Most people don't realize their are two purposes to the Second Amendment. The first is the protection of the absolute right of Americans to bear the arms of war. The second purpose, directly tied to the first, as Americans forming militias were expected to present themselves self armed with weapons of war: the Second Amendment protects the right of American citizens to form private armies in the event the government became tyrannical towards them and their liberties.
