Shi Smith would be appropriate.........he is the Gabe Davis of this draft for me..........that receiver that I don't want to like and never mock draft to the Bills..........that I know is probably going to be really good.

I'm not a big fan of Basham, but I've felt all along that round 2 was going to be the spot where it was going to be the hardest for the Bills to get value relative to what round 2 usually yields. No matter what mock draft site I used there were usually only 1-2 guys still there when I picked that I really thought would be good value..........and in the actual draft NONE of those guys were there. Basham is not real toolsy IMO, not at that size at least, but he plays hard and brings an edge, which I think is an underrated need for this defense. They miss the intensity of a Lorenzo Alexander and he seems like that kinda' personality. If he hits the Shaq-ometer ceiling of Melvin Ingram........it will obviously have been a great pick.

You are a hater so you only remember things that I post that you perceive are negative. You remember me not liking the Sammy Watkins trade, but not that the only player from that draft class that I actually advocated drafting was Aaron Donald......who at the time was seen as a "meh" first round option by the board, with a lot of skeptics. I actually started a thread, which is rare, got like 10 responses and that was it. Wasn't seen as a "need". Obviously, he turned out to be the best player in that draft. If I had started a negative thread at that time it could go on for weeks.

Yep, after QB the most expensive players in football are top pass rushers and LT's. Good, sound decision making.

Harrison Phillips played much better towards the end of the season..........I expect him to be back to his 2019 form when he was clearly outplaying Star.........but he is another one who isn't very impactful. Zimmer is just a 3T.......he can't play the 1T or NT effectively. Butler can play both. Contrary to popular belief the second half of the season defense was quite good against possibly the Bills toughest schedule in decades........not sure what a 32 year old Star has to offer at this point. Bills can't cut him because of the dead money hit, but they could IR him and just eat the rest of that foolish contract. I agree that they pick up a DT in the draft yet or in UDFA. Damon Harrison would be a big improvement over Lotulelei too and he played for around $2M last season.

Star and Addison are the least valuable. Bam Johnson is really good on special teams and a breakout candidate so I don't see him going. They can rationalize Obada as both a 3T and DE. Zimmer is an energy player that I don't think they will want to let go. This is kinda' where keeping Addison and Butler didn't make a great deal of sense.........but I see them keeping 10 DL on the 53 anyway.

75 would be a good number for him. Good number for a wide shouldered, narrow hipped guy. Marcellus Wiley's old # I believe.

That certainly wasn't my reaction to Shaq. Or Ragland. I will put it this way..........I am often seen as a skeptic of McBeane because I try to be objective about their decisions...........but 4 of the 5 first round picks they've made have been guys I wanted.........White(my #1 CB in that class), Edmunds(my #1 pass rusher in that class) and Allen(biggest upside QB) and now Rousseau(my #1 pass rusher in this class). I preferred DK Metcalf over Ed Oliver.......and I'm still burnt about them passing a SECOND time on him........but in round one I knew the writing was on the wall that they needed a KW replacement and I felt he could be a 10 sack guy from the 3 tech in time so liked the player a lot. Pass rusher is second only to QB in importance(which to my satisfaction Beane said himself last night). In my 30 years of draftnik'ing the Bills almost never took the guy that I wanted.........there was no system or process, each draft was viewed as a separate event and the focus was too heavy toward immediate returns.........and they subsequently got diminishing returns in the 90's and then sucked in the 2000's. Beane seems to understand what round 1 is all about. His PC after the pick was music to my ears.......all the things I have been preaching for 15 years during the draft process.

I try to keep an open mind but there isn't a great big nickel in the NFL. Your best bet against an elite TE is still to put a good CB on him. It's not like we haven't seen Tre White do a good job on Gronk or Antoine Winfield blanketing Tony Gonzalez a couple decades ago. That's your best bet. I don't see JOK as being as good in coverage as Asante Samuel......who I could use elsewhere when the TE isn't a big threat......... so I would never pick JOK over a guy like that.

I'm by no means a homer.........seeing these guys every game I see all the warts........but Rousseau's opt out was a crushing blow for Miami. Jaelan Phillips was a poor substitute for Rousseau. There were games it looked like nobody WANTED to make a tackle. UNC ran for 550 yards against the "Phillips lead" Miami in the regular season finale. Pathetic.

Yeah the only problem with Matt Miller's mock is that it didn't include a safety. When they let Marlowe walk I assumed they would draft a safety. That said.......it's a not a premium position. A safety would still have to be pretty special to go top 3 rounds for me. I still try to fill premium positions..........I'd prefer Marshall to Moore.........but either would be excellent value in round 2. I think size with speed is a big need in the receiving corps, Marshall has that.

