That's the beautiful thing about America. You can say whatever you want, even if you don't know what you're talking about

Man, oh man. You guys are such agist!

In fact, Gates speech was one of the few aspects of the weekend that didn't make me cringe. I was referring more to the bombastic pageantry of death and subjugation I was drowning in.

I'd also like to know when the "real-world" starts. I'm not in college, I've been out for several years. And I'd love to know how many of you guys who discredit academia would hire someone without a college degree. But, since studies, critical discourse with experts, long thorough research papers, and reading academic journals don't mean a hill a beans to all you "real-worlders" I guess there's no point in me mentioning that one of my degrees is in international relations from a university which is consistently ranked one of the best in the country. Please, carry on as if I have no idea what I'm talking about, and have never given any thought to the US military before I offer my opinion.

EDIT: and speaking of shooting your mouth about things you know nothing about- my parents don't pay for sh-- for me. They'd love to, but I've refused their money on many occasions since graduating. :wallbash: Bunch of ASSumers here, I'll tell ya.

The service academies are steeped in tradition. You may not like it, but that's military tradition.

Like I said, I'm a civie so I don't really understand it either

I'm one of the few where I work that has a degree

my degrees is in international relations from a university which is consistently ranked one of the best in the country.

International Relations :w00t: That's a productive degree <_<

Linking the "how many would hire somebody without a college degree" and "International Relations degree" points:

I'm not directly involved with hiring, but I suspect that we'd hire somebody without a degree and experience over you

I'm sorry, wasn't this a thread about free-speech?

Precisely who the hell do you think is, in large part, responsible for the fact that you actually have free speech.

That's right. The big, expensive, lives-ruining joke that you scoff at.

Looks like all the men in uniform fanboys are out in full force in this thread!

Don't worry. I'm sure some women will show up soon so you have someone to take a swing at.

The irony is, I believe the woman that hung the flag actually did it out of Patriotism. She thinks the Big Cats of the world have taken over the country....and she just may be right. I fully understand getting riled up, especially being a service member....but I see where she is coming from. Maybe in poor taste, but I bet that chick would pick up a .22 and shoot the wiggleworm from between Big Cat's pelvis without much coaxing if it came to that.

The best selling flag on Amazon.com for the year....."Don't Tread On Me". What's that tell you?

So I'm returning from a day of work at 29 Palms and my training partner Lee decides to take a detour on the way home to show me The Mission Inn in Riverside, CA. It's an historic hotel he's recommended for my wife and I to stay at and wanted to give me a brief tour. We walk through the hotel and on the way toward the freeway home we detour through a beautiful neighborhood of early 1900's homes. I notice a house that has the flag hung upside down and do a double take. I show Lee, who is a retired Marine LtCol and he stops the truck and says let's go talk to them and fix it.

So we knock on the door of the house and a lady comes to the door and acknowledges that the flag is that way on purpose. She goes on to state that the flag can be hung upside down in times of distress and she feels our nation is in great danger. Lee, my partner is visibly upset and argues that we're both retired Marines who fought for her fight to do that and feel its unacceptable. She responds that we just elected a President who feels the Constitution of the US is deeply flawed and that she feels our country is heading rapidly toward socialism. She was kind, but firm in her expression. After some bantering between them I basically moved Lee of off the porch and toward the vehicle.

Anyway, I did some quick research and this is becoming a more common expression of distress for many Americans. At this moment I'm not exactly sure how I feel about it. As someone who has fought and had brothers die defending the flag and what it stands for, I'm a bit offended, but I've got to respect her right to express where she see our nation going.

Would you be taking it as well as you are right now if it was a lefty during the Bush administration? I think you'd be writing about how the "libtards" are so full of crap.

IMO, the flag is much less important than the Constitution. You're not fighting for the flag for you're fighting for the Constitution and if more people realized that a lot of the crap that happens on both sides would be taken more seriously. A flag burning would piss me off less than a Constitution burning.

Getting P.O.'d at these people is exactly what they want. Just ignore them. If it didn't draw a crowd they'd stop doing it.

I know, I've read your posts. <_<

Could it be that those who respect the military far outnumber those who don't? You have to separate the military from the ass heads who tell them where to go and what to do.

