  1. What are you saying... Campbell can throw a 3 yard checkdown and lay on his back better than Edwards? Interesting how people can make excuses for Campbell's situation and dismiss Edwards when HIS situation (coaches, coordinators) was far worse. I mean....Doughboy was our OC last year!!!!! My god man!!!

Edwards situation wasn't worse. He had the same head coach his entire career. Incompetent HC, but the same HC. Campbell has had three head coaches, and several offensive coordinators too. And Campbell has thrown for far more yards than Trent in their careers with similar adversities. Why is that?

  2. My buddy who works in the athletic program at Cuse says the Bills always had scouts watching him hard. On the field, he is a first round talent. Off it, he is undraftable.

If he was sitting there in the 5th, I'd gamble on him. playing at home could be the best or worst thing for him.

He'll be long gone by the 5th round. Some other team will gamble bigger because he does haves first round talent. Late 2nd or early 3rd is my prediction.

  3. He is the African American version of JP Losman. Stats lie. he fumbles too much, takes horrible sacks, no ability to scramble properly, and a 2 cent brain.

To top it off, Campbell actually has WR's and TE's who know what a hash mark is and how to cross on a pattern.

No way. LoL. He does fumble. That can be rectified with a decent O-line. So can the sacks. I saw him start to throw the ball away last year too though, instead of taking those sacks. But the truth is, any QB trying to make a play is going to take sacks. I don' t know if he has a 2 cent brain either. I think the various coaches and coordinators he's been under have something to do with it. If they can get him for a low draft pick no reason not to. He would be better than any QB they could take in the low rounds for the foreseeable future.

I understand folks not being high on Campbell. But I would say when a team is in the position that the Bills are in they need to think outside the box. Sometimes a guy needs a fresh start and better coaching. I don't think you can say Campbell isn't tougher than Trent. I don't think you can say he doesn't have a stronger arm than Trent or Fitz. Does their stats lie or are they as terrible as it looks? And as bad you say Campbell is he's put up more yards and TD's than either of them and played more games. I will take a QB with 3600 yards and 20 TD's in my lineup until I can find one who can put up 4000. Which could be Campbell if he gets protection.

  4. Won't happen. Gailey has been fired enough times to realize that coaching gigs can be fleeting and he'll want to bring in his own guy through the draft to develop this year. He can't afford to wait. I think it's a lock that the Bills trade up into the late 1st, early second to land Colt McCoy or Tim Tebow (most likely Tebow).

McCoy's arm is not the "Buffalo" arm Nix described in his first interviews. Tebow, I'm not sold on either. I'm still not sure about that throwing motion or that all of his running skills translates to the NFL. If the Bills were more solid across the board then I wouldn't mind Tebow, but to me, in their current state, if the Bills take a guy in the first or second this year he better be starting or playing a lot. Is that Tebow?

  5. Exactly (although, in fairness our secondary looks set after all of the investments made there during the old regime).

Gotta trade down when you have this many holes.

Agreed. That's IF the opportunity presents itself. Depends on how the top of the draft goes. Who is there at 9 someone wants badly enough and believes Jacksonville, Denver or Miami would take before them?

  6. The Redskins now have what, 1 pick in the top 100? They'll be dying to slide down a few spots if they can add a pick or two. And we're in desperate need of an elite LT. Okung should be available at 4, but he'll be long gone by 9. Peter King opines that both Okung and Bulaga will go in the top 5, and I'm of the view that Trent Williams will be gone by 8.

I know, I know, this front office values draft picks too much, and we never trade up in Round 1. Ever.

But we need to at least try to make this happen. The question is, can we move up from 9 to 4 without losing our second round pick? Perhaps, but it may involve sending a player or two in the process... which I'm fine with, if it means we get a blue chip player.

I am just terrified that Nix & Co. will sit tight at the 9 spot and be stuck with a choice of Anthony Davis or a non-need position.

    Thoughts?

No. If you trade up to #2 you take that LT. Bigger value and impact position for the money.

  7. His stats are better than he is. I'd rather have TE who throws three yd passes all game long, but might give you a fighting chance in the final drive, than Jason Campbell who shines when the game is out of reach and sucks when it's on the line.

