My opinion of Obama has gone up quite a bit....
blzrul replied to Fingon's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Like? Ending the war? Providing healthcare? Improving education? Methinks McCain promised the same thing. What differed is how they got there. -
OR when they have two sons assassinated because of their politics and another killed in war fighting for his country...then the Bushes will cease to be wannabes paying lip service to being patriotic Americans.

Ill. Governor arrested on corruption charges
blzrul replied to stuckincincy's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Wow! It's still breaking news but, if true....this guy and Spitzer can start a club for stupid governors. Why would anyone think they could get away with something like this? Ouch. But, yes, my first thought was "Chicago politics as usual." Double-ouch. -

The only idiots who thought Obama was a rabid leftist were the wingnuts. Most of Obama's supporters were NOT left. do you really think that there are that many million leftists in America? Of course not! I am perfectly happy with Obama so far. He's cool, he's smart, and he inspires confidence. He's a leader we don't need to be ashamed of. He has a good moral compass and I think he will put his country first, unlike the morons who are going to slink out of DC under cover of darkness in 43 days. But then again who's counting. -
Actually no. I think the Bushes are wannabes. They WANT to be considered America's "royal" family. But they're not. They WANT to be beloved. But they're not. They have the compound in New England. They have TWO "Presidents" in the family. But still, alas, they fall short. The Bushes will be remembered for puking on the Japanese PM...for "read my lips" .... for "Mission Accomplished", for several recessions and 2/3 of their wars were a bust...whether it's fair or not. No matter what, the Bushes will ALWAYS be a joke. It may not be fair, but there it is. They're even grooming George P and calling him "the answer to John John"...and he ain't. He's a wannabe. He's a Bush.

State of Illinois boycotting Bank of America
blzrul replied to Hazed and Amuzed's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I don't know if there was a policy in place, or a state law, that dictates the severance. The workers are most upset that the company CONCEALED their intent to close from them and then literally pulled the rug out from under them with 3 days' notice. The workers' claims should be included with the creditors' .... and if this were a Christian country, one would want to see those claims at the TOP of the list, and not the bottom of the list. Regarding BofA - I think the issue here is that the company said it's the Bank who froze them, therefore making it impossible to honor their commitment...this somewhat implies that they're acknowleding a commitment. -

I thought it was a state requirement .... in any event, employers do have to notify the govt (usually the state labor / workforce agency) depending on the # employees. That's why sometimes companies will lay off in smaller waves, so they are under the radar. -
And don't forget the older children. At this time of year all the focus is on little kids, and they ARE fun to buy for. But many families have teen kids and they often go without because they're harder to buy for, or their stuff is more expensive.
-
Maybe but I think a shiny, new toy means a lot to a child. It doesn't have to be a Wii. Someone very close to me was "working poor" to where he qualified for hang his kids' wishes on an Angel Tree. The girl got a new doll, and the boy got a new toy truck. It meant the world to them. The Salvation Army and others will take gently used toys.

So you wasted your time listening to a moron. Extremists on BOTH sides are not worth paying any attention to.
-
Postscript: Overstock.com has a section where you can purchaes Toys for Tots online at special prices. I think shipping's free too. Now I know what to do with all that money I was saving for playoff tickets. UGH.
-
Probably so. But I think most people are realists who understand we didn't get to this state overnight and we won't get out of it quickly either.
-
This is not the first time he's made the statement. I understand we look to him for optimism but then again we'd think he was a moron if he kept up with the Mary Poppins stuff at a time when 1/2 millions jobs are lost in one month. That's somewhat akin to making statements about showering our soldiers with flowers, etc. Just pure dumb. Obama has said that it's going to be tough going for awhile, but he has a plan and if we pull together as only America can, things will get better. That's the truth. Would you rather be treated like an adult, with the truth, or lied to? Anyone who thinks that they can kick back and let one man "fix" things is probably not in touch with reality,

I read an article this morning that Toys for Tots (USMC program you know) is really hurting badly. The warehouse here in Seattle is virtually empty, at this time of year. There are many people hurting, and it'll probably get worse, but a toy for a kid is something we can all afford. Doesn't have to be a wii...even a coloring book and a big freaking box of crayons (I remember how AWESOME it was as a little kid to get that huge box of 100 Crayolas....ieatcrayonz will probably agree).... I'm gonna send a super-duper rocket-launching ninja GIJoe in memory of BiB. Or maybe just some tinker toys. Tis the season.

I think there is already a thread on this topic elsewhere so SDS, please close this one.