There are a lot of idiots in this country.

I am nearly positive you wouldn't have that attitude if it was a reversal of political thought. If you knew someone who did that at the beginning of Bush's term and still had it that way what would you do?

I don't disagree and maybe wasn't clear in my post. My buddy Lee was much more fired up and I tried to explain her POV to him. She absolutely was flying it out of Patriotism. That's why I posted that I'm conflicted about it. My first instinct is to be offended but it seems to me that more people are waking up to the reality of where our country is headed (and that is not just directed at Obama).

Also, I wasn't 100% comfortable knocking on her door when Lee suggested it. I do respect an individual's right to protest without being harassed. I was the peacemaker in the encounter and tried to express to both parties that I think we had similar feelings. In hindsight, I probably should've been more thorough in my initial post.

Right, because I'm young, I don't understand anything. I forgot.

I have spent a great deal of time on the grounds of the Naval Academy for athletic reasons, and I was invited to attend the 2007 USNA commissioning, and listened to Robert Gates give the commencement speech. I get it. And I DON'T BUY ANY OF IT.

IMO, our military is a big, expensive, lives ruining joke.

Man that's impressive! I beg your pardon. I didn't realize the vast depth of your military experience. <_<

I won't sit here and tell you the real world hasn't started for you because that's BS. Everyone has their own challenges and experiences at different ages.

I will tell you though, that when I was 24 I thought I knew everything. When I was 25, I realized what an idiot I was and now thought I knew everything. At 26, 27.......you get the idea.

I'm 29 and realized even though I've gone to college on my own dime, worked my way up from crappy jobs to a decent career, gotten married, bought a house, two new cars, deaths in the family, health scares......that I don't know sh--. It's not about intelligence, it's about wisdom and that's just not attainable at a young age. And the sooner you get that mindset, the sooner you'll stop sounding like the coddled little scholar you portray yourself as and the more your opinion will start being respected.

What an idiot....hey I'm a McCain guy but we lost, time to move on. Reminds me of all the aholes after the last election who said they would move to Canada when Bush won. I vowed then that I would never be a loser like that when a candidate I voted for lost. Nothing more lame than to trash your country over an election.

So why bother to be in the military to fight to protect Americans' rights if you get upset when someone exercises one of them? Particularly when her opinions seem to jibe with yours? If she is within the law, and if it gives her some solace (instead of spewing hatred and invective against "the other side"), who is it hurting? She meant no disrespect to the military. Perhaps it would help to remember that although the center of YOUR universe seems to be the military, many others go about their daily lives with different perspectives. Which is as it should e.

This was a fairly common practice during the Vietnam war as well. When things settle down, the flag will go right-side up again.

Exactly (blue is very inportant)!... Also:

I am not a shrink but, stayed at a Holiday Inn Express...:wallbash: IMO, It is all about control. When they are serving they feel like they are in control... Even if they almost 100% of the time being controlled by their superiors. Then when they get out into civilian world, they feel the need to control others... Some may feel quite helpless, then they fall back on the last bastion of control: They fought for our freedom.

I find the control angle quite pathetic. From this story, that need to control others while in the civilan world seems to not know the difference between current or past rank. Hopefully, most that served don't fall into this control trap.

WTF? Setting out to get the lady to turn the flag right side up? <_<:w00t:

I will surely get flamed for this.

Wow, there's a shocker. Exiled in Idiotville and NozzleNUT in synch. Whodathunkit?

While we're on the subject of control- does your supervisor know you're on the interweb and not manning the weedwacker like you're supposed to be? I'm sure there's some lock that needs painting while you're at it. Snap to boy!

Hey Grunt, you never did answer the only pertinent question in this thread. If it was 2000 or 2004 and she was a Gore or Kerry supporter would you still be defending her right to free speech, or would you be bashing the hell out of another "Wacked-Out Fuggin Liberal?"

C'Mon, you can be honest with us...

Yes! All my chores are done Pa!. No weedeating this time of the year... Saturdays are maint... Grease gates, check sump pits, etc... etc... Cold weather means exercise the generators/air compressors for the bubblers and make sure they are in good working order. Usually, under 50 degrees it isn't wise to paint. <_<:w00t:

See... "Control", you just can't help yourself!