I live in VA where Redskin talk dominates the airwaves and most Redskin fans wanted Todd Collins to start b/c his stretch when Campbell was injured was the best stretch the Redskins have had during Campbell's time there.

Dude, your stats are what you are. He didn't throw for over 3G's and 20 TD's because he has no arm or talent. It's not like he was working with Jerry Rice or the 90's Dallas O-line. He's got potential. He's got an arm, he's tough. And he was in a similar circumstance to Edwards and Fitz and still managed to do better than them.

And I'm from B-Lo, but moved to DC as a kid. I KNOW you aren't sitting here telling us you are going by what Redskins fans say. LoL. Come on, man... They are the most unreasonable fans I have come across anywhere.

  8. I feel the same way. I would take Campbell for a 5th in a second and let him come in as the 4th QB and compete for the starting job. Certainly not the long term QB answer, but decent stop-gap while we take the time to straighten the lines out.

No. If they don't believe he can do the job for the long term then don't waste the pick it might take to get him. Don't need stop gaps. They already have stop gaps. Need guys with enough physical talent to compete to be the guy. Campbell has more prototypical physical dynamics than any QB on the roster. And toughness. And it would allow the Bills to focus on the lines in the draft as opposed to adding QB to the mix. I'm not saying he's the second coming. I am saying he has some redeeming qualities: young, prototypical size, strong arm, something to prove, toughness that might blossom into more than what he's been under the right circumstances. The right circumstances: a consistent offensive system that plays to his strengths, and an O-line. I believe Gailey can provide the system (he has a good track record with QB's) and Nix will handle the O-line.

I think any of us would have loved to have Campbell's stats behind center last season and those stats were behind a terrible line without a dominant downfield receiving option or a consistent running attack. He had a similar situation to Edwards and Fitz and did better than both of them. He's also improved every year even though he's played under different coordinators and head coaches constantly since being drafted. For a 4th or later or a conditional pick in 2011 as opposed to this April, why not? He knows what the pro games is about; knows how to prepare unlike a draft pick at the QB position. He has a better chance of contributing at the QB position immediately compared to a draft pick. And we know the Bills could use immediate contributions. In a competition I believe he beats out Edwards and Fitz hands down.

  9. With the Redskins offically out of the running for a QB, the number of teams that NEED a qb between 1st and 9th is only 2. For those who follow the Seahawks, do you know if Whitehurst is their answer at QB or would they take Bradford with their first pick, or maybe Clausen if he drops to their second? Also, Cleveland has Delhome now, but they are clearly going to need someone breed for the future.

Overall, if it's the only team needing a qb is the Rams, and they don't take Bradford, where does he go? Personally, I would absolutely trade up from 9 to 4 if I thought that would land me Bradford. Or, if not, how far could we trade back and still get Clausen.

At the end of the day, I think the Rams will take Bradford, but if they don't, I think this could end up very well for us.

McNabb going to the Skins is terrible for the Bills. Means they will more than likely go LT for sure. Hope the Lions take DT or the Bills could miss out on the top LT's. Don't be surprised if it's Spiller at 9.

  10. Buffalo hasn't traded down since 2001, but I've always felt Levy/Jauron/Brandon simply weren't savvy enough to drop down and still get their guy. Graham at 9 would be too high, but those characters from 06-09 are gone now, save Smithers.

Gailey's supposed offensive wizardry as noted by several TBD'ers would seem to indicate they go defensively, but it's not certain either. Offensively, whether it's either a run first or balanced offense, they need OT's. Green is limited, and behind him there's nothing. Bell, Meredith, et al, aren't NFL starters. They go OT with the first pick, as long as at least Bulaga or Trent Williams are available.

Agree on Graham. Bell and Meredith could be NFL starters. They are still young in the game. Some players take time to develop. Actually most do. Especially a guy like Bell who has played about 5 years of organized football in his life.

Bulaga and Williams I have a feeling will be gone. Bills should trade down anyway and pick up another 2nd, but if they stay at 9 and the top tackles are gone don't be surprised if it's Spiller.

