  1. Man, that sucks for Fred. I hope Ralph doesn't gouge the guy. He's played his tail off around here. They should give him a 3 year deal worth atleast $2.5 million per, AT LEAST. I'd say he's proven his worth around here.

sounds like the right price tag 2.5 Mil a year. Lock him up 3-4 years.

  2. That was a great interview - a young QB talking about what it's like to be a young QB in the NFL. If anything Trent's maturity struck me; he gets that there will be ups and downs, but he needs to keep his head straight and work hard to have his success.

I liked his answer on the Warner / Ben question. A bit of both, respect for Warner's accuracy and a love for Ben's ability to just make the freaking play. Please Trent, learn both.

And I think it's clear that he likes Buffalo - he talks about the most important thing in Buffalo, the people. Loved the Starbucks story and comparison...

Here's to good things in '09!

I gotta agree. He sounds mature for his age . Amazing how 1Billshater got all that from Trent's interview. Actually it's not that amazing, more like "typical"

  3. I completely agree that whether Whitner has or has not lived up to his status as a #8 overall draft pick has no bearing on whether we should extend him. To be honest, one of the last things I want the Bills to do is to get rid of this guy, if only because that might well mean using yet another top-10 or top-15 pick on reaching for some safety.

Marv Levy once said that once you start listening to the fans, you'll soon be up in the stands with them. By this he meant that a coach (and, presumably, a front office type) had to be smarter than the fan base to retain his job for any length of time.

I want you to think back to what the fan base wanted, back before that 8th overall pick had been spent. Some were calling for the Bills to take Ngata. Some (including me) pointed out Losman was not the answer at quarterback, and suggested the Bills use the pick on Cutler. Some (such as Bill from NYC) had suggested the Bills trade down and take Mangold. Any of these options would clearly have worked out much better than taking Whitner. None of these options represents 20/20 hindsight, because they were all suggested--and intensely advocated--before the Whitner pick had been made.

One hopes for a front office that's smarter than the fan base. It's frustrating to us as fans when so much of the fan base proves smarter than the front office (at least in this instance). It's this frustration--this sense of wasted opportunity--which makes Whitner's 8th overall draft position come up so often. On the other hand, it's really cool whenever the front office proves smarter than the fan base. Picks like Trent Edwards in the third, Brad Butler in the fifth, and Steve Johnson in the seventh, are guys that represent very good value for their draft position. And I don't remember fans calling for these particular players before the respective drafts in which they were taken. The more often the front office proves smarter than the fan base, the better the Bills are likely to do!

    good post!!

Pretty much are the same people that are wanting to trade Marshawn, Peters and getting rid of Whitner, Trent Edwards and Schobel

  4. As far as the review he got for his blocking, That is'nt consistant with the commentary that he recieved from game announcers and analysts through out the season. What I saw and heard about him, he is a good blocker.

  5. The jets will probably trade up for a qb in the first round. That isn't any great shakes for us as I suppose to get a good qb they will need a top five pick. JP isn't anyone's idea of a starting qb right now and he'll be lucky to catch on with pretty much any team in a back up role.

your right, but some team that is in need of a qb will probably give him a chance to compete for a spot, while they are looking to either groom or find their future qb.

  6. Here's Bo Scaife scouting report (albeit a bit outdated) from ESPN Scout's Inc:

2008 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc.

    Grade: 67 | Key

    Alert: None

Comment: Scaife is a four-year veteran out of Texas who was drafted by the Titans in the sixth round of the 2005 draft. He is their all purpose tight end who moves around from tight end to H-back to being split out like a wide receiver. He is somewhat-undersized for a blocking tight end, but is a very accomplished receiver. He is quick-footed, very quick on his release from the line of scrimmage and difficult to press or jam. He runs good routes and has a burst coming out of his breaks to separate from defenders. He has a very large receiving radius and can reach out to pluck the ball when thrown high, low or outside of his frame. He has soft, sure hands and does a good job of concentrating to make the difficult catch in traffic. Scaife has become one of Vince Young's favorite targets, especially in crunch time, thanks to their time together at the University of Texas. He can stretch the secondary down the middle and has some run after the catch skills. He is not real strong as an inline blocker, but can screen and shield people in the open field as a stalk blocker.

