  1. I don't think that it's because Kelsay is bad. I think the problem is that he isn't great, and commands a high salary for a backup DE when we already have WIlliams, Anderson, Merriman and Moore. Marrone just showed his willingness to cut less cap impactful players in areas where we were already frighteningly thin so it seems somewhat mystifying that Kelsay isn't part of the movement.
  2. Agreed. McGee has lost his step. It is a little baffling to me that we're willing to get rid of these two and Kelsay isn't going yet. We have a lot of dead wood, but I'm not seeing a ton of room for replacements.
  3. Well, I guess one thing we have to say is that next year won't be same old, same old.Of course, this does beg the question of "How the hell are we going to fill all of these holes?" There's no way that we're going to be able to fill all holes with the draft, and we don't have a ton to spend on free agency.
  4. I've heard of him...F5!!! But seriously, it may be worth looking into. He's not the prototypical #1 wideout by any means, but we're so thin at WR, and we won't be bringing Jones back that he might be worth it, warts and all. EDIT: NOPE!!! I read the article, and they were talking about a $10 million per year to extend him. Considering the holes to fill all over, and his attitude, it's not worth it.
  5. I agree. I think Spiller proved last season that he's the future at running back. Am I happy to have Freddy back? Hell yes, especially if he can return to form from two seasons ago. But he's going to be 32 by next season, and keeps getting hurt. He said he was ready to go last season as well, and it didn't appear to be true, Still, if Marrone and Hackett have half a brain between them (which apparently Chan didn't), they'll be spending the offseason drawing up plays where they can use both Spiller and Jackson well together.
  6. Eeek. That's a bit less than what we were expecting. Still, it does my heart good to see the Jets at the bottom of that list. Maybe we can peel off a couple of their defensive players..after we re-sign Byrd and Levitre.
  7. I'm kind of going "eh, no great loss". I mean, I don't hate the guy but I don't think anyone was standing up and saying "Yes, we should invest heavily to keep Donald Jones." As a Kool-Aid drinker, this is making me think that we're going to be going after a veteran WR, either through the waiver wire, trade or free agency. We have enough positions to fill that if we are willing to let another person walk, we have to have some plan in order to fill it. We would likely have needed to draft another WR anyway, and I don't see us striking gold twice, especially after needing to fill pressing needs of a QB and a major upgrade at LB.
  8. I think it's worth bearing in mind that we have, on more than one occasion, moved heaven and earth to get a quarterback as our second pick overall. Sometimes, this hasn't worked out (JP Losman) but there is one big exception: Jim Kelly.
  9. This puts as as the team with the 7th highest cap room, and puts us on the top end of the middle of the pack (yes, I'm mixing metaphors) so, really, there is no excuse for failing to resign both Byrd and Levitre. With the expected cuts of Kelsay and McGee, I could see us signing McKelvin at rock bottom prices (who is going to pay much more) and I would love to see Buddy play the waiver wire one more time to bring in a half decent WR before the draft.
  10. I feel like I need to have a machine playing the "wa-waaaaaa" sound effect on a loop here. Maybe he's backup material with what we have now but I'd rather see what we can do with Glenn.
  11. Agreed. This has "Jets" written all over it.
  12. I doubt that Byrd's slot is in line for an upgrade but I bet that the rest of the DB's could use an upgrade. After reading the description of the 3-3-5 defense (the 3-4 variation of the Nickel) I think might have an idea of what Pettine might be trying to run: To me that sounds similar to what Pettine was talking about by saying "not a true 4-3, or 3-4" and bringing constant pressure.
  13. Having seen his highlight reel, I would be a lot more comfortable with Wilson than with Nassib. You want to talk about how his hands are too small? Maybe, but he can still throw the ball on the money. It's insane, watching those throws after years of Lossman, Edwards and Fitz.
  14. #Bills DC Mike Pettine: "With pass happy league, our 3rd down [nickel] defense will likely be our base package."@WGRZ pic.twitter.com/ciUWvGTT Interesting. Who would we be putting where? If we're basing everything around the nickel, we'd probably need to sink some extra talent into our DBs.
