  1. Is the cap relevant? If we cut Kelsay and earn no cap savings, but pay $4M fewer dollars in salary, under our system, that's just as good, right? If we're under the cap, and going to be under the cap, and the budget is determined by total, single-season cash outlays, there's no cap magic anywhere.

No it's not that relevant. Not the way RW does things. At the end of the day, it is the bottom line of RW's pocket that he cares about, not the cap.

  2. What the heck's wrong with Derek Fine? Why couldn't he be our Dallas Clark? They have almost the exact same build. Fine looked very good when he was called upon. Both players had just 1 touchdown scored in their rookie season. Why couldn't Fine be the answer at tight end? I see no reason why he couldn't be a very good tight end of us. This team should give Fine the starting job and use the top draft selections for what is truly needed...a center, a defensive end, an outside linebacker and a defensive tackle. Give Fine the starting TE job and give Steve Johnson the starting #2 receiver job. I'm tired of the obsession over the tight end position on this board.

Who cares if your tired? The reason for the obsession on this board for a TE is because we havn't had a good one in over a decade, and even the one we had then was just decent. A good TE can make an ok offense into a good one.

Scaife was a very unheralded player for the Titans. He led the team in receptions, he led the team in third down receptions, and he helped keep drives alive.

As far as Fine is concerned, I am looking forward to seeing his progression this year, and having Fine and Scaife I think would be a good fit. Definitely better then what we have.

  3. This is good for the Bills... They most likely won't be able to have anyone come in and do as well as Brett did last year for them. He had a better year last year then I thought he was going to, and he ended up being a plus for them as opposed to some of the other options they had.

  4. 11 beautiful catches. Did you see those 2 catches he had for touchdowns in the last two games? Thing of beauty!

Slant pattern at the goal line. When was the last time we had a reciever that could do that?

Watch out!!! Stevey is gonna surpise people next year.

    Sorry, I got carried away

I do think that he will have:

    60 catches 7 tds in year 2.

  5. Playing for jauron would be ahit to their ego. Whoever comes to Buffalo is doing so just for the paycheck.

thank god that successful people in this world don't think the way you do.

the reason other than a paycheck would be about their personal pride and their motivation to succeed at what they do. To prove to people and themselves that they can achieve and lead and be winners.

  6. I just bring up the qb position & it never being franchised because the number is so much higher then any other position.

But if the market dictates that a team is only going to pay Cassel 8-10 million per year, what can the NFLPA really do about it? I suppose they could blackball his agent or tell them play the one year out in NE if they do not get close to the 1yr franchise tender. If I was cassel I would tell the NFLPA to go f*ck themselves. I got to be honest, if I am a GM there is a real short list of qbs that I would be willing to throw 14 mill per year. That list starts & ends with P Manning/a healthy Tom Brady, & that list sure as hell does not have matt Cassel on it even though I think he is a little better then some people on this board are giving him credit for.

your probably right, if you calculate his value in comparison to other qb's and what they are getting payed, it doens't justify a $14 Million dollar a year contract in my view. But every team has a distinct situation, and if you calculate his value to the Patriots on an Insurance Basis for Brady then the 14 Mill per year could be more justifiable. Think about it for a second, You know that in his first year as a qb that he led them to a 11-5 record with some pretty impressive stats. So it is not ridiculous to think that in his second year that he could have even better numbers right? So if Brady were to go down or not be ready, then what are the odds that the Patriots could find someone better then Cassell to replace him? Not good I would imagine, and maybe not even good enough to get to the playoffs.

You have to believe that Even with Cassell in there next year as the qb if it played out that way, that they have a really good chance at being a playoff team, and possibly a super bowl contender. I mean look what they did to the Cards at the end of the season, and look at the way the Patriots were playing at the end of the season.

So on a cost to value insurance basis, the cost of helping to insure that you have a superbowl contending team for $14 Million is definitely worth it.

