  1. I an being serious. You called it a stupid rule. But if there is no rule on ball inflation, then a flat ball is legal.

I guess by being serious, I was saying - do you seriously think a team would use of flat ball? Not really going to help the passing game. If you would like , I will state I am totally against having a totally flat ball to be legal.

A few months back, I read about someone who was involved in creating this rule. He said it was a poorly written rule and he couldn't even remember why they made it a rule.

  2.

oh boy...you are about to be skewered as a traitor, communist, and terrorist.

    I know, I'm ready.

You are overlooking the fact that under-inflated balls are easier to carry without fumbling. That's a huge advantage. Also, at what point is there too little air in the ball? You're gonna let teams carry a flat ball because they like it?

I enjoy a serious conversation about this topic. It's very complex. So when you decide to be serious, please post again.

  3. Tony Kornheiser on PTI yesterday said "it's not like the NFL is going to vacate the Patriots Super Bowl victory" over Deflategate. That got me thinking about the whole notion of cheating. Has any team ever had a title rescinded because of cheating? Has any baseball team ever faced consequences if one or more of their players used PED's?

In a nutshell: there is no downside to cheating. If you win a title, no league would have the nerve to take it away. Maybe a player of coach gets suspended or the team pays a fine or loses a draft pick, but in the end you are still champs. No asterisk, no blemish, just a title.

So instead of worrying about what the Patriots get away with, why not outdo them at their own game?

The punishment also needs to fit the crime. Yes, they broke the rule. However, it's a stupid rule which should be tossed immediately. The league wants QB's to be comfortable with the balls they use in the game. They are allowed to practice with them all week, scuff them if they want, choose which ones are used in the game and the team has control of them throughout. Each team does this. I don't understand why there is a rule about PSI of the ball. If you want the QB to be most comfortable with the balls, let them be totally comfortable.

I don't believe the Patriots had an unfair advantage, cheating yes, serious - no at all.

  4. I think it's more along the lines of an owner that became wealthy and wasn't born into it. The Pegula's seem to be some of the most humble and down to earth people. That makes them great owners, IMO.

Can't imagine a player really cares how the owners got their money... as long as they sign his check they'll be happy.

There are a lot of folks wearing Bills colored glasses.

That's great, i hope you don't mind if I steal that phrase occasionally. I'll give you the credit of course.

  5. I thought they moved him to tackle already :bag:

but regardless , there is going to be a battle of the guards

does that really matter for a kid who is looking to play and make his dime?

we are lucky that some players have decided to settle down here and become part of the community.

if i have a milllion bucks i can send my kid to any school i want.

non issue even at 485 thousand. no issue.

will i play? will we win? will I get the chance to excel

I'm sure it does for some of them. But all things being equal, i bet more players would choose san diego over buffalo.

Buffalo gets plenty of sun even in winter.

either this is sarcasm or you really don't get it.

  6. My two kids go to public school in Miami (the Palmetto schools in Pinecrest). Both my kids are in the gifted program, which is tremendous. I cannot imagine paying for a better education. I have nothing against private schools (I went to Nichols), but I have to tell you that there are some pretty darn good public schools in Miami. I also have to say that the current superintendent of the Miami-Dade public school system (Alberto Carvalho) is outstanding.

That is not to say that all public schools in Miami are great. Indeed, there are some schools that I would never send my kids to, but there also are some schools in Buffalo and Erie County that I would never want my kids to attend.

    Just my two cents.

I think some people get so caught up in the 'please love buffalo' thing that they fail to realize there are more than a few other nice places to live in this country. Good schools, safe neighborhoods and you get to see the sun more than occasionally.

  7. With only two picks in the first four rounds it makes the most sense for the Bills to trade down to acquire more picks. They need to fill several positions - one maybe two OLs, one maybe two TEs, a DT, an OLB/DE hybrid, a S, and Santa even a QB would be nice. That's 8 players with only 6 picks.

Not gonna happen without some guts & creativity.

Whaley is a dealer (which I love) and which I think is the best way to obtain what you need more readily. Expect to see him trade down multiple times to acquire more picks and then use those picks to maneuver his way into filling the team's potential needs. It's a lot cheaper in the short run to fill backup roles with draft picks than having to pay vet FAs, plus you have that

"potential high reward" on your side.

Potential Whaley moves considering that there are some pretty good vet players available via trade:

    1. Trade R2 (#50) + R6 for later R2 + R3 + R5.

    2. Trade R3 (#81) + R7 for later R3 + R4 + R6.

    Bills picks(8): R2,R3,R3,R4,R5,R5,R6,R6.

    R2: OT

    R3: TE C. Walford

    R3: OLB/DE hybrid

    R4: DT

    R5: S

R5: Trade for vet TE Mart. Bennett (Chi.)

    R6: QB S. Mannion

R6: Trade for vet OG E. Mathis (Phily)

Here's to Whaley and the Bills having great success the next few days.

I'm ok with acquiring more picks, - you should have stopped right there. The rest of this boarders on ridiculous... trade for Bennett - does Chicago want to do this, same with Mathis. A team would really give up a 2, 3 and a 5 to move up a few spots in the 2nd round? Even though we give them a 6th, still makes no sense.

