Watching SNL tonight, and I have a question

Is there anyone (in professional showbiz) less talented than this guy? Even with the obvious use of a modulator, he still can't sing on key. This mook has to be the biggest fraud in the music business. Yet, the stupid and undemanding public eats this crap up. I don't understand how he could con anyone into giving him a recording contract.

I'd call him a bum, but that would be an insult to talented bums all over the world.

It's really sad to me. Music is nothing but image these days. With the technology that's out there, they can turn a no talent hack into a superstar with a soundboard, so why worry about finding real musicians? I'm sick and tired of seeing these "singers" who don't know how to sing and these "bands" that don't even play instruments.

Just curious... Do you know anything of Kanye West outside of what you've seen on SNL tonight?

Also just curious... Is there any chance that you would have liked his performance even if he DID sing 'on-key'?

I might not have been a real fan of his performance, even if he sang on key, but I wouldn't have been enraged, and started this thread. I understand that there are going to be musicians, and musical styles, that don't appeal to me. Still, the idea that someone with no musical talent, is pushed down the throat of the public, by the major record labels, and radio stations, disgusts me.

While I also despise other manufactured acts like Britney, the Spice Girls or kitty Cat Dolls, even they have some marketable skills that hint at "talent": some dancing ability, obvious sex appeal, etc. It is disgusting that they get passed off on the public as "musicians", but at least I understand what is getting sold.

I have seen Kanye on other shows, as well as on SNL. I was amused by his "George Bush hates Black people remark"...seriously, I thought that was pretty funny. But, I have yet to see him display anything that resembles "talent" of any kind. He can't sing, and his "dancing" is a joke. Christ, I have a better sense of rhythm and far more soul that that guy.

Now, Puffy Combs (pick a nickname) is also a performer with limited talent. At least he surrounds himself with talent. As marginal as P-Diddy may be, as a performer, he is James Brown, Otis Redding and Elvis Presley rolled together, when compared to Kanye.

Of course, IMO.

I am interested to hear what MUSICAL talent people think Kanye brings to the table.

Just curious, are you trying to subtley imply that Deano is a racist?

I never thought of that. I figured he was implying that I am an old fuddy-duddy that doesn't like this particular style of music. At least I hope that's what he was inferring.

But this was one of the funnier SNL's in a while. Fred Arnisen's Gov. Patterson was a scream.

PTR

Indeed. Very funny. Obama and Patterson have finally given Armisen something to do that isn't totally annoying.

i was actually thinking "snob" but both you and our resident chef seem to wear that label with pride...and rightfully so

he is kind of a tool, but I do like that song..I think it is called "Stronger"

But see, even if one of his songs is catchy, it isnt "his". The song is popular because of Daft Punk and whoever blended DP and Kanye together. Even if you enjoy listening to Stronger, is there anything in there that implies musical merit on the part of Kanye? The days when popular musicians wrote and sang/played their own songs is over I fear.

You know he's not a singer, right?

I hear you, but I still like that song as well.

I was listening to a song the other day. It was a Hall & Oates song ("Say it isn't so?") and it had different lyrics. I was thinking "damn, now they're not just sampling bits of the songs, they're using the whole song and adding different lyrics!

as a performer he is a RAPPER, first and foremost, and i give him props for attempting to expand his sound and talents into other forms of music (singing). as an old daft punk fan, im not crazy about him "making" a song from a song already written. but hey, at the same time, daft punk is getting paid WELL for the use of their hook, so... no harm, no foul.

he has written a good amount of catchy and well written songs. he was a breath of fresh air in a rap scene that fell into a rut of only talking about the car theyre driving, the champagne theyre drinking and the money theyre spending. kanye came onto the scene and not only wrote about "real" things, but went so far as speaking out against writing songs about the same ol BS that doesnt really matter in life anyways.

he can be a real prick sometimes (see: award show tantrums) but i think half of that is just smart PR work on his side. a rapper keeping his name in the news without having to shoot someone. not bad.