  11. Good post. I agree with your comparisons of Graham to Woodley and Freeney. I think the guys gonna be a great pro and I would love it if the Bills drafted him. Another positive attribute of BG is his character and work ethic. By all accounts he's a great kid who provided tremendous leadership to his teammates while UM football was going thru it's toughest stretch in decades. GO BLUE!!!

Maybe so, but they can trade down and still get Graham from 18-25. At 9? No sir.

  12. The problem is no way he makes it past the Jags and the Bills know it. He would be instant ticket sales to them hense worth their first rounder which I think is just behind us at 10

Dude, Jacksonville won't take Tebow at 10. He might go in the late first round to a team like Minnesota or if someone traded up from the second round to the bottom of the first and that's a MIGHT; top ten of the second round more likely. Bills will not take him at 9. A guy who is a project will not sell tickets for any team if he's sitting on the bench. All this hype will die down when it's actually time for teams to hand in their selection card. He's too risky to blow a high number one pick on.

But if the Bills take him in the second round I wouldn't be surprised to see Tebow running a spread offense next season as the starter.

  13. I am pretty well convinced that Seattle will take a LT. They just traded for (and spent money on) a young QB, and they need to protect him. They're not going to take Spiller. I also don't think Pioli was blowing smoke when he questioned taking a safety in the top 10 - I think he really believes that. I'm concerned that the Chiefs will take Bulaga, with the thought that between Bulaga and Albert they'll have a solid tackle combination for the next decade (and don't forget the Ferenz-Patriots connection). I also think that the Raiders are eyeing Trent Williams at 8. In other words, I'm very, very worried that the Bills will be left holding the bag once again, with a choice between the fourth best LT (Davis - a significant "bust" potential) or a reach pick.

    I hope I'm wrong...

I don't believe in a reach if you need a player. For instance, I would rather draft Dan Williams than the 4th LT at number 9. Williams is said to be a possibility to Denver and Miami two or three picks after the Bills select. So get him. He's a true NT and the Bills need one. I wouldn't even mind Spiller unlike most on the board. Can get LT in 2nd round.

  14. Any way you slice it he's better than what we have now, and even if we do take a LT in the 1st, it would be nice to have a veteran to plug in while he's acclimating to the pro game.

He might be better than what we have, but a LT is not being drafted who can't step on the field from day one.

  15. I apologize if I missed the discussion elsewhere (and i did look), but why would a college QB with aspirations of playing in the NFL not work on taking the ball from under center, proper throwing motion, understanding the pro set etc, etc on his own time while in college, as opposed to weeks before the draft? It seems to me that if they where REALLY serious about their future they would spend time during EACH off season (college) to do just that. What am I missing???

Why would they do this? They're on scholarship and being coached by men who are supposed to know the game. The coach has the job to prepare the players and strengthen their weaknesses for the benefit of the player who is playing in the system he runs.

For instance, Urban Meyer does not run a pro style offense. So Tebow did not practice what pro QB's do. If his coaches are not saying he has issues and he's successful with the coaching he received, and he was, why would he believe he needed to do anything different? It's not like pro scouts are talking to these players before they are eligible for the draft saying your motion is bad. And it's not necessarily Meyer's job to make Tebow a pro QB. It's Meyer's job to make Tebow a University of Florida QB. If QB's want "pro" type coaching they need to play for a coach who runs a pro style offense.

  16. The closer we get to the combine and draft, the more I sense momentum building amongst league personnel guys behind one Tim Tebow. I'm not even sure how this could be happening at this phase in the game because he hasn't done anything but train privately since the end of the season, so what gives?

I believe what's going on is that people have had time to step back and really digest his college career, which in turn is causing them to see the sum of his parts (leadership, maturity, unique physical tools, production, etc.) instead of regurgitating Brian Billick's arm-slot, slow-motion breakdown from the Sugar Bowl.

A strong Senior Bowl week, dozens of impressive one-on-one interviews, and the insane combine numbers this guy is inevitably going to put up will absolutely rocket the kid up some draft boards. Maybe not everyone's, but all it takes is one.

