Screw the racism bit, and the faux apologists that claim, "this happens to everyone that mouths off to a cop." If so, where is your indignation? I should be able to mouth off to a cop who comes on my property due to a false report. Whether it is in my house or on my porch, this should be my right. If I am blasting porn that the neighbors can hear, that is different, but raising my voice and telling a man off who is on my property? Well, it may not be legal anymore, but it should be. It's like a civic pastime there. I think what would of not been "stupid" was to answer the question more like "I don't know enough about what had happened, to opinionate on that matter" no matter how you slice it, his comment did more harm for him than what he said. No dude, if Newt yelled at that cop, and said "you are discriminating against me because I'm a republican" and "do you know who I am?" and then continued to ignore the cop for doing his job, then followed him outside and was beligerent and continued to spout out bull sh-- like "I'll talk to your momma", I would of laughed my asss off and said what a frickin douche bag, good for the cop that arrested his asss, and it would of been funny. But since this douchebag Gates played the race card, everything is much more sensitive and now this guy, the police officer has to unnecessarily defend himself from people like you, Dean and others. The police report says I was engaged in loud and tumultuous behavior. That’s a joke. Because I have a severe bronchial infection which I contracted in China and for which I was treated and have a doctor’s report from the Peninsula hotel in Beijing. So I couldn’t have yelled. I can’t yell even today, I’m not fully cured. It escalated as follows: I kept saying to him, ‘What is your name, and what is your badge number?’ and he refused to respond. I asked him three times, and he refused to respond. And then I said, ‘You’re not responding because I’m a black man, and you’re a white officer.’ That’s what I said. He didn’t say anything. He turned his back to me and turned back to the porch. And I followed him. I kept saying, “I want your name, and I want your badge number.” It looked like an ocean of police had gathered on my front porch. There were probably half a dozen police officers at this point. The mistake I made was I stepped onto the front porch and asked one of his colleagues for his name and badge number. And when I did, the same officer said, ‘Thank you for accommodating our request. You are under arrest.’ And he handcuffed me right there. It was outrageous. My hands were behind my back I said, ‘I’m handicapped. I walk with a cane. I can’t walk to the squad car like this.’ There was a huddle among the officers; there was a black man among them. As long as YOU are on your property, your porch for Christ's sake, I think you are still OK here. He wasn't violent, didn't pose a threat (at least not according to the report, which many seem to want to take at face value), no complaints from the neighbors, etc. He was a pissed off guy yelling on his porch, mid-day. The cop seemed to be mostly concerned the neighbors were gawking. (Turn up the Eagles, the neighbors are listening.) As has been noted, that's SOP in some neighborhoods. I don't have any indignation. I expect people who mouth off to cops to get taken in. Is it right? No. Is it pretty standard? In my experience it is. There were plenty of avenues for the good professor to voice his displeasure that would have been far more productive without him ending up humiliated. He chose to basically dive into the dumpster instead of taking the high road. I think it's really sad that educator couldn't control himself well enough to "teach" this officer what he thought was so wrong instead of escalating the confrontation. The President did pretty much the same thing. "I don't have all the facts but let me go ahead and open my mouth any way."
