EJ's Florida Game Lucky for Bills?
Wayne Cubed replied to Last Guy on the Bench's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That's pretty much what I've gotten from this thread. Also, high school recruiting is equivalent to professional college scouting. -
I'm not saying that EJ Manual should start right out of the gate, but if you recall the same things were being said about Ryan Tannehill last year. That he should sit a year behind Matt Moore, learn the game etc. Here's what Greg Cosell had to say about Tannehill pre draft: "Tannehill was very good when improvising within structure. When the pressure forced him to abandon the boxing ring, he did, but the objective was again to find a quieter area to deliver the ball rather than to run" - Sounds a bit like Manual, who is also great outside the pocket. "He did not drive the ball as well against Texas as he had in the earlier games. He missed some throws that were there; overall, his ball location was inconsistent." "Tannehill at times did not do a good job of verifying the positioning of the safeties after the snap of the ball. That led to some poor reads and ill-advised throws." "Overall, I did not necessarily see the kind of improvement over time I would have liked. Tannehill possesses the skill set to be a quality NFL starter. At this point, he would be best in a quick-rhythm, short-to-intermediate passing game that featured play-action and boot-action passes." So to summarize, Tannehill was not nearly as polished as some would like coming out of college. Yet, he went #8 overall based on need alone, IMO. Now after posting what I would consider very average stats this year ( 12 TD's; 13 INTs; threw for 3,294 yards) is considered the 2nd best QB in the AFCE and by some, a very good QB. Personally, I think Manual could more than replicate Tannehill's numbers and success this year.

We should have taken Nassib in the 4th
Wayne Cubed replied to Webster Guy's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
To add to this a bit, all indications were Marrone wanted the Bills scouting department to assess Nassib without his influence. Have someone not close or emotionally invested in him take a look. Marrone wasn't there for his Syracuse workout and didn't attend his pre-draft visit(maybe he had seen everything he needed to see while he was his coach at SU). Then once the scouting department had done all their work, the Bills collectively could look through the reports and decide. That's not a knock against Nassib, but the Bills collectively decide Manuel was the better choice, regardless of what Marrone thought of Nassib's talents. Just because Marrone may have thought Nassib to be an all-star, all-pro, hall of fame QB, doesn't mean it was accurate. Yes, Marrone should be able to assess talent, but assessing talent at the college level, IMO, is completely different than at the pro level. Not to mention, tying his wagon to Nassib, could have potentially ruined his pro HC'ing career. -
We should have taken Nassib in the 4th
Wayne Cubed replied to Webster Guy's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Taking Nassib in the 4th is all hindsight. To really maximise their efforts, the Bills should have taken Nassib in the 2nd round. THE SECOND ROUND. Who's Robert Woods anyways, at the time their was no guarantee Nassib would last past the 2nd and all these analysts had him rated really high. I'm pissed, the 41st pick came up and the Bills didn't pick him. The right call was to take Nassib in the 2nd, it's all about getting your franchise QB and not risking it. Yea the Bills may have been laughed at but it shouldn't have stopped there. No, no, no. The Jets are bringing in 5 QBs to compete. Therefore with their 2nd second round pick, the Bills should have picked Barkley. The Redskins picked 2 QBs last year, well the Bills are going to one up them and pick 3. Barkley was rated high on many analysts boards. It should have been may the best man win. -
Rd 1, Pick #16: QB EJ Manuel - Florida St.

Reminds me of another QB who is great outside the pocket... I think he signed a massive deal, biggest one ever. Some guy named Rodgers. -
Whoa, new avatar. And I agree.

Rd 3, Pick #78: WR Marquise Goodwin - Texas

Goodwin looks fast. Real fast. That go route he just blew by Wreh-Wilson. -
Rd 5, Pick #143: S Jonathan Meeks - Clemson

This has absolutely nothing to do with Byrd. It's a 5th round player. It's depth and a special teams player. The Bills cut their 5th round pick last year... -
Ryan Nassib - QB - Syracuse

Well, apparently he is viewed as a backup QB. -
Rd 4, Pick #105: S Duke Williams - Nevada

Great pick. Looks like the only reason he dropped to the 4th round is because of some off the field issues. -
Ryan Nassib - QB - Syracuse
Wayne Cubed replied to BuffaloBillsForever's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yes, but as far as Nassib is concerned, Marrone specifically, distanced himself from the scouting of Nassib. He wasn't even around when Nassib came to OBD. And this could be because he knew he had a weighted opinion of Nassib and didn't want to cloud the Bills judgement. He let them make their own evaluation, and then as a collective, the Bills determined that Manuel was the choice. Not to mention not wanting to tie your entire career and talent evaluation to one guy. Yes, the media was all over making the connection. But when isn't the media quick to make the wrong assessment. A team will still select him regardless of what the Bills and Marrone think. -

You mean like Peyton Manning who went 0-4 against Florida. -

I like the pick. EJ Manuel was the QB I knew the least about, but I knew he had the most upside of any of the QB's in the draft. I like his size and his athleticism. In a draft where all the top QB's are equal I'm glad the Bills swung for the fence instead of trying to play it safe. Not to mention they picked up 2 extra picks in the process. -

Gotta love the hindsight going on in this thread... Here's a thought, if teams knew JJ Watt would be as good as he is, he wouldn't have made it to the Locker/Gabbert pick. So there's that. -

More importantly he add's to the list of "J's" on the team. EJ, CJ, TJ, SJ13 -

This, I witnessed the Stanford/USC 3-OT game. Never was a fan of Barkely before the game. He changed my mind in that game. The kid has talent.

Per Ian Rapoport: Bills like Barkley in 2nd round
Wayne Cubed replied to Ramius's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Many times? What's many times? And I didn't realize playing in snow in High School, translates to playing in crap conditions in the NFL. High school season's are roughly 8-game seasons... Maybe 2 of those were snow for Nassib... So if he started all 4 years in High School, maybe he played in 8? maybe...
