Liberal Icon John Lennon was a closet Republican
Buftex replied to /dev/null's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Actually, George Harrison wrote and sang "Taxman". -
I can think of few people in music who have betrayed their talent as much as Rod Stewart. I must say, though, I love the Faces stuff, as well as his solo albums (essentially Faces albums) up through about 1976. I think he sounds great on the Beck stuff. Listen to that (youtube) track I posted, and just forget it is him...its' a great song...great performance. Ironically, I think he and Beck were made for each-other. I think they are both technically, very talented, but creativity, and artistry seems to evade them, at times. Beck has done some hideous stuff over the years...but I really liked that "Live at Ronnie Scott's" record he put out a couple of years ago. Rod hasn't done anything good in about 30 years... About a year ago, Ian McLagen came into the record shop I work at. He lives here in town. I was asking him about the rumored Faces reunion. He said, "yes we are going to do it...in some form or another...Ronnie and Kenny are up for it...I am up for it...not sure about Rod though. He said he still has nearly a century of music to murder" It was pretty funny...he was referencing those "Songbook" things Stewart has been doing the last 7 or 8 years...it is amazing how many people buy that **** up. So, anyways, the Faces reunion has happened, they are playing Europe this summer, with Mick Hucknell (from Simply Red) playing the part of Rod Stewart. Stewart has an "open invitation" to join them any time he wants...they got sick of waiting for him. It seems ludicrous for Hucknell to be singing with them, but the reviews I have read said he sounds great with them.

Yes, there was "Truth", and "Beckola"... "Truth" came out in 1968...great album...Stewart and Wood left to join the Small Faces, hijacking them from Steve Marriot, turning them into the Faces...would highly recommend "Truth". "Beckola" is good too, but not as good. Stand out track: "Morning Dew" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zb6WRqZRG-E&playnext=1&list=PLF9F70DA46D1B40E1

I thought about the Jeff Beck Group, first album with Rod Stewart and Ron Wood...
-
Wow, this is a tough one...I couldn't cull it down to 10...so I didn't repeat any artists (sorry to the Stones "Beggar's Banquet", Beatles "Revolver", Dylan's "Higway '61") and I still couldn't weed it down to just 10...lots of good choices by you all (props for the 13th Floor Elevators and Gene Clark/Gosdin picks! And am I the only person alive who HATES the Beach Boys!) Part of the reason, IMO, it is so hard to choose from the 60's, half the decade (maybe a little more) was chalked with some of the greatest singles of all time...and then there was a move toward whole albums...I kind of grew up on 45's, so I am very partial to things like the Ronettes, and lots of country stuff from that time...but often, those pop albums consisted of 5 great A-side singles, and then 7 tracks of filler...had to leave of Donovan, because his best album was a greatest hits..."Season of the Witch" and "Sunshine Superman" are kick ass singles, but his albums, on the whole, are pretty lightweight... Here goes my "top 10" or so: Beatles "Rubber Soul" The Byrds "Sweethearts of the Rodeo Ray Charles and Betty Carter Leonard Cohen "Songs Of Leonard Cohen" Sam Cooke "Night Beat" Dr John "Gris-Gris" Bob Dylan "Bringing It All Back Home" Fred Neal "Fred Neal" (re-issued as "Everybody's Talkin'") Rodriguez "Cold Fact" Rolling Stones "Let It Bleed" The Ronettes "Presenting the Fabulous..." Velvet Underground featuring Nico (is there any album as influential?)

NFL may implement full Thursday schedule in 2012
Buftex replied to Beerball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The only plus, for Thursday night games, as far as I am concerned, it gives the Bills a slightly better chance of being on national television...always fun, no matter how bad the team migh be. But, I think the NFL is already close to oversaturation. We will see. I know they still have killer ratings and all, but, once Thursday night games become a weekly thing, will the lustre be taken off? I have always felt, part of the reason the NFL has ruled supreme in the sports world, over the last 20 years or so, was that they put a premium on their product, as maddening as it seems at times...I don't like it. -
Believe it or not, you have been missed around here. I will say something dumb, just to lure you back!

I just started and finished watching Breaking Bad
Buftex replied to The Poojer's topic in Off the Wall Archives
I don't agree with your assessment of "Breaking Bad", but I do agree with your thoughts on "Dexter". I think part of what you are referring to, with Walter White, is that he is going through the process of "breaking bad". He has had deep buried rage in him from the begnning of the series (remember the scene where he tells off the bully in the clothing store, who were mimicking his son, or, the awesome scene, where he blows up the care of douche bag on the blue-tooth? Those were early on...). He has always had rage, but now, as his personal life has fallen to ****, he is getting all of his self-worth as a meth maker...and it makes him feel very powerful. As for "Dexter", I have always had some minor problems with it, but, the first two seasons were very good, if not great in my opinion. I wish the writers didn't feel the urge to tie up every loose end immediately...the tone of the series is a little too "comic book" for my tastes sometimes, but I thought the concept was great...handled with a little more realism, it would be excellent. I hated the 3rd, 4th and 5th seasons. Each one a little more than the last. I found Jimmy Smits' and John Lithgows character to be incredibly one dimensional dimensional. And the fifth season, just suffered from some really bad writing (IMO)...also found the cult leader to be laughably bad...kind of reminded me of Mel Kiper...I thought season 5 started out strong but just got bad. In fact, all the characters, except Dexter perhaps, are just so one dimensional, and cartoon like...it just gets a little old. The LaGuerrta stories are always silly...anyways, liking "Dexter" a little less every season. -
Terrell Owens...who will be interested now?
Buftex replied to Buftex's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That would probably have been me! I am still not pinning any hopes on him. Actually, though, TO is a lot older than Merriman. If the rumors are true, they are saying "best case" scenario, Owens could be ready to play again in late November...assuming the schedule isn't changed, that would mean he could, conceivably have about 4 to 5 games to get himself in shape for the playoffs...wouldn't Terrell Owens be a nice piece to add to your arsenal, if you were a playoff team? Problem is, playoff caliber teams don't seem to be interested in him...should be interesting. We know the guy keeps himself in shape, and I am doubting the drudgery of re-hab, even at 37 or 38, is not going to discouraging him from wanting to return. -