To the extent that being a representative involves being smart, principled (technically, it's true but often sadly untrue in reality), and able to negotiate and work well with others - she's qualified. And she's smart, she can learn. Just because Kennedy has been reluctant to be involved in politics does not mean she doesn't have an understanding of the issues, a desire to do right by her constituents and the ability to come up to speed quickly. Of the people I know in Congress, they were all "green" at some point. I think she'd do well. I think it'll be her or a Cuomo, and NYS could do worse. It's interesting that people are doggin Obama for selecting cabinet members who are veterans of the system...yet they're nervous about a Senator who is (arguably) not a Washington insider....can't have it both ways.

Massive Infrastructure Project
blzrul replied to molson_golden2002's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I had wondered if perhaps taking some of the bazillions that the current people are wasting (did you see one bank that got $$$ lost $9b IN ONE MONTH after they'd received the bailout?!) might help but...I see the same problem as the "tax rebates" earlier this year, that people are using it to pay down debt. So a rebate wouldn't help unless it was new spending. I don't see any other way out of this mess. There are very real economic issues, no doubt about it, and we need to address those as well as the collective [emotional] depression that hangs over a bad economy. If people have work, and if they are optimistic about light at the end of the tunnel, we may all be able to pull through this. I am also a fiscal conservative and am VERY irritated about all the spending but I would rather see it spent on something that more directly benefits the average American. On the tax credit thing for an American car...I don't know. I ran to a Chrysler dealer in 1985 wavin my American flag, proud to buy American. The car was a piece of junk and when I unloaded it 4 years later it wasn't work squat. In 1998 I tried again, this time with Ford. My experiences are shared on the Consumer Forum. Meanwhile my 1997 Civic, made in America, still chugs along at 130k miles with very low maintenance costs. I think companies who bring jobs BACK to America should get an incentive, or companies who do not outsource. You have to look at all this as if it were a family - if a family is faced with a crisis, where failure is really not an option because of the dire consequences...you do whatever you have to. Beg, borrow, steal, work 4 jobs, etc. Or in the case of the government, spend. It sucks, but I think it has to be done. Governments will always spend anyway - it's spending WISELY that I'd like to see more of. -
So the wingnuts around here really had a problem with John Edwards paying $400 of his own earned money for a haircut. I wonder how you all feel about Sarah Palin using your political donations for $150,000 worth of clothes and $30k+ for makeup and hairstyling? I think there is a thread on hypocrisy here somewhere, maybe I should ask this question there.

The intolerant bigotry of the liberal left
blzrul replied to stuckincincy's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I don't know that it makes you a hypocrite. I had lunch with my brother today. He's a wingnut. We were all talking during lunch about getting laid off etc. I mentioned that he had had a good deal when he was laid off last time, because he got free college training. I thought it was the union. Turns out it was a government program. So here's a guy that pisses and moans over paying taxes (then goes to college thanks to the taxpayers) and of course he has good healthcare, pension and salary thanks to the union he belongs to. Sure looks like hypocrisy to me but he'd be shocked if I said that. I think he needs a kick in the butt - but I wouldn't call him a hypocrite. At least not an intentional hypocrite. -
Reading through this crap it's hard to disagree that religion is a pain in the ass. I've always said, if it gives people comfort, great. Just enjoy your personal comfort and let me enjoy mine in my own way. These days people of various religions, and people of no religion, are hell-bent to shove THEIR beliefs down others' throats. It is pretty funny that people freak out when someone objects to a Christmas tree...then the same people freak out over a stupid sign. Why can't they just ignore the stupid sign? And the tree? Why are these things all such a big deal. Go live someplace where you don't know when you'll get your next meal. You might find the perspective helpful

You know, working at home is great. I can sit here, download data, drink wine, and spit it all over my keyboard while reading your posts. I sure miss Paul.

Yes, it's far better to have a heritage rooted in Jewish slavery for Nazis and the deaths of over 500,000 Iraqis. Far better. Something to be proud of. Not to mention between them all 3 recessions, 2m+ jobs lost. And etc. I'm not excusing Kennedy. He has had to live with that. But he's only one. Two others gave their lives for this country, plus Joe in WWII. Unless you are as seriously !@#$ed up as you seem to be, you cannot believe that the Bushes have had a positive impact on America to such an extend we'd want another one as president.
-
You could do that. Then again, you could celebrate the fact that at 5 pm EST the worst of them are gone. I am on PDT and am still working - I work from home, meaning work never ends - so I will pretty much always be here to be the standard bearer for the left. :-)
