Mike Martz seems VERY smart, he wants to get back to coaching
Red replied to Chuckknox's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Aren't you forgetting about Dick Vermeil? Martz is now responsible for getting Warner? Funny, all this time I thought Vermeil was the coach in charge of the Rams at the time Warner was introduced... -
A little help here...Did you just say that the first round of the draft is on a Thursday? Aren't they always on the weekend?
-
They were thinking of a undersized hybrid Tackle/ RB- type of player....

Vick sucks! Dungy is performing a tremendous service for Vick, by using his reputation to 'sell' his dog killing client. The guy has proven he's not a leader, and should not be in the NFL. And certainly nowhere near the Bills locker room or OBD- except as a tackling dummy. NO MORE GIMMICKS! We need a FRANCHISE QB!

AHAHAHAHAHAHA You're TOO funny!

Thank you. And then didn't Seifert take his destructive ways to Carolina, only to ruin what Polian had built, too? -

Truly you are jesting. He ran the Rams into the ground the way Mariuchi ran the 49ers into the ground. Psih, 'built the Rams'. VERMEIL BUILT the Rams, dude! -
Interesting report about resting starters for playoffs
Red replied to Just Jack's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Interesting opinion, but I am not sure where you are getting your facts from. Are you citing actual ratings, or just an opinion that America loves Peyton more than Brees? -
Oh man, not another prime-time opportunity for the Bills to be scorched on national TV.

So, what...we're arguing that we're the most mediocre team in the league now?

I'm really onboard with this one! I hate the Pats with such disdain that I used to have for the Dolphins. Those games have become insignificant, and the Patriots have been so in-your-face dominant this decade, I want to strap up! The sad reality is that even with this game being a homer, The Bills are so banged up I don't know they can pull it off. The next 3 games are going to be tough, Pats, Indy, Atlanta. GO BILLS!

I was so hoping that somebody on the Bills offense would have given Vrabel the one-finger salute for all of his shenanigans when he was a member of the Patriots. Man, between Vrabel and the retired-Rodney Harrison, I did not know which one was more classless.

Living in the Metro DC area, the Redskins are obviously the home town team. After watching the Bills game yesterday, I turned on the Skins- Raiders game, and was pretty impressed. Yes- I was mainly watching for Orakpo and all the former Bills castoffs to see how they perform (M. Williams, Fletcher). Orakpo was positioned all over the defensive line. He was running stunts, rushing from the outside to the inside and BEATING Guards! Then he would come in off the edge with a speed rush, and either get a sack or disrupt the offense and what they were trying to do. Granted, it was the Raiders- man, does Jamarcus Russell not suck with a capital 'S'?- but Orakpo was a beast last week against the Saints as well. He consistently drove back the LT of the Saints into the backfield, and on the next play would put on this speed rush that was frightening. I was watching Maybin yesterday, and not only did he get royally burned on the outside on one play (where he has outside contain), but somebody ELSE made an average tackle for no gain and he was jumping up and down like an idiot. Maybin may develop into something down the road, but for a team with needs such as the Bills, Orakpo is the here-and-now. I shudder to think what we would be like with a few simple changes in our drafting these past couple of years. Drafting Ngata instead of Whitner. Outbidding Miami for the services of LDE Cameron Wake. And drafting Orakpo instead of Maybin. That's a scary defensive line.

My sentiments, exactly. Give us a real GM, pro personnel department, etc and I will rest easy. It will take time, but I think progress will be quick.

Let's not forget that Gruden was most likely contacted (since he was the original #1 on the Bills list and came out to say he was committed to the broadcast booth). The Bills also contacted Cowher (who stated that he wants to wait until the season is over) and Holmgren (who said 'no'). That is a pretty good plan.

Excellent points. I loved Rusty Jones, as during that time, the Bills had the talent to be in the Super Bowl every year, and the club used every edge it could to dominate (like the weather). This team is beset by SO many things beyond conditioning (Ellison not suited to be a starting NFL linebacker, having safeties play LB, etc), but it is primarily the scheme that is to blame. The 'Tampa 2', zone defense is hopefully dead once Fewell leaves. Having bigger lines, a bigger LB corp, and a better overall scheme will serve to lower these injuries of sheer forces and collision.

