  1. My dad crossed his legs - I think it's a tall guy thing.
  2. Newsweek has an interesting article focused on that pocket of wealth around Fairfield/Greenwich/etc CT. Apparently RICH people voted overwhelmingly to tax themselves. How about that.
  3. You know I have a roll of GOP TP. It has photos and logo on each sheet: Bush Wipes, Colin Wipes, Dick Wipes ... some guy in Denver designed it as I recall and he threw rolls of it at Bush's motorcade and ended up in jail. I saved my roll as it will be a collectors' item some day.
  4. No, it's one of those huge warehouse packages .... but it used to cost $13.
  5. That wasn't in the by-laws. I should know, I chaired the committee.
  6. As an officer I got to go to banquets in the entire Third Battalion, even better as a representative to the State Association I'd go to that too! When NYS raised the drinking age to 21, we had to raise our enrollment age because we did have beer at the firehall....shoot we had an old truck whose water tank was converted into a cooler so we could haul beer to parades. Ahhhhh those were the days. We saved the taxpayers big bucks (were rated on a professional scale although we were volunteer) and had a lot of fun doing it. We had a waiting list of a year, or more. Not now.
  7. After reading these posts I certainly understand why a woman would want to beat a man.
  8. Now THAT is really dangerous. When I was a firefighter (volunteer) and we happened to be at the firehouse for a meeting or work detail when an alarm came in, you could get SERIOUSLY killed rushing down the stairs to jump onto the truck. Those were the days.
  9. My husband considers Rush an "entertainer" - he listens occasionally because it cracks him up. He's smart enough not to take the rants literally. The problem is that the same class of ijits who are rushing to buy up all the guns, who think Obama's a Muslim etc etc....listen to that crap and believe it. I just find it interesting that the same group who stifled all objections to the administration's activities right after 9/11 in the name of "security" and "patriotism", at this time when we are teetering on the edge of ruin are in effect yelling "fire!" in a crowded theatre...I guess since only nutjobs take it seriously, it's ok, but it only takes ONE nutjob to upset what's left of the apple cart.
  10. I hate to break it to you, but Obama IS NOT THE PRESIDENT. What you should be asking here is WHAT IS GEORGE W. BUSH DOING?! Pretty funny how everyone, including BUSH, is expecting Obama to take over now. Under ordinary circumstances you'd be screaming that he had some nerve shoving Bush aside before he's in office. Unfortunately for us all, Bush is still "in charge", whatever THAT means.
  11. Scribo, if you want to organize a protest, then by all means do so. It is your right as an American. Unlike the Republicans of yore, who sought to surpress and cover up dissent, I believe your voice should be heard. In fact, if you read today's op-ed on CNN from Dr. Frist - he acknowledges the GOP's mistake in refusing to have conversations with those who disagree. Personally, I think your opinion is way off base, but what the heck. As long as you express yourself non-violently, go for it. It is your right.
  12. We don't eat that much meat and I'm pretty good at using leftovers...fortunately my husband and daughter are not that fussy about what they eat. Their mantra is "if I don't have to cook it, then I can't complain". I have started making more stuff at home, like pasta, bread and even ice cream. I can get 1/2 gal of heavy cream for $4 and that churns out a lot of ice cream as opposed to paying $3-5 a pint for stuff in the store. The best buys are in things like dried peas, bean, rice etc. You can make some pretty tasty and healthy stuff from those, but a lot of people find the thought daunting. It's pretty simple as long as you don't forget to soak the beans overnight the night before.... I paid $20 for toilet paper yesterday! Yowzaa! And $22 for not-so-good olive oil, that has SHOT up. Living in Seattle we're used to plentiful fish, but that has gone way up too. Dungeness crab is local so it's still reasonable, I can get a 1.5-pound crab for $7. I didn't buy one - my brother has crab pots and I'm gonna mooch a crab or two from him.
  13. Speaking of labor unions - most of you probably know that the Boeing strike is over. The union got a good deal, with progressive raises and guarantees on job retention in the U.S. Therefore I LOVED it this morning when I saw a full-page ad, directed to those union members, in today's paper. Apparently there are a handful (12, or 21, I can't remember) of members of their union who work at a local Ford dealer. These union member supported the Boeing strikers and are now challenging them to start buying Fords AND having their automobiles serviced at that dealership. Interesting. And good for them. Let's see if their 'brethren' support them.
  14. I seriously wonder how families are surviving these days. I just went to Costco and cannot believe the prices. We only shop there once a month; we buy our meat and produce somewhere else. But I noted that toilet paper is up $3; olive oil $5; bread, $1.50 ... etc. These aren't luxuries - I didn't even look at those. Thinking of people with a couple of kids who make even $50-60k per year, that can't go far. Gas was $2.29 a gallon at least. What is everyone else seeing?