    69-60: Average Starter

A valuable roster player but is not dominant against the better players he faces on a week-to-week basis... Gives great effort and you are glad that he is on your team, but he may or may not go to the next level.

And I'm sure if they rated him today he would get an even more favorable writeup. This was his scouting report going into the season and he had his best year yet this past year. I'm really hoping we target him this offseason. He would most likely cost no more than $750,000 more a year than royal, proven player, much better production with good upside. Plus it's another area we wouldnt have to address in the draft.

  7. My analysis is absurd that he played inferior competition and that should be factored in ? The SEC and BIG 12 are light years ahead of the ACC and BIG 10. They almost don't play the same sport.... not recently, anyway, since the Florida's went in the tank. He might be the best player in the draft (, just saying he didn't play top notch talent every week although those games against Western Carolina and Chattanooga must have taken their toll on them as well.

It should be a factor... if he had the same play/stats against the SEC he would be ranked in the top three

ACC light years behind the BIG 10? LOL

you obviously havnt been watching to much college football.

    Boston College

    Virginia Tech

    Virginia

    North Carolina

    Maryland

    Georgia Tech

    UM

    Florida State

    Wake Forest

    Clemson

all these teams where in the top 25 at one point in the season

top to bottom ACC is definitely more competitive and getting stronger

  8. I don't think they go Johnson, but I totally agree with you that the fans here who think Orakpo, Raji and Brown will be there at 11 are going to be dissapointed.

I just don't see any way either of those guys make it to us at 11. I think there is more value in other picks at 11 over Johnson...DE is clearly a need, but I am not sold on Johnson being the answer, especially at #11. I think Raji is surely gone too...I just don't see how Cinci doesnt take him. They were hot for Sedrick Ellis last year and missed out on him, they are just as bad at DT this year, so I can't forsee them passing on him.

So, I think that we will look hard at Pettigrew or the best LB available.

Don't be surprised if they pick up Crabtree, Huszmanzada will be gone and Chad Johnson is on the decline and they need to feed their #1 player Carson Palmer with a stud...

Personally for Buffalo I'd like to see Brown available, but he probably won't be there, Raji would be my next choice then Orapko, my feeling is one of them will be there. If not, trading down would be ideal, but I wouldnt be surprised if we went Pettigrew.

  9. there is no doubt that we have been hoping that Donte would bring some more playmaking ability to the table, but he has been very solid in tackling and coverage. I hope that by providing more pass rush with our DE's he will be more of a playmaker.

  10. I am also an optimist by nature, and I tend to look at the bright side of things. When people concentrate on the negatives, usually negative things tend to follow.

Looking at the Bills for 2010, I have lots of Optimism. I am positive that our team will be an improved team from the year before.

QB position. Trent Edwards will be entering his second full year at the helm, there is no doubt that he improved from his Rookie season, evidence is in the stats and he now has the total onfidence of his team mates which is huge and he knows that if he is put in the position and they need for him to drive down the field and get the win, that he has the ability to do it. So there is little doubt in my mind that he will improve from last year.

    RB

What is there not to be excited about here. We have a fantastic 1-2 combo and they are only going to get better. Another year of familiarity in the system and added experience will most likely mean better production than last year.

OL The O-Line is intact from last year, they made strides at the end of the year in their run blocking, If Jason Peters can come into camp this year and not hold out, there will certainly be an upgrade on Offensive Tackle play from last year, since last year was a poor year by his standards. Hopefully We will upgrade at Center so that would be a plus. Either way, the worst case scenario is that we have the same players as last year, so we would have similar production as last year. So I believe there is a very good chance that we upgrade here as well.

TE This is another area where we will most likely upgrade through FA or the draft. Worst case scenario we go with Royal and Fine, in which I think that most people agree that Fine is on the rise, so worst case, we improve slightly.

WR No doubt that we improve here. Steve Johnson should give us an immediate upgrade from his rookie year production, Hardy is a question mark, just the fact of Steve Johnson having a most likely bigger role than last year makes this crew an upgrade from last year.

DE Schobel will be back so that is an immediate upgrade as opposed to NOT having him. And I'm pretty sure we will upgrade through FA or the draft, so we will be better in this area.

