While it certainly gives some historical perspective, I think the crux of it is that most people find it disrespectful (because people don't know the historical background that you linked to). I don't think it is ever written with malicious intent, but never-the-less it has a bit of a secular feel to it and thus tends to aggravate thhose who actually celebrate the holiday beyond buying a bunch of crap and shoveling it out.

Update: As I look at my "View Recorded History" it says those games were not recorded because some "modified the wishlist that requested it". Well, I checked the settings and they look right to me. I see no changes. It then said it wouldn't record the Bills game because there wasn't enough space (depsite the fact that I have 13 suggested shows waiting to be recorded over with my requested programming, plus some movies that could be deleted if space was needed. WTF is up with this?

After years of flawless service - it has missed 3 out of the last 4 Sabres games. It missed the Marv Levy show this morning and the Bills are not scheduled to record. I have a wishlist using "Buffalo" as the keyword and "sports" as the category. Is DTV not categorizing shows these as "sports" anymore?

Although maybe that is all technically correct, what small fraction of a fraction of a percentage of people actually know any that stuff? Of all the times you have read "x-mas" you could probably count on one hand the number of people who would recite anything from that wiki entry.

yeah, I'm cancelling tonight. 2 hours of sleep last night and I have a funeral to be at 9:00am. Also, they put out an incremental upgrade that messed up the skin I had semi-ready. So, I have been doing skin edits all night. When that is semi-presentable - then I will upgrade. Probably Friday night. Sorry... I can hardly keep my eyes open right now.

I didn't corrupt any databases (this time). The indexes just weren't updating fast enough to be done by the morning. I have already made the necessary changes, I believe, and I'll probably try again tonight. I figure by that time you'll be pronouncing that we will lose every game 'til eternity for some reason or other.

we need to do this for security reasons, although I suspect a playoff game would be pretty hard on us performance wise. We'll see how this weekend goes. Learned a little bit about "Repair with keycache" this morning. It would have taken days to make updates to the tables (although I have someone's anecdotal evidence on how to avoid this situation). As it stood, it took 7.5 hours just duplicate the original database. Oh well, I'll try again this week. Sorry for the pointless downtime.
