not tackles trying to play guard but true guards. Guys who have no problem pulling and gettout out in front on screens.
Im all for signing a guard in FA and drafting another fairly high.
I don't think there has been a team that ever had both tackles for a decade. Just doesn't happen.

He didn't seem to do as well in Chicago where he was OL Coach and OC in 2013 and OC in 2014.
Their line ranked 19th in 2013 and 15th in 2014 according to PFF.
https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2015/01/08/2014-pff-offensive-line-rankings/3/
2014 seemed to be quite a mess for the whole organization, but in 2013 they put up some great offensive numbers. Forte, Marshall and Jeffery all had tremendous seasons. And like others have said, seems like quite an upgrade from this past season for us.

If it wasn't clear before, it should be now.
Again, not the posts I referenced, but if it makes you happy , I know why you don't like the hire. Still, i'll trust Ryan over you, no offense.
-
I think people made it very clear the problem they had with the guy. He violated the trust of his players by being an undermining rat. But yeah I'm sure his players won't have it in the back of their heads that they might not be able to trust him. I understand that Kromer was well regarded at one time in NOLA. But these thoughts shouldn't be entering their minds with a Rex Ryan"family and loyalty" staff. This hiring is completely incongruent with the identity Rex is selling. I don't get how a demoted Modkins is worth this.
Actually, no post that I referenced made it clear that the problem was the violation of trust. One said his OL was bad and that he knew nothing about the guy, the other just didn't like the hire, no reason given.
-
He's a RAT! Oh, and his Chicago offense sucked hard. He created quite the circus in Chicago though.
Why do you think Roman/Ryan hired him?
-
Noooooooooooo!!!
Crazy how upset I get at this, but wow. Wow. Not happy about this. I don't know anything about the guy, but Chicago's OL was bad. Maybe it was the talent. Maybe it was the coaching. An uninspiring hire IMO.
You don't know anything about him, so maybe getting immediately upset about the hire is probably a bit premature and greatly overreacting. I'm guessing the person that hired him might know something about him. Let him at least show up for work before you criticize.
Don't like this hire at all. What happened with Solari?
Please tell me why this isn't a good hire, why Roman is making a mistake in evaluating this coach.
-
Can Marrone put together a staff after screwing over so many just recently?
-
Most teams with Headless Coaching staffs let the rest of the former coach's staff do their own thing because there is no guarantee that the new head honcho will retrain any of them.
Both the 9ers and the Skins are headless at the mo.
Did I miss something - Did the skins fire Gruden?
-
I thought that during the game. Pretty funny.

I bet you most people who are saying we don't have the players for the scheme change were saying the exact same thing last year when Pettine was leaving. We're going from a 3-4 to a 4-3, we're gonna play this stupid wide 9 and we don't have the players for it. Jerry Hughes is too small to play DE and he's going to get killed in the run. We lost Byrd. We have no linebackers and then Kiko got hurt.
Not me. I wasn't thrilled with our defense in 2013. Thought Pettine was overrated, Kiko overrated. Was very happy when we signed Schwartz.
-
I think Schwartz did a great job, but the key to that run defense was probably Spikes. If they keep him and Kiko comes back, look for an even more dominant defense. Check that. Look for a dominant defense. Our defense was very good, but not dominant.
But what if Spikes doesn't come back. Also, where does Kiko play in a 3-4 - not the middle , he isn't strong enough. Can he play on the line as an OLB? I'm not sure. I'll admit I don't know enough about how this will work out, but I'm concerned about switching defenses. Not sure we have the right people for a 3-4.
-
I'm fine with Schwartz gone. The defense was great but hell a drunk monkey could make that defense look good. I like that Rex is brining in his guy. Less time to "get acquainted" and Rex and Schwartz would have bumped heads... A lot.
they didn't look that good the year before. Schwartz did an excellent job.
-
Pettines defense in Buffalo wasn't very good except for nice sack stats. Horrible against the run.
Yeah, that and the best pass defense in the NFL by opponent QB rating against...
Likely because teams would run for 200-300 yards a game and making it quite easy to pass when they wanted to.
-
It looked bad when Pettine left.
We will be fine with Rex running basically the same D as Pettine with the same players.

Kapernick's play regressed this year under Roman/Harbaugh, which isn't a good sign.
Does this mean Roman used to be a good coach , but isn't anymore.
-
My post was written from a Bills FO perspective. It doesnt do the team any good to make Schwartz Asst HC since it doesnt give us any additional leverage to keep him around. The only reason you give guys that title is to shield them from getting cherry-picked by other teams.
Whether any of them would accept the "promotion" would be up to them.
Ok, i get your perspective. I just don't see someone locking themselves in with a 'faux' promotion that limits their ability to move up in the coaching ranks.
-
There's no need to make Schwartz an Asst Head Coach. We can already deny interviews for a DC spot, and we still cant deny interviews for a HC spot (even as an Asst HC).
It only makes sense to give Johnson, Henderson, or Thurman the title so other teams are forced to ask permission for anything but a HC spot.
Makes no sense, so Pepper Johnson would change his title to assistant HC, hurting his chances of getting his wish to be a DC.
-
keeps a good D coach and brings in another for depth
not necessarily, is it just a title or added responsibility? My guess is these guys want to coach with their system and their assistants. Just handing out a new title might not appease them.

After reading how he was born when his father coached at UB and he lived in Toronto, I think he will relate to Bills fans. I'm happy with the hire, and convinced he is a HUGE upgrade over Maroone. Either way.. Let's Go Bills!!!!
He will relate to Bills fans by winning.
-
I'm not saying he wants to leave. Not sure Ryan wants him to stay or will make it easy for him to stay. I would like to keep Schwartz.....
You have Ryan's defensive staff in NY and Schwartz's in Buffalo, not enough room for them all. What happens? Will Schwartz fire some of his and stay as DC?
-
Typically with coaches and players the past is a decent indicator of the future. But there is no guarantee Rex will even give the Bills two good years. Then again, he might be a raging success. I sure hope they hired Rex with better logic than "maybe he won't flop because things could change".
I'm not sure how typical it is or isn't. Off the top of my head I can think of a number of coaches with more success the 2nd time around. Belicheck, Levy, Carroll, Rivera, probably quite a few that flamed out after success. I think it all comes down to good timing, Marv was the right coach at the right time for the Bills, I would think with a strong offense, being a good coach, Ryan could be the right coach at the right time.
-
Not sure if you've followed football in the last decade or two, but there's a salary cap in place.
I'm well aware of the cap, wise ass. The teams are also aware. Still seems stupid for the fans to sit and question how much is too much to spend on a player when they have no clue as to what the overall plan of the team is, salary wise, and personnel wise.
And the poster just said he didn't want to pay much for a guard, no mention of salary cap.
What is a fair way to judge a hew hire?

I think you take into account much of what has been discussed here. With Marv, take it to account what he started with and was progress being made. With Crossman, management acknowledged he didn't have much to work with, they gave him quality players in year 2 and they were great.
I guess the point of my original post was that it's pretty ridiculous to criticize a hire they day they sign, before they even get to meet their players. It takes time, sometimes a couple years in progress.