So comparatively speaking against other qb's he's not worth the money, but for $14 Million for the Patriots it is more justified. Not to mention the ridiculous trade offers that could be thrown there way for teams in desperate need of their next "franchise" quarterback.

  7. Cool. Thanks for that post.

    I love this part:

"The Bills are 10-0 when Edwards has a passer rating of at least 80.0 (including 7-0 in 2008) in games he has at least 20 pass attempts."

That is a very telling stat to me. I says that Trent must stay healthy and start all 16. It says that if Peters is happy and ready, the O-Line is rolling and Trent stays vertical and can complete passes. It says that by having a good ground game and being a run-first offense, we can take pressure off Trent and give him an easier time in the pass game with defenses cheating up.

QB is the most important position in football. I'm a pro-Trent guy and think he's the future. For those of you who aren't, like it or not, Trent is our QB and as Trent goes, so do the Bills.

We need to get Peters locked up and in camp, get the center position solved, unleash Beastmode and Coe more often, and bring in a pass catching TE. Do that and with some defensive upgrades, we're playoff bound.

I'm with you a %100 on everything you said.

Establish our offense through the Run with Beastmode and Jackson, keep Trent healthy, lock up Peters, get a good pass catching TE and some defensive upgrades.

  8. The Cover-2 got an unnaturally good reputation from the Colts, where a conservative, wait-for-a-mistake defense was perfect. Peyton Manning was (almost) never going to make a mistake, so you just had to wait for the other guy to, and try not to give up touchdowns.

Then with the Bears and the Bucs, you had the talent to take advantage of every single mistake. A missed block was a Warren Sapp sack, a an overthrow was a John Lynch pick. And in Minnesota, the other successful Cover-2 scheme, you have the best defensive line in the league providing enough smother to let the DBs really get some picks.

The Bills chose a defensive system that required an excellent defensive line, landed a bust in John McCargo, and then gave up on the position in the draft. Chris Ellis, CJ Ah You, and Anthony Hargrove amount to the total Jauron investment in the DE position, and they combined for 0 snaps last season.

    agreed

It's not that the tampa 2 system is the problem, it is the personnel that we are lacking. We don't have the DE's to make this sytem work properly. We don't apply enough pressure. Look at Tampa, they had Simeon Rice and Warren Sapp, The Indianapolis colts had Freeny, The Vikings have the Pat and Kevin Williams and Jared Allen, The Bears had Tank Johnson Tommy Harrison (who was playing as good as any dt at that time) Alex Brown Ogunluye and not too shabby Linebackers in Urlacher and Briggs.

There is a common denominator there that we are lacking. Defensive line pressure.

These Defenses worked well because of the personnel. So there is nothing wrong with the system, we just need more passrushers.

  9. It was a good decision to franchise Cassell. Can you say insurance.

IF Brady, and that is a big IF, is not able to play or gets reinjured, they have a guy that can come in and play at a high level in their offensive system. If Brady were to get reinjured and was not able to play and they didn't have Cassell, then I think it's obvious that they would have some major hurdles to overcome. Cassell knows the system he has been with them a few years and it would be very difficult to find someone that could step in and be more successful than him. So $14 Million to insure that you get good qb play for a surefire playoff team with realistic aspirations to go to the big show in their view was worth it.

Not to mention that by franchising him, if someone desperate of qb that is looking to reach, offers them something ridiculous on draft day, then they always do have that option to trade him. And we all know that no team ever reaches for a percieved franchise qb

  10. Q. Why are you so belligerent?

    A. You're a jackass

    B. You watch too much ESPN and don't have an original thought

    C. You rant about fair pay, when no one said anything about contract negotiations

    D. You're a jackass

    E. All of the above

    listen armchair,

as far as having an original thought, well i suggest you read my posts again, if you fail to see the argument behind it, then you'll never see it. About fair pay, Thats what the whole argument was based on, HELLLOOOOOOOO!! As far being beligerent, I didn't call anyone here a dumbass, I said dumbass posts about Peters statistics on giving up stats based on one year. Lots of good players in this league have had bad years that went on to do great things. Peters has proven that he can play at a high level, and if we would of decided to have paid him what he is worth, we wouldnt even be having this argument today.