I Was In Desperate Need of Watching some Bills Football......
Buftex replied to sven233's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That was a great game...I have been watching the 1989 MNF game against the Rams, Reichs first start...his first "miracle"...my sleepy time viewing... Fun to go back and watch some of that stuff again. MNF was so much more exciting back in those days. -

Question about 70's Bills pre-season game
Buftex replied to Lord Chinfist's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
My first game was the first game ever played at Rich Stadium...August 17, 1973. Still have my ticket stub, and the inaugural coin they gave out. The Bills got beat, bad...preseason. I remember the first play of the game, Redskins returned the opening kick for a TD. Way to christen the new stadium! Hard to believe, that almost 40 years ago...I have been to about 115-120 games since...still have all my ticket stubs! Ironically, the only one I ever lost, was from a game in Houston, in 2006...the one where JP had the back to back 83 yard td passes to Evans, and then another, game winner, in the final seconds, to Peerless Price, as he just managed to get both feet down, in bounds...I had to buy a complete, unused ticket, from someone, on Ebay.... -

Comparing anyone to OC, in a negative way, is contemptible and reprehensible. If that is the case, did you ever stop to wonder why? Or, do you derive more pleasure from being an !@#$, than you do misery in having to defend yourself all the time? It seems like someone did a number on you, somewhere along the way...my contempt is turning to pity... -
JUST CANCEL THE DAMN SEASON ALREADY!

So, if they settle this thing, and no games are missed...what will have changed, for you, as a fan? Just relax... -
So, Spiller gets his old college number...I wonder if Leodis McKelvin knows this!

Agreed...disappointing...but an improvement...love the new helmet. Not crazy about the white/white thing....hey, it wouldn't be the Bills if they got everything right! Maybe in a few years, since they listen to the fans now, they will have a "blue pants" unveiling!

On top of the draft, and trade rumors, it (almost) is official, as of today...Sabres new AHL affiliate is the Rochester Americans!!! Peula approved as owner of the franchise, official announcement to come next week. http://www.pressherald.com/news/AHL-expected-to-OK-Sabres-transaction.html Portland Pirates had no problem letting the Sabres out of their agreement, as long as they could secure another NHL team to supply them with talent...that team, it appears, will be the Phoenix Coyotes! All is well that ends well. I am jonesing for football, but the new blood at HSBC has me pretty amped for hockey season as well...I can't wait to see what the Sabres do in free-agency...time to see if all the "the sole reason for existence of the Buffalo Sabres, is to win a Stanley Cup" talk is for real. I think it is...I am not going to overreact if they don't get Stamkos or somebody like that, I just want to see that they are making some agressive moves to improve, rather than to maintain the status quo...should be a fun summer, particularly if the lock-out ends soon!

You know, I love the original Apes flicks, especially the first 3...and the Burton "re-visioning" looked awesome, but it had such a wretched screen play. The "preview" here, for the new film (jeez it gives up a lot of the story!)has me a little nervous...it could be great, or real bad. Call me nuts, but I still love the Ape makeup from the original movies...these cgi apes, if done wrong, could make them too cuddly... a fine line... I hope it is good (I will see it first weekend, definitely!) but I am keeping my expectations low. If it is good, it could spawn a whole new series of films...

Strange...just reading up on Regehr...didn't realize that he is Brazillian. How many Brazillian NHL'ers have there been? It appears the rumors have some substance. I would like to see the deal made, as long as the Sabres don't give up too much...one rumor out of Calgary has Luke Adams going to the Flames. I would have some reservations about that. Adams is not a great skater, they say, but he has some puck handling skills, and is a big center. The Sabres do not have a plethora of great center prospects, from what I understand. Unless T-Pegs plans on going out and picking up a star center, I might want a little more for Adams. Oh well...Pegula has got me talking hockey in June! It has been a while since that has happened. btw- would love to have Briere back! Guy is money in the playoffs!

Buftex replied to The Poojer's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
My apologies, OC...you really didn't do anything, specifically, in this thread to provoke this...just your usual, delusional ("I am always right") nonsense...but there are times when people let their "true colors" show, and you had a doozy of a thread, a few years ago(when you were still "OCinPhilly"), which made me really wonder about some of the folks that hang out here...I am sure you remember your posting about your experiences with segregated education...it was some pretty offensive stuff. It really didn't have anything to do with left or right politics (the way most on TSW feel about liberals is well established here), but people, plain and simple. So, whenever I see you going on some sort of "victory tour", concerning how you called someone out, or how you "proved it" by simply saying something (offering no "proof" whatesoever) I can't help but recall the source. Oh yeah, it is that guy again...OC... -

I get a kick out the way you spew a bunch of BS, and then inform everyone that you just "proved it". Apparently, you feel like you had some back and forth argument with me about the military surge...you didn't...but I see, over and over again, your need to let everyone know you got them...enjoy your imaginary life... Think back to the days when you were just "OCinPhilly"... I think you are an ass...its' not up to me to prove a negative...see, I just proved it!
