That was kind of rhetorical.

Let's blame that POS Smerlas.

DRE Lee Roy Selmon

Notes: Nine seasons, seven Pro Bowls, four-time NFLPA NFC Defensive Lineman of the Year.

Sacks: 78

Tackles: 742

Forced fumbles: 28

Fumbles recovered: 10

DLE Howie Long

Notes: Thirteen seasons, eight Pro Bowls, 1989 NEA co-Defensive Player of the Year, 1985 NFL Alumni Defensive Lineman of the Year, NFLPA AFC Defensive Lineman of the Year (1984, 1985).

Sacks: 91½

Forced fumbles: 14

Bruce Smith: 19 seasons, 11 Pro-Bowls, twice NFL defensive player of the year

Sacks: 200

Tackles: 1224

Forced Fumbles: 46

Although I suppose one should subtract Bruce's numbers in the Redskins' 4-3, in which case it's 181 - 1111 - 40 in 16 seasons.

Yeah, great list. :nana:

That actually gets even more impressive when you consider that Smith made the Pro Bowl in 11 of his first 14 seasons. His last five were merely stringing out trying to chase White's sack record. Smith didn't do much in his last few seasons. Otherwise his totals are in blue parenthesis. That's ridiculously more impressive than Long's.

Bruce Smith didn't win the RE spot, but got the second most amount of votes for the LE??

Makes sense. :nana:

The voters probably forgot that the Bills played a 3-4 defense how else would the second most prominant pass rusher be overlooked?

Bruce Smith

Lets see 1985-1999 3-4 defense

11x prowbowl

12x all pro

4x AFC player of the year

2x NFL defensive player of the year

200 career sacks - 29 from washington 2000-2003=171 sacks from 85-99

Howie Long

81-93

8x prowbowl

6x all pro

2x NFL Defensive player of the year

1 x AFC Defensive player of the year

91.5 career stats

Sorry but it looks like bruce got the shaft to me unless there are 4-3 years I am over looking.

Too bad Bruce never had the talent for an on-air network gig. Long's TV work is the only thing that keeps him from being an afterthought among good-but-not-great ex-players.

Except for the Bruce problem, it's actually a good, informative piece.

Problem is, "the Bruce problem" throws all credibility out the window. Bills fan or not, the only DEs who can even be debated as being better than Bruce are Reggie White and Deacon Jones. Period. Howie Schlong??? Puh-lease. :nana:

Howie Long was a good, no...a very good DE, IMO. But, he does NOT belong in the HOF, and his name shouldn't have even come up, when making this list.

All-decade teams of the 1980s AND 1990s :nana:

It amazes me that PFW even thought that 'poll' was worth publishing.

It shouldnt even be a conversation..The best DE to play a 3 4 def is Bruce Smith..End of story

All-decade teams of the 1980s AND 1990s

So what's your point?? PFW's poll was on the best DE's EVER, not just the '80s and '90s. Long played for a "glamour" team and, while an above average DE, he couldn't hold the jock of either Reggie White or Bruce Smith, let alone Deacon Jones. :wallbash:

total joke.

when you look at DEs in the 3-4 since, you realize how insane bruce was.

when people tell me LT or white were better than bruce, they often bring up how each changed how their positions were played.

i point out that bruce played the position in way that no one before or since has ever been capable of playing. being lined up over the tackle for nearly every play in your career and still leading the nfl all time in sacks.

if smith were a 4-3 for his entire career he would have cracked 30 in more than one year. his playoff sack numbers would be redunk as well.
