Whaley admits what we've suspected - Bills in QB Purgatory
QCity replied to IronyAbounds's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
No, I'm criticizing the overall relaxed approach to getting QB. If you want to break it down to a specific year and draft round, it's probably just going to wind up being a 10 page argument about EJ, although that's probably inevitable at this point. We're going to have to disagree about EJ looking competent after that first year as well. Don't bother posting his stats, I've seen them a thousand times already. You asked me what my plan would have been. I told you I would have liked to see a more aggressive approach to the QB position. Maybe you agree with that or maybe you don't. Either way, do you honestly feel this team has taken aggressive approach to getting a QB over the last 3 years? -
Whaley admits what we've suspected - Bills in QB Purgatory
QCity replied to IronyAbounds's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It's only contradictory if you believe all street QBs are created equal. Orton was serviceable. He commanded a ~$5.5M salary. He was a bandaid. QBs like Palmer and Leinart are complete Hail Marys and moves like that deserve to be mocked. But again, I'm criticizing the circumstances that lead up to making these moves. Obviously you take a more aggressive approach to drafting a QB. Do you want specifics? That's a slippery slope. Do you want to hear "draft Beckham and trade back into the 1st for Bridgewater" again? Instead, how about I give you an example of a franchise that takes an aggressive approach to the QB position? Our dear friends, the Patriots. They have one of the greatest QBs to ever play the game, and yet, year in and year out, they draft more QBs. Not always late round picks either, mind you. We are talking 2nd (Garoppolo) and 3rd round picks (Mallet, O'Connell). This is not from a team that has a question mark at the position - they already have a HOF QB! It's an organization that clearly understands the value of the position and acts accordingly. By comparison we are like the timid kid that sits in the back of the class and is afraid to raise his hand. This franchise is allergic to drafting QBs. (and no, this doesn't mean we should draft a QB in the 1st round every year) -

It was a good idea. I liked Orton. But if the bar is set so low that a 12 game stint from a journeyman QB is lauded as some sort of success, then I don't really know what else to say. My criticism is directed more at the circumstances that lead up to having to make these late August desperation moves year after year. There's more than a few people here that think Kyle Orton is the Antichrist - that's why I said I'm looking forward to the reactions. -

Every year we bring in some garbage QB out of desperation and there's always a half dozen threads about it and how it could work out for us. It's practically an annual tradition at this point (example). If you need more enlightenment, feel free to search the archives for names like "Leinart" and "Vince Young." I look forward to reading the responses to this. -

Hah, I can picture him saying that. Maybe at the end of camp he'll bring in Jordan Palmer or Matt Leinart again. I always love listening to the reasons why that's a good idea and that nothing is wrong and everything is completely fine. -
Would you, right now, trade EJ for Tannehill? Chapter 3
QCity replied to FireChan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Look, Tannehill was already guaranteed ~$18M over 2015 and 2016 from his rookie deal. Yes, that was before the new contract. They upped that figure and now he's guaranteed $25M over the next two years ($21.5M guaranteed plus a 2016 trigger of $3.5M). That's it. Basically $12.5M a year for two years. After that it becomes a yearly deal they can walk away from. If he makes the leap and becomes a top-10 QB, everyone in their front office will be thrilled to pay him the rest of that big contract. If he flames out after 2 years, they can cut bait and escape cleanly. The new contract is simply a modern day "prove-it" type deal molded in the shape of Dalton and Kaepernick's contracts. They are only paying him ~$7M more than they were already going to have to pay him anyway, and now they control his future. If you think this contract is a huge burden on their payroll, you are a bit uninformed. -

After watching our QB's over the last decade I feel like I'm in purgatory. -

Free Windows 10 Upgrade Beginning 7/29: Who's in?
QCity replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in Off the Wall Archives
There have been a lot of privacy concerns with Windows 10 surfacing in the last 48 hrs. It's supposedly a lot more intrusive than previous operating systems. Might want to look into that before you upgrade if that kind of thing concerns you. -
Ted Black out: Russ Brandon to head Sabres and Bills
QCity replied to JP's Voice's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Russ traded wins for cash, and you've talked yourself into thinking it was a good thing? We sold a freaking home game. We became the laughingstock of the league - a dysfunctional organization that was the punchline to jokes across the nation. Free agents perceived us as a team that was committed to profits over success on the field (and who could blame them). Russ managed to take an unattractive destination for free agents, and somehow, someway, he made it even more undesirable to play here. Good luck trying to calculate the lost opportunity cost of that, best to probably ignore it, huh? What about all the fan anguish and uneasiness it generated locally? Do we have any figures or metrics that show how negatively this idea hurt local ticket sales? I don't recall RB ever releasing that data. Bah, who cares about that anyway, I'm sure that 11% - 20% bump in Canadian sales easily replaced the disenchanted locals. So, yeah, it was pretty much the worst marketing decision in the history of this franchise (even worse than the Whammy Weenie). Aside from buying the team, the two greatest things the Pegula's have done so far are 1) cancelling that abortion of a series and 2) completely marginalizing Brandon's duties. And yes, he has been marginalized. A president that doesn't have the coach or GM reporting to him is a president in name only - it's an empty title. His value at OBD was so cherished that Terry basically said, "Hey, why don't you just split time downtown? You can be 'president' over there too." It's not like the Sabres need help, they just played their worst two seasons in franchise history back-to-back and they still sellout every game with 96% season ticket holder retention. Anyways, this is truly a win-win situation. Russ gets to play "president," and we don't have to worry about him hiring any future coaches or GMs. I look forward to his updates on the facilities at St John Fisher, any new additions to the Sabres' locker room, and how Dinosaur Bar-B-Que is coming along. Huzzah. -

We've reached the point where we're now lauding RB for the Toronto series? I definitely feel like I've landed in Jonestown. -

QCity replied to JP's Voice's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I've been very pleased with how isolated Russ has been from football operations since Rex came on board. He's not much more than a glorified marketing exec at this point, and if he wants to do that with the Sabres, that's fine by me. -
Truly a sad day, he had such an iconic voice that embodied the team. It always felt energizing walking through the parking lot on game day hearing his voice blaring from hundreds of radios.

"How a rookie HC derailed a rookie QB"/All-22 of EJ Manuel
QCity replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm sorry but that article is just terrible. If you ever need a textbook example of cherry picking, bookmark that sucker. It's a classic case of forming an agenda first (laud EJ; disparage Marrone), and then attempt to manipulate and contort data until you can fool someone into believing said agenda has merit. By the end of that atrocity I fully expected the author to attempt to statistically blame Marrone for the Clinton prison escape. That piece is the product of a man with no statistical background, a rudimentary grasp of algebra, and way, way, way too much offseason Kool-Aid. It's also what happens when you delve too deep into the numbers and don't watch the actual games (he does have a future in politics however) -

Just got a call on my cell....I guess im going to jail
QCity replied to John from Riverside's topic in Off the Wall Archives
The IRS doesn't initiate contact by phone, it's almost always by certified mail or in person. When you file for bankruptcy, get a lien or a judgement it goes on your public record - for everyone (including the scammers) to see. You'll probably be getting a ton of junk mail from tax attorneys in the next few months. -
Bills OL coach Aaron Kromer arrested (Suspended 6 games)

Just because he was arrested at 1AM doesn't mean this incident occurred after dark, and I highly suspect it didn't. Most people don't fish at night. -

I thought bringing back Sekera made a lot of sense for our L-handed defenseman needs. Just fell out of my chair when I heard he got a $33M deal. -
