Round 1, Pick 11: AARON MAYBIN, DE, Penn State

Recommended Posts

Erik Flowers issue was motivation not phyical attributes. The draft is filled with people of like size and builds. The NFL is all about heart, and will power. It has nothing to do with physcial attributes. HOw many people who are considered undersized excell or guys who have all the physical attributes but bust.

I don't know anything about this guy to be honest. I saw a few highlight reels. HOwever he has to be a upgrade over Ellison who can't rush the passer at all. It was a position that needed to be filled so I like it.

People also need to consider Kelsey. By reports they tried to trade him but it looks like there weren't any takers. The DE position is packed why add another DE who can't play LB. The Bills play a 4-3 defense. They need someone who can cover a large section of the field.

I was surprised by the Maybin pick, even though most of the experts put him in the top 15.

I'm not going to get pissed off or overjoyed until I see how he plays.

But RE: Orakpo, everything I've read about him says the same thing: They question his passion for the game, his will, and his consistency.

they got a pass rusher although he can play LB on 1st and second and play DE on 3rd downs

Im looking at it from a glass-half-full light

they did address DE so i am semi -happy

lol. they semi-addressed DE. Sort of like they semi-addressed the HC. But we're good enough to survive another semi-productive 1st round pick, right?

Living in Michigan I saw him play plenty in many of those big ten games. Mayock was right about him. He definitely has a fast first step, but he can't play against the run. I saw him get blown up on running plays by TEs and driven off the play. Imagine what Jake Long is going to do to him on running plays. We'll be playing defense with ten men because he'll be driven out of the play.

He will ONLY play on 3rd downs...He's simply a pass rush specialist....not that that is bad because the Bills couldn't put the heat on last year on 3rd down...

What about Dwight Freeney, 6-1 268....I suspect that Maybin will add some strength and bulk as he becomes involved with an NFL caliber strength and conditioning program. We needed a speed rusher who can get to the QB. We already have two DE's who can do nothing but support the run. I think Maybin will be able to come in immidiately on passing downs and contribute without a ton of pressure on his shoulders (assuming Kelsay is still on the roster).

Oh good grief...again. This is even worse. He has ZERO experience in dropping into coverage as a linebacker. Unless they're shifting to a 3-4, this is nuts.

Bottom line, athletes are athletes, I'm not making any judgements until I see him play however if we did draft him as a linebacker I'm kind of curious why we didn't take Cushing or Orakpo at LB.

McCargo, Losman..............Maybin?

I can't believe that they left Orakpo.......

Yeah, I was being ironic...forgot to add a " :worthy: "

I like the fact that they addressed the D line...but the player doesn't thrill me. All I really know is what I read in all the pre-draft hype though...so I will defer some...but I am not rushing out to ordera an Aaron Maybin jeresy just yet...it feels like it would only hang in the closet next to the Erik Flowers jersey I never wore! :worthy:

He's 6'4", 21 years old and 250lbs. He'll get much bigger..

He put on 15-20 pounds for the draft. He played at Penn St. at around 230-4.

This guy reminds me of Corey Moore, only taller and less experienced.

Chris Ellis just got his ticket punched.

Where do the Bills play this guy? He's being billed as a one trick pony and 3rd down specialist. Do they move Schobel to the inside on 3rd and long and let Maybin rush off the edge?

I felt much better about the Whitner pick. He wasn't 8th overall caliber, but he was a good, safe pick. Maybin? This is extremely risky.

The Bills are "only a player or two away"...they can afford to take chances.... :worthy:

Overall Football Traits

Production 2 A third-year sophomore who declared with two years of eligibility remaining. He redshirted in 2006 and played as a backup and on special teams in 2007, when he notched 12 total tackles, including four sacks. Had a breakout season in 2008, when he started all 13 games and recorded 49 tackles, including 19 TFL. He also led the Big Ten with 12 sacks.

Height-Weight-Speed 3 Adequate height for a DE. Has added bulk and appears capable of adding 10-15 more pounds to his frame. Likely to settle in as a rush-LB in the NFL. Is in great physical condition (just four-percent body fat) and displays excellent straight-line speed.

Durability 1 Played in all 25 games during his two seasons of eligibility at PSU. Appears to be a flexible, healthy and durable athlete.

Character 1 Very mature for his young age. Had to grow up in a hurry after mother died from birth complications when Aaron was six years old. He is a natural leader both vocally and by example. Non-stop motor is infectious. Great football character. Not aware of any off-the-field issues.

Defensive End specific Traits

Agility/Quickness 1 Exceptionally quick, even for his type of hybrid DE/OLB. Shows excellent agility and closing burst to the quarterback. Possesses top-shelf body control, as well

Strength/Toughness 3 He is lean and must add bulk to frame. Is light in the rear and shows marginal ability to stack at the line of scrimmage when teams run at him. However, don't mistake small for weak or soft in his case. He is aggressive and feisty. He displays good initial pop and adequate upper-body power. And he certainly does not back down from a one-on-one physical battle.

Instincts 2 A natural playmaker with a knack for jarring the ball loose. Very good snap anticipation and awareness as a pass rusher. Should only continue to improve in this area with more experience.

Pass Rusher 2 Quickest first step of all the edge rushers in the 2009 class. Fluid double moves. Bends the edge tightly. Shows quick hands and strong enough upper body to keep bigger blockers off his pads. Still developing his array of pass rush moves. Gets caught too frequently trying to spin out of double-team attention and needs work in that regard.

Run Stopper 3 Spent a lot of time last season working head-up on the TE as PSU's strong-side DE. Shows discipline with backside containment. Stays low and fights to keep his positioning. Can stack versus most TE's but gets washed out too easily by bigger OT's when they get into his pads.