Anyone who says, "lets wait for him to play well in 2009 before we open up contract talks again" really is just living in fantasy armchair gm land. In this league you pay based on potential not reward. Why do you think Matt Ryan gets paid more than Brady, cuz he's better? noooooo, cuz there is a dream that maybe he will be better or as good. If we don't pay Peters his real worth, than someone else will, and guess what? He'll be a probowl LT for some team, and we will be stuck searching for an entire decade for someone to replace him.

    Thats the reality

  11. We see where that got him, don't we all. Why didn't he do that this year? Fair question.

I'm not happy with his production last year, I don't think anyone is. His agent gave him advice, and it ended up being bad advice. It go no one closer to where they needed to be. All I am saying is that Peters was going on his proven agent's advice, so of course he listens to him. At the end it backfired him.

It still doesn't take away the fact that he is a probowl calibur LT and that in today's game, you pay to play. You don't pay, well you saw what the consequences were. You got a player who didn't come into camp and showed up the day before the game and it took him half the season to get in shape.

You have to pay him what he is worth. He wasn't even the 3rd highest paid Offensive Line man on his team. Are you telling me, that if you worked in an office and you had 2 other guys in your office, that you know bring more value to the company than these other two, and you know you can not get a pay raise for another 3 years, and they are getting paid double what you are, that you are gonna just be the good little boy scout and just suck it up for the company.

I would hope not! He deserves more, and I am willing to bet anyone, that someone will pay him his true worth, and that he will return to top notch probowl calibur football again. If we don't pay him, someone else GAURANTEED will pay him top $$.

  12. Also another thing.

All these dumb ass stats of Peters Giving up more sacks than anyone.

I got one here for you

    Season Team Passing Rushing Fumbles

G GS Comp Att Pct Yds Avg TD Int Sck SckY Rate Att Yds Avg TD FUM Lost

    2006 Pittsburgh Steelers 15 15 280 469 59.7 3,513 7.5 18 23 46 280 75.4 32 98 3.1 2 5 2

This is what Rothlesburger did in 2006

What I am assuming is that by giving these sack stats against Peters, you are justifying that he doesn't deserve more money and that we should either get rid of him, trade him or just let him be pissed and have him sit out the season.

So based on the same logic, what Roethlesburger did in 2006, they should of just got rid of him right? I mean he had a 75.4 qb rating which is far lower than what Trent did this past year. He threw lots more Int's than TD's and gave up a shi$%t load of sacks with less than a 60 % accuracy.

They should of dropped the Bum!!

instead of doing that they payed him over $100 Million and they won a super bowl.

    What a bunch of dumbasses

Ya you guys are right, lets Let Peters walk away or trade him based on his one crappy season.

  13. He's under contract for the next two years.

You obviously live in LaLa land.

In today's game of football you play football players their percieved value or you suffer the consequences. Don't you get that!? To many people here just don't get it!

Peters is worth a lot more than $3.5 Mil a year. Of course his agent is gunning for more money, that is his freaking job. Give me a break, No wonder he fired his last agent. Think about it for a sec, if you are able to. Peters, ProBowl up and coming LT (footballs most coveted position after QB), getting payed well below the LT average, and third most on the Bills O-Line with over 3 years left on his contract (going into 2008). What do you do? "Be a team player and good boyscout" and lose $20 Million dollars. Or do you hire one of the best agents in all of football and he advises you to play hardball. DUHHHHH!!!!!

    You listen to the agent!!!

So now what do we have? A disgruntled probowl LT, who wants what is rightfully his! FAIR PAY!!! Nothing more, nothing less.

You pay the man what he should get, you will have a happy player, and we get a happy Probowl LT that will Protect our QB's blind side and pancake DE's in the ground game for the next 6-7 years.

But of course, "smart People" like you and Senator don't see that.