  15. I drive around Seattle in my red truck plastered with Bills magnets, antenna ball etc...secure in the knowledge that no-one here will laugh at me because the Seahawks, Huskies, Cougars, and Mariners all suck...and the Sonics are gone (they still suck though). It's just a game. I see a lot of promise for the Bills and I am not ready to give up on them. I sat in the stands with the flakes in 1985-85, bought season tickets in 1986 and still have them. If that's a fan, I am a fan. The only difference is that I don't feel like slitting my wrists on Mondays any more.
  16. John McCain would not consciously do anything that would cause Barack Obama's death. McCain ran a stupid campaign and made a very poor choice in his VP selection. I don't think he realized what he'd done until it was too late, but he was blinded by his desperation to win - this was his last shot, and he pulled out all the stops (including good judgement) to take it. That said, Sarah Palin is a divisive personality who appeals to the worst in a class of people who are ignorant, shallow and afraid. I caution people againt thinking she is STUPID - she is not. She is probably quite bright, but woefully ignorant. Her looks and ability to throw words (it takes awhile to figure out what she's trying to say, by then it's too late) have gotten her pretty far considering there is no substance to her. I don't see the Christian right abandoning her. She's just what they like - a woman who looks like a Barbie doll, talks like a fiery preacher yet still knows "her place". they'll see if they can't groom her over the next few years or maybe they'll just find someone younger, better looking and a little more educated. We haven't seen the last of Caribou Barbie.
  17. If the Republican party clings to her, they'll get whupped again next election. Her novelty has worn off. She does not appeal to normal people, only radical right-wing nutjobs. if she were a man, people would have written her off after two weeks, and been a LOT harder on her. Fortunately for America the people who really think she's the future of the Republican party are a loud, but numerically very small, minority. The real Republicans are starting to wake up and I hope they retake their party soon. We need rational people who can contribute to building something instead of relying upon tearing it down. Here's wishing the official Republican Hate Machine a swift and painful death.
  18. Upon further review, I do think some of you are paranoid and crazy.
  19. I read an article stating that the record turnout for this election was most Democrats, or people voting Democratic. The GOP did not turn out the vote. I am sure they are busy slicing and dicing this, but the impression I'd get is that people couldn't stomach the GOP ticket but wouldn't vote for a Democrat, so they stayed home. Whether Palin was a factor is hard to say, but I have talked to moderate Republicans who did vote for McCain and they described it as "I held my nose and voted for him, praying for his excellent health should he actually win." That's not scientific of course.
  20. Terrible dilemma - there are about 5 million jobs that would go kaput if GM got what it deserved (nothing). Personally I would not be sad to see this dumbass dinosauer of a company bite the dust but I would have a problem with all the workers going with it. They work hard and it's not their fault that management is slow, stupid, greedy and out of touch. I would hope there would be some sort of solution that would let GM hang in there while making a transition to new technology. That would keep many of the existing jobs and create new ones as the migration takes place. But it's going to be slow, and painful.
  21. I think the idiots are the people who are panicking over nothing. On the list of the "top 5 priorities" for this administration there was NO mention of stupid guns. I say, go for it gun nuts. If it makes you happy, buy 'em all up. I grew up with guns. None of us ever shot anyone or much of anything for that matter unless you count clay pigeons and targets.
  22. So let me get this straight: yesterday the Republican Gov of CA announced he may need to raise taxes and now the Republican mayor of NYC is going to do it. I'm confused. I thought that it was Democrats who tax and spend?! Has the world gone topsy-turvy? Or perhaps was I mislead?!
  23. Hey as long as they're using cash, not credit, more power to them. They are boosting the economy by injecting cash...then they'll take their guns and hole up in their homes, away from the rest of society. Good for them. It's too bad they are so frightened, it's not a good way to live, but maybe they will feel safer with their guns. I certainly hope they don't get itchy trigger fingers and shoot Girl Scouts and stuff when they come to the door but...they have the right to arm themselves to the teeth. Much good may it do them.
  24. I read an article in the morning paper today where a McCain aide stated that Palin didn't even realize Africa was a continent. She thought it was a country. And apparently the rest of her civics "knowledge" was just as shocking. At least to that aide. I betcha a good 40% of Americans are just as ignorant - so Palin's assertion that she stood for "everyman" may have been accurate. I am not vouching for the veracity of the statement by the McCain aide. Perhaps it's just all sour grapes. But given some of the stupidity we see in the world today, it could well be accurate.
  25. I think it's funny. But since the comment was about Obama, his is the only opinion that matters. I sense he has other really important things to consider.