1) Yes, look at the game logs........he was a backup player until game 7 on the schedule. It wasn't like he got shut down by the UNC's and VT's early in the season, these were just the first games of his college career. 2) We have a DE on the team in Jerry Hughes who gets TONS of pressure with an impressive pass rushing skillset........but doesn't make plays. Rousseau was surrounded by college versions of Hughes at Miami in his great year 19 age season. Bees buzzing around the QB but Rousseau was the only one who could play with his head up and then reach out and make the plays. 3) I don't see the Shaq comp at all. That was a "meh" pick.......as I said here at the time..........low ceiling. A more conventional, smaller guy like that needs a lot more juice to impact the QB and he simply didn't have the burst. His get off was abysmal. While Rousseau isn't twitchy he impacts OL quickly with the long arms and strides and powerful hands and doesn't allow them to execute their technique. I like Jerry Hughes..........it's great having the top pass rush win rate guy in the entire NFL.........but I'd prefer he got less pressures and more tackles behind the LOS. Not saying Oweh can't be more productive than that.....but this is the kind of stuff we are talking about.

Matt Miller had the Bills taking Rousseau in round 1 and Rondale Moore in round 2...........if he nails those that will be impressive and a pretty good haul for the Bills.

In fairness, when Sweat was 19 he was a complete non-factor bench player at Michigan State. He's a better athlete and by the time he was 21-22 he was putting up some numbers but his nose for the ball lagged behind that athleticism..........he left a lot on the table. He's been pretty good as a pro but his size/speed screams NFL DPOY candidate but going into his year 25 season he's not really there yet.

I've said it before.........name one running back that the Bills passed on that went in round 1 in the last 25 years that anyone regrets not getting. It's doesn't happen. Running backs used to be a dime a dozen.........now they are still a half dozen for a dime but their impact on the game has been greatly diminished. First round picks are for players that you will have to pay upwards of $20M per year to on their second contract if they reach their ceilings. Bills can win with what they have or find their version of James Robinson later. RB's are still easy to find.

As I've said before..........let me know when a 6'1" 216# "big nickel" with tiny hands does everything this mythical creature is purportedly capable of. He won't actually cover a top TE in the NFL effectively........he sure as hell won't cover a slot WR like Cole Beasley.........so wtf is the point of taking a CB off the field for him and making yourself worse in coverage?

I will say this...........as a Miami fan.........Jaelan Phillips was a POOR substitute for Greg Rousseau. Rousseau opting out was a dagger to the program. Rousseau had barely ever played DL in a game prior to the 2019 season and then did what he did while not being a starter until half way thru the season. Phillips is the better athlete but he just didn't make NEARLY enough plays. And I don't know how the narrative came out that Phillips was a player against the run..........but nope. It was pass rush or fail for Phillips. That's not the case with Rousseau.

It wasn't disastrous. He ran faster than and is taller than Jason Pierre Paul, who had the same vertical Jump. His hands and speed compared favorably to Jevon Kearse. The comp used more often is Calais Campbell and of course he ran A LOT faster than him, Campbell was 290 when drafted.........but Rousseau has the same length, same vert, but with 11" hands compared to CC's 9.75" hands and Rousseau did more reps on the bench despite being 20 pounds lighter.

We've lost a little perspective by guys like Oweh running in the 4.3's or Clowney jumping thru the roof in testing...........but the standard for Freakish DL prospects used to be guys like JPP and Kearse who didn't actually produce broadly amazingly track #'s. The track stuff isn't what stands out about him..........it's the length, hands and instincts(or GPS as Jeremiah calls it).

I thought so when I originally saw those comps a few weeks ago.. But Kearse's track #'s wouldn't seem as freakish today. He ran a 4.58. Couple inches shorter than Rousseau. The freaky thing about Kearse were the 11.5" hands.......which is, of course, the freakish thing about Rousseau as well.

I'm not. When "big nickels" actually start covering stud slot WR's or TE's in the NFL........let me know. It's mostly a fantasy.

Yeah the Bills drafted Northern in round 2 in 1996..........he was a beast on special teams and had his moments as a pass rusher..........but he always looked like he was too upright and stiff to tie his shoes. I had my fingers crossed for a DL named Brady Smith in round 2. Smith wasn't great but had a nice career. I liked Gabe but in like round 5. This was a common theme with John Butler. I was big on Erik Flowers in round 6 all during the draft process..........just a moldable piece to develop.......my jaw about dropped off my head when he went to Buffalo in round 1. For a guy running a 3-4 forever he was not great at evaluating OLB's.

He reminds me of an overgrown version of former Bills OLB Gabe Northern. Very stiff........which negates a lot of his length. Mobile QB's tend to make guys like that miss and put them on highlight reels. You gotta' be a BEAST to be that stiff and make plays.

Agree. How soon we forget the folly of the "off the bus starters" draft of 2016 on this board. IMO a future LT who can be good at guard as a rookie would be the most helpful addition but a good CB would be too. Not sure how deep into the draft we can EXPECT to get a CB who will beat out Levi Wallace and Dan Jackson though. If said rookie makes mistakes, it won't matter if he runs like hell, he won't play ahead of Levi.