Can we really target one positon ?
Red replied to Buffaloed in Pa's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Ok, once a GM has been selected, and he has hired his staff, then I would assume that a complete overhaul of the defensive philosophy is in order. Since both of our lines have been the afterthought of Modrak and Guy, and Donahoe (Levy atleast- mistakenly- realized that we need a line when he went out and got Walker and Dockery), they would be my priority. I think we need to see who is available to us when we pick. We have alot of players on this roster that could be traded, and combined with picks may help us move up. I love Suh. Apparently, so does everyone else. I'd probably got with the best LT or DT depending on who was around when we picked, and see if we could get back into the 1st round without mortgaging the future to help out with either the lines again or LB position. In other words: 1a: LT/ DT 1b: Offensive/ Defensive line/ LB -

A GM. -
As far as Grimm is concerned, I would hope that he would tailor an offensive attack designed around Buffalo's strengths, as IMHO, the Cards pass too much. But I guess when you have both Fitzgerald and Boldin with Warner at QB, passing would be the name of the game. The Bills would need a more physical running-based attack. Just give me a top GM, and I will be happy with the coach (providing its not Billick or Martz).

At first I would have called for your tar-and-feathering, but I have evolved into realizing that hiring solely a big-name coach will not change the outcome of this sorry franchise. I am in complete agreement that we should be spending the "big" bucks on compiling a robust and successful front office, starting with a winning GM that knows how to builds franchises. Floyd Reese and Bruce Allen come to mind. As does Bill Parcells....who is not under any contractual obligation with the Dolphins, BTW...

Absolutely. The Maybin pick is a pick of team drafting as if it has luxuries, and not needs. Peters, after all the Bills did for him in signing as an undrafted free agent and developing him into a Pro Bowl LT worthy of millions of dollars, ended up giving them McGahee treatment. IMO, both players would have been nothing without the Bills (McGahee still is nothing as far as I am concerned). I know the lame-o's will cite "It's a business" blah, blah, blah. But there is no thankfulness in having a team take a chance on you and allow you to develop, heal, and showcase yourself to the rest of the league? They are better off without both of them. Character speaks volumes. My issue, like you mentioned as have many others, is that if you lose Peters than you have got to replace him. Could you imagine if we DID draft Oher AND Wood in the first round? I really like Butler, and although Levitre is coming on, I don't know that I would have even drafted Levitre with Oher, Wood, Butler, and Hangartner on the roster. We could have used the Levitre pick for our defensive line. But alas, here's to hoping that an actual GM with experience winning comes in, and Modrak and Guy are sent packing.

...and slipping in the snow. Blah, blah, blah. Vick is a horrible fit for the Bills. In case you have not noticed, we need a franchise QB. Not a gimmick like we currently have at WR.

I can't believe with Mauron gone they are still doing this!
Red replied to Red's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
So most believe that, given the fact that the Bills play in an outdoor stadium with notoriously devious winds, wind chills, freezing rain, and sometimes sub-zero temperatures, that they should not train for this and use it to their competitive advantage? Granted, this franchise has needed more than a weather advantage to cure its ills this decade. But on the flip side, I grew up with the Super Bowl Bills. I started watching football in '88. I can remember the rivalry with the Dolphins, and how teams like them (Raiders) would constantly come in and be intimidated by not only the Bills, but always be b!tch!n about how they were going to deal with the elements that is Ralph Wilson Stadium. Bills players would not wear shirt sleeves in an effort to intimidate the opposition psychologically. Last year's Cleveland game was an embarrassment, not solely because we lost to the Browns, but that the Bills were clearly unprepared to play in the elements. That a cold weather club, with an outdoor stadium such as the Bills, to be as unprepared as they were last season against the Browns is a terrible indictment that these guys need to learn how to play in the snow. -
I don't either. I think that it stems from the Buc fan base voicing displeasure when Dungy was head coach that for as good as Tampa was in getting to the playoffs every season and owning their division, that his teams were kind of 'Marty-esque' in that once in the playoffs, they always went nowhere. That is why Tampa management went wild and traded some 1st round picks to Oakland to get their paws on Gruden- who, as history shows, actually advanced Tampa to become Super Bowl Champs. Now, some argue that it was this change in attitude that was needed (Dungy is too passive, Gruden is in-your-face, aggressive), and there is some validity to that. But Dungy has Indy to fall back on. He got Indy to a Super Bowl and also won one. So for all of the naysayers of Dungy based on his Tampa experience, I say Indy is his vindicator. But I would want Bruce Allen at GM to complement him.