Now, let's focus on the Bills current situation: We've got an ancient, set-in-his-ways, old school owner. An ancient, good ol' boy GM, who as a scout, valued QBs with over-the-top competitive drives (Brees, Rivers) and was willing to think outside the box and draft players who didn't fit the "prototypical NFL QB" (Brees because of his height and even Rivers to a certain extent because he had a bit of an unorthodox release point coming out of college). When you throw in our good ol' boy, southern HC who believes supremely in his ability to develop QB talent, I think we are looking at a recipe for Tebow to the Bills.

Also, if you've watched ESPN today, I'm sure you've seen the numerous "Tebow updates." And that's just been for the Senior Bowl weigh-ins! He will obviously be a marketing department's dream no matter where he goes, but I think he would be particularly effective in a blue-collar region such as Western NY.

Just a hunch and my two cents.

I seriously doubt it. I could see them trading up into the bottom of the 1st or taking him in the second round. At 9 I don't think so. Now you might be right that they make a splash at #9, but that would be one C.J. Spiller.

  17. You could be right, it remains to be seen...but I couldn't let your blog go by without dispute..

I think we will go more heavy on the Offensive side of the ball..I know for sure that our first 2 priorities should be OLT and QB !! I am not looking for anyone's agreement..it's just my personal feeling that we don't have a decent left tackle period.

The QB may or may not be a high pick depending on their guy, but I'll bet the farm that they will select one! I also am sure that they will go for a WR with little doubt. They claim that they want a scat back so maybe a RB will be in the mix as well if that's not just a smokescreen. I do agree that they desperately need a NT, and some LB's as well. I would be a little

p/o'd if they picked a DE high in the draft because they picked Maybe Maybin last year and Chris Ellis the year before in the capacity of DE's and so far they struck out! There are only so many selections they have and here is my preferences:

    Round #1 OLT

    2 QB

    3 NT

    4 WR

    5 OLB

    6 LB

6 WR (I'm not sure thought we might have a 2nd 6th rounder?)

    7 DE

I think the Bills will likely do some trading up and down in this draft like Cleveland did last year to pick up additional picks, but here's what I think with what we have to work with. Looks like a even O / D split in selections with higher picks mostly for the Offense!

    two 6th's and two 7th's.

  18. If you put a gun to my head and told me I had to choose between these two options, I would first think about telling you to pull the trigger. But after thinking about the fact that I want to spend many more years with my kids, I would choose Tebow in the second rather than Clausen with the 9th pick in the draft. If the Bills brain trust (Nix and Gailey) thought that they could make an NFL QB out of Tebow (as would be demonstrated by their picking him in the second round), I would trust their judgment on that.

Tebow (and this is coming from a Miami Hurricane fan) has a lot more character in my opinion than Clausen ever will have. You know that Tebow is going to do everything he can to help the team - whether that be improving as a QB, playing tight end, coming in as the wild cat QB, or whatever else they ask him to do.

Clausen, on the other hand, is not the kind of guy that I would want as my QB and have to pay the kind of money that we are going to have to pay the 9th pick in the draft. I know the ND guys have a man love for this guy (just as they did with Brady Quinn). Given the number of needs that we have, we can pick the best player available at number 9 rather than reach for Clausen at that spot. Later in the draft, I might consider him, but certainly not at number 9.

Clausen was much better than Brady Quinn as a collegiate QB. Not that I want him at 9. Pick him up later in round 1 after trading down or if he slips into the second, cool. It will all come down to his pro day. If he kills his like Bradford did all the negative talk about him will go away.

  19. I think we would have to probably throw in other picks besides pick 41. Most likely a 4th and a 6th or a 3rd next year plus the 2nd this season and a 6th this season.

I would love for it to happen at the right price. LT is such a big need and if we can get a solid one like Gather to nasty up our O-line and free up our 3rd round and 1st round picks to be much more fluid (NT, MLB, WR, RT, and QB could be addressed pick 9 but none of them are as big of a need as LT) allowing us to draft the best player at pick 9.

If the trade was our 2nd and our 6th this season plus a conditional 4th next season (That could escalate to a 3rd) I would do it. Its a really good amount of picks for the Ravens and a really good player for us.

I doubt they would have to give up all of that. The 2nd and 6th should work. I wouldn't include anything in next years draft. This would be great if they could do it. Then trade out of 9 and get that 2nd round pick back or an extra 3rd.