  15. I wouldn't be surprised if we bring him back, We could get him rather cheap and he's quality backup material now.
  16. According to Scout.com he's 6-3, 215 pounds and runs a 4.4 He would probably be a lower round pick simply because he's only coming in at one year of experience but man he has a gift for getting open, and he can block. If he's there after we address QB and LB I would say "all hands on deck" Get 'er done Buddy!
  17. Figures that it's the guy with the Phish logo who says that Of course, if the incident causes his stock to drop to, say, the third round then I would be all for it. That way, we'd have two of the famed LSU CB's.
  18. Looks like he threw one deep... Man, I know there's a better football pun in there somewhere
  19. Seems like a phenomenal trade for both sides. The Jets immediately get a passable QB and can afford to release Sanchez and Tebow to soften the cap hit while avoiding the inevitable Revis holdout and deal reshuffling. SF gets to end the QB controversy and acquires a star player for their DB corps. And if I were Alex Smith, I would request to be released as well.
  20. It would if we were going on a "Suck for Manziel" run. Of course, I would be jubilant if we took a stub LB in the first, Nassib in the second, with both playing up to All Pro levels their first year. In fact, this is what I prefer, but I was trying to play devil's advocate.
  21. Ok, I will say one thing: If there WAS a Andrew Luck, RGIII or even Tannehill ready right now, I think we would be in pretty good shape to risk everything. What would I say to you guys if I said: we're going to have one more year of Fitz, while tendering long term contracts to Byrd and Levitre, while continuing to break in Gilmore, Glenn and Dareus. We're going to have a year where our players adjust to a new scheme, and have some problems with it, just like we did when G Williams and Chan came onboard. With that, next year Johnny Manziel becomes draft eligable and we risk the farm on him to take a Heismann winner, What would you guys say to that?
  22. Would I like to have him? Hell yes. It would immediately solve the CB problem and give us one of the best tandems in the NFL. That said, do I expect it to happen? No. 1) Since it's a trade, the Jets would set the asking price much higher for a divisional foe. It would make more sense to find an offer out of division, or even the conference. 2) Unless his deal was restructured, there would be immediate problems with the cap, especially if we want to fix other positions. Add on the factor of his contract being up in a year and keeping him would be costly. 3) He doesn't want to leave NY. Sending him to Buffalo, where he would have to play with the team that he wants to be on twice a year does not bode well. That said, maybe he would like the familiar face of Pettine (I really don't know) and having him be on any team other than one in our division is a plus. If I would want to make the trade...well, what do we think is fair? The Jets are only one pick behind us, so they would likely love to pick 8 & 9. I would only be for it, if somehow we could trade back to late first round, where I would feel comfortable picking up a QB.
  23. This time last year I kept thinking, "Man, if I'm Chan Gailey I'm sitting down and figured how best to use Fred Jackson and CJ Spiller since they're the most dynamic players on this team." Quite obviously, this never happened. But now with Marrone and Hackett, they are going to be bringing in a new style of offense. (Oh for the love of crap please let them bring in a new style of offense) We still have Spiller and Jackson on contract, so we can keep them for a while if we so choose. I've waxed eloquent about their relative strengths and weaknesses before, but now that we have a whole offseason with a brand new point of view coming in I'm curious to see what people will think. Personally, I'm hoping for a two back system and if anyone knows where this has successfully been run (either in the pros or in college) I would love to hear about it, especially since it looks very likely that we'll have a rookie QB under center for us.
  24. So, so Bo is faster. This might piss some people here off but...so what? Pure speed isn't the end all be all. In fact, let's point to what made Spiller great last season: he stopped trying to constantly go to the outside. He got more patient with his blocks, so that once he had an opening he could get that wonderful acceleration.
  25. OK! Enough with debating the existence of God on here. If the most brilliant philosophers and scientists can't hash it out, I doubt we're going to on a football forum. I'm not going to lie, I'm not a fan of people screaming their faith in such a public way, and any god that cares more about who wins a football game more than billions of sick, starving and dying people has F@*&%D UP PRIORITIES. But I think people are going to be more forgiving to Lewis, because whether you think he got away with a crime, the man is an excellent football player. And Tebow is a below average football player.
