Friggen horse was in 2nd all da way round the track, till the last 100 yds or so. Then Buffalo could have become a destination. These days it seems like every rest stop has a casino, so Buffalo having one is no big deal. No one would travel to Buffalo to gamble when there are dozens of other places you can go. So that means the clientele you're likely to get are local people who shouldn't be gambling. Desperate people pissing away the social security checks. All you have to do is go to Fort Erie slots or Turning Stone or any casino and look at the people slinking out, staring at the ground because they were so sure that machine was going to pay off eventually. It's sad, and it's no magic bullet for any community. PTR I also agree with you to a point. From my prior posts also, I gamble quite a bit but I usually gamble playing college bball, football & dabble into baseball a little. As much as I gamble, I very rarely go to the Casino. Maybe twice a year. I stay away from there because I have news for everybody, you can not win there. The odds are so stacked against you that if you think about it, your chances of winning there are so minute that you might as well just take the money you were going to gamble with & give it to the first bum you see on the street. Went to the Casino, memorial weekend, lost my shirt. The only thing I would argue with is that there is nothing there right now. Would'nt a beautifull Casino at least on the outside look better then some empty buildings? That area was actually looking fairly promising, I was at this new bar (WJ Morrissey's) there a few weeks ago and it seemed like the area had some potential when the casino was finished... Y'know, I'm not surprised to see John LaFalce's hand in preventing this. that a$$hat did absolutely NOTHING for this area in his 20 something years in Congress. Why should that awesome streak of do-nothing-ness stop just because he's retired? FWIW, I'm not a gambler. I hate slot machines and I'm too cheap to patronize $5-$10 minimum gaming tables . . . As part of the "new" downtown Buffalo, this would have been an excellent addition. As for the casino only attracting locals, at least their money isn't going to Canada (or NF, or Salamanca, or Turning Stone, etc.). My $.02 . . . And maybe a strip club, just to pi$$ just about everyone off... But I still think they'll get this overturned somehow. I remember when Pataki tried to collect tax on cigarette's and gas from the Seneca's and they shut down the throughway by lighting tires on fire. I was commuting then and they were selling "No Pataxi" shirts on the reservation. They will do whatever it takes to get their way...