DT We will most likely go with the same players as last year minus McCargo and possibly pick a player up through the draft. Worst case scenario we stand pat, which means we stay the same, but there is a chance of picking up a player.

DB Greer will possibly be gone, but Mckelvin and Corner are coming into their second year and will undoubtedly play even better than their rookie years and Youbouty will be coming back from injury. A wash

Safety Worst case scenario we stand pat from last year. So most likely a wash

LB we will most likely resign Crowell or a FA or pick one up through the draft. Plus we were decimated with injuries with Digiorgio and Bowen, so this area will most likely be improved as well.

Coaching A wash, same as last year.

  11. Why do you always have to be such a TURD, calling other people childish names because you don't agree with them?

I know you got offended with that statement, because your another miserable negative person. It's not that I say this because there is a difference of an opinion, but I say this because I see there are certain posters on this message board that Never ever have anything positive to say. Which tells me that they are negative by nature and never have anything constructive to say. (btw childish is calling someone a TURD, not calling them miserable)

  12. I guess you didn't see Holcomb play after he left the Bills. He was done. His arm was totally kaput.

it's no use arguing with him about Trent, no matter what you say at the end of the day him and a few others thinks he sucks.

Trent is just gonna have to prove them all wrong. Even though the Holcomb statement is pretty absurd

  13. I disagree. The Bills can't afford to sit back and wait for Hardy or Johnson anymore than they can afford to wait for Chris Ellis at DE. Obviously, they can't completely give up on any of them, but the fact is, they need immediate help at both positions. That does not necessarily mean that they must sign Bryant or burn a high pick at WR, but if they believe they can acquire a top WR this offseason who would provide an instant upgrade to this offense, they should certainly give it strong consideration. That's especially true given that they're already likely to add a midround WR in the draft or a decent FA at the position, anyway.

I understnad what your saying, but you say "we can't afford to sit back and wait for Hardy or Johnson anymore

    .

We really havn't been waiting on them too long right? Did we not see good improvement from Johnson when given the chance. When given the opportunity he showed that he could put points up on the board. What I liked most about him was his ability to give us a inside the ten yard red zone slant pattern option for points. We havnt had that in many years. His thick 6-2 big body frame helped out, and I have the feeling if we commit to him next year and give him the opportunity to start he will put up good numbers. As far as Hardy is concerned and his injury, well, that sucks. I hate that he has had this knee injury and I'm thinking that will hinder his progress for 2010, I hope I'm wrong. I like his work ethic and his size and leaping ability. But Johnson I think is gonna surprise a lot of people next year and I believe the Bills Brass is taking notice.

  14. Superbowl against the Cowboys, Early drive in the second half, We're driving and Kelly throws a pass to Metzellars, Metzellars slips and Cowboys intercept the ball and the rest is history....

I remember that game, Jimmy Johnson makes the decisions for the Cowboys to wear special shoes for the games so the players wouldnt slip as much and I think that made a big difference in the final outcome.

  15. Link is in above post as 1 reason I would definatley sign him.

Its amazing how some here would like to keep the status QUO in Recievers- Hello we have been 7-9 the last 3 years witht hese receivers an upgrade is seriously over due!!!!

    Wrong

we have not been 7-9 with these same recievers the last 3 years. Hardy and Johnson are both newcomers, and have lots of upside between the two of them and it would be silly not to explore that route, before we commit Millions of dollars in a player that has had a terribly inconsistant career. Of course you can't see that, cuz your a miserable negative person.

  16. As much as I realize how important it is for the Bills to have a better 1 - 2 punch at the WR position, I am hopeful that Steve Johnson can be the man. There are 3 to 4 guys that are competent enough on this team in my view to make up a succeful WR crew. What we have been lacking is a true 1 - 2. We have a few three's, but I have a feeling that Steve Johnson can fill that void. I wouldn't be upset if Bryant was signed because there is no doubt that it would be an upgrade from what we have, but at $6 Million a year, and having Steve Johnson and Hardy, I think the money would be better spent in other area's on improving this team. I think it is worth it to go with the WR group that we have another year since we do have 2 young guys that do show promise.