Not just directed at you, but has a trade ever been suggested out of the blue that ever happened?

  8. I would allow the local communities to buy the franchise from the billionaires. Green Bay is publicly owned, but the NFL wants to keep the ownership in the Billionaire Old Boys Club and prevent the fans from owning their own team. The current situation allows the billionaires to blackmail the local taxpayers into financing new stadiums for them or threaten to move the team to a different city.

The NFL is in the greed and extortion business.

then you could play in the same crap stadium for 70 years.

They renovated the stadium for $295 million in 2003, another $378 million in 2015, not sure how it helps the taxpayers.

a bit of an overstatement, wouldn't you say?

  9. Stop players from leaving their feet to make a tackle. A DB is going to kill a WR one of these days.

Stop the clock to move the chains after a first down like in college. Makes the final minutes more exciting.

Centralize coaches challenges in the main office for review, just like hockey does. Quicker, smoother process, easier to do.

Change the name of the Washington football team, this is beyond ridiculous.

  10. The games are far from meaningless. Many player's lives/careers depend on these games. Coaches, players, front office staffs all need these games to build continuity. As a fan of course they are tough sit through because we are anxious for the real thing. However, football is the ultimate team game and so much of the quality product we see in the beginning of the regular season is built from the training camp/preseason timeframe.

They are meaningless from a fans standpoint. Most team developing is from training camp, not from games. Games don't have game plans, you aren't on the field with players you would be on with during the regular season...., they are mostly useless.

well said.. i might add that much of the poor quality of play we see to start the season is the result of a truncated pre-season used primarily to develop a roster, rather than practice game concepts against live competition... this has been limited to approximately the first 2-3 quarters of the third game.

What poor quality at the beginning of the season? Can you qualify that comment with actual facts?

  11. So broke back Williams at LG ?

I dont like that one bit.

and i dont feel they are bringing a FA in.

Urbik can play RG much much better than lg. and i would say he should be a backup to the Center. But as it sits, i think its Glenn-Richie Woods-Urbik-Henderson.

Tell me why you think Incognito goes to RG ?

Because Williams is a LG and right now the best option there. Therefore, the other guard spot is Incognito at RG. I doubt the Bills convinced Urbik to take a pay cut to be starter.

  12. Eric has been middlin'. Last years line was just bad. and the year before was questionable.

Give S Henderson another season and a real coach in Kromer.

Urbik? My point is that line up would /could be worlds better than what was fielded last year under Marrone.

I have been expecting and FA upgrade at RG. And the Bills went looking for an upgrade at Tackle

Won't Incognito be on the right side, with Williams, at least for now, on the left?

They need a tackle, even if Henderson starts. No viable backup at this point, and certainly no starter should Henderson not improve.

  13. Wood was awful at times last year. He needs a surrounding cast which includes RB and QB who are on the same page.

I think very strongly that if Richie going to give it his all in prepping for this year. Not worried at all about his personality disorder. Playing next to Eric will do wonders for the both of them. Glenn has already gained praise by his conditioning Coach for coming in so well , well , conditioned !!

Heck i think if Seantrel and Urbik man the right side we might have something.

This one hell of a post.

Maybe your best and most coherent work.

    Well done

Wood needs to figure it out, for some reason he's getting off a bit easy with everyone assuming the problem was the guards, not him. He was never great to begin with , there will be no excuses for him this season.

Urbik won't start and Seantrel is still a bit scary on the end.

  14. Lordy i hope so.

i would love to see some continuity and execution from the O line this year. I think Wood and Incognito and Glenn could dominate, if only because of communication. trust and Kromer

    Lordy, I hope so too.

Glenn was dominant 2 years ago, not sure about Incognito. Wood has never been dominant, hopefully he will be 'good' and no breakdowns.

  15. I know this has been discussed elsewhere but Ryan+ Ran+ Shady+ Incognito doesn't necessarily mean a dominant running attack. Where did we rank last year? Can Roman use Shady correctly or is it square peg, round hole? If not, who's the featured power back, Freddy? Bryce, Boobie?I can't imagine the o line doesn't perform better but that doesn't mean they will become world beaters, especially when they are trying to learn brand new blocking schemes.

Did Kyle Williams play in the Raiders game last year? How did the D look in that game with ALL the chips on the table. Nothing is a given when a team is trying to reinvent itself.

I don't expect a dominant running attack, and I wouldn'l label it a power back, it's a running back. I believe the phrase 'power running game' confuses some people. It's an offense that want's the running game to be it's strength and will sometimes have 'power formations' , meaning FB, 2 TE...., that type of offense. The RB's need to follow blocks like any other offense, no RB is going to 'power' through lineman and LB much larger than them.

I expect the line to be better, but more so I expect the offense to be run better on the hole. But I've said a few times before , the strength of this team will be defense and it will help us win, not just by preventing the other offense from succeeding, but by taking pressure off our offense by giving them short fields to score with and keeping the games close and not putting too much pressure on the offense. Then a big play or 2 a game by some of the talent on offense could win games for us.

I think the most important feature in Roamin's and Kramers offense and how the learning curve is timelined will be UN learning Maroon and N Hackett/Morris debauchery

I'm guessing the players blocked that all out as soon as Marrone quit.

  16. As I read all these posts about which QB should start, and playoffs here we come , I think we need to remember we are starting from scratch on offense and defense.

Both squads will be learning new terminology and play designs as well as new overall philosophies.

Last year it took close to half the season for the safeties and DBs to get it together. Our defensive backfield was sketchy during parts of the the first half of the season.

On offense, it sounds like they will be doing a lot more pre snap as Roman is a real OC. My guess is he won't be able to install everything this year.

If we start off the year with an easy first half schedule, I give us a better chance at the post season but if we have 4-5 tough games on the first eight, we could be one of those teams that others are happy they won't be facing in the playoffs.

Kyle Williams said there is nothing really to learn. He can't understand all the talk about having to learn new schemes. They are hardly starting from scratch on defense, especially when most of the players are the same. Maybe a bit more of a learning curve for the offense, but it's not rocket science.

  17. What if they ran a qb by committee.? Think Taylor would be interesting as a red zone only qb. Let EJ and Castle fight for the #1 spot and let the Winner start. Or find a package of 20 plays each that play to their individual talents. It could be cutting edge to have EJ and Castle split snaps and then TT gets all the red zone snaps. I think TT could be really effective inside the 20s. He is super fast, and if he took 85% red zone snaps in practice he will be well prepared. Thoughts

We have 3 QB's that haven't justified being a starter in any way, to expect a committee to be effective is unrealistic, it's never been done before, it's hard enough to find one starter, let alone 2 or 3 that you expect to rely on. I said it earlier in this thread, the key to this team will still be our defense and it's ability to give the offense short fields to help it score. We still don't have a proven offensive line and that's where the focus needs to be offensively. If the line becomes effective, everything will fall into place very well. If not, defenses will have the advantage over us, regardless of our weapons.

  18. here's the thing.. if Roman can build a running attack that out-numbers the defense at the poa, then the defense will be forced to bring men up to neutralize that advantage. when this happens, Roman and his assistants must confirm that the opposing DC has his players keying on who Roman thought they would - and as the game unfolds - they must recognize how and when the DC changes who they're keying on instead. I think Roman is very much up to the task, and will be prepared to coordinate his offense at a level deeper than Marrone and Hackett could imagine. Roman will move defenders by formation and motion. he'll create situations where the defense must leave itself vulnerable.. where single 'key' defenders are put in a position of trying to defend two things at once, and thus.. can be optioned.

i'm thinking Roman's QBs will be well prepared to read this 'key', and choose to either throw to the receiver who's route takes him into the area Roman expects the 'key' defender will abandon - or to the receiver whose route takes him into the area Roman's 'key' defender is not defending because he either missed or chose not to act on the offensive 'key' Roman gave him. a passing game that can option coverage simplifies the QB's decision making.

it will all work off the running attack. we're going to be facing a lot of 4-2-5 and 3-3-5 nickel defenses employing 3 safeties, and if we're successful on the ground - at least one, and maybe two of those safeties will have to be brought up to make tackles after their LBs try to take out our blockers. this should create the aforementioned vulnerability in the secondary. one of our big problems last year was the fact that our running attack didn't demand that kind of attention. DCs were able to contain us in the secondary without sacrificing defenders to the los.

a heck of a lot is riding on our ability to consistently get more men playside than the defense is prepared for, and forcing to bring help. with that in mind, the additions of Clay and Felton cannot be applauded enough. Roman knows exactly what he wants to build, and he and Kromer know where we may be deficient. even if we don't break camp with the perfect player at each O-line position, they'll be given enough personnel to gameplan an advantage.

seeing the coaching staff, front office, and ownership all pulling in the same direction continues to be a real treat.. and although our current roster of QBs bring varying skills and experience to the job, i'm very confident that any of them will be able to execute what Roman draws up.

I'm excited about the idea of someone as qualified as Roman as OC, but you make it sound so simple and it's not. It's typical off season optimism , which is fine, but when you dismiss our poor line play and unsettled QB position you really drop the ball. Every team has coaches that know what they want, they need the personnel to make it happen and it's still a huge question mark that we have them.

And you really have no idea what defensive formations we will face, nobody does. You are just guessing.

I think there is more potential then last year, but I believe the positive impact of our offense will be helped by our defense in forcing turnovers/3 and outs and giving our offense some short fields to take advantage of.

Our team will be football at it's most basic. Run the ball and stop the run, and win the turnover battle.

  19. Special teams are not unimportant, but they are most definitely not "one third" of the game. If pressed I'd say about 10-15 percent.

They may not be 'one third' in the number of plays, but each special teams play probably has more impact on the overall game then many of the plays run from the offense/defense. Every FG attempt involves points, punts/kickoffs involve field position and most every play can be a huge momentum swing and impact then next few possessions. The impact of a downed punt at the one yard line early in the third quarter could impact field position for a few series much more than a 3 and out at the 30.
