Modrak to have his future freed up?

We hear that the Bills may be losing one of their key evaluators following this year’s draft. Tom Modrak, the team’s assistant general manager, is likely the odd man out as Buffalo’s front office continues to cut ties to the Tom Donahoe era. If Modrak departs, the biggest beneficiaries are director of pro personnel John Guy and vice president of football administration Jim Overdorf, who are responsible for more of the day-to-day operations and have been calling the shots as of late. Many league evaluators have raised their eyebrows at the amount of money Buffalo has thrown at free agents the past two years, from disappointing DT Larry Tripplett in ’06 to OG Derrick Dockery and OT Langston Walker in ’07. According to one NFL evaluator, “(L)ook at the pro acquisitions they have made and the amount of money they are giving to average players who have not panned out. … They have drafted well, and it was a good year to draft and develop offensive linemen, but they threw way too much money at free agents. I really question the direction of the team. I think they are taking a big step back with the players they’ve lost and (the ones they’ve) brought in.”

Oh, I'm supposed to reply...

"League sources say that we don't rate profootballweekly. League sources say that everyone at pfw are all girlie-men." :(

Please, pfw should be embarrased to quote "league sources", they may as well start telling me the latest with Brangelina, Britneyand K-fed and other great, great journalistic stories, always prefexed by a "source close to"... :)

truthfully speaking, any person who believes in reports from PFT will also be out overnight this Saturday night watching to see the Easter Bunny bring him candy

PFW = Pro Football Weekly, PFT = Pfffffffft

very different, one's reputable, the other's just pffffftt

I still find it difficult to believe...you don't dump Modrak without having someone else to take his place...it's not like he's refusing to negotiate a contract extension or getting into fights with other people in charge

All of these guys have distinctly different assignments reporting to the GM, Marv Levy. So what's the problem?

I think the perceived problem by outsiders is that what the Bills have in place isn't enough these days. I'm not saying they're correct because I like what I've seen for the most part. I mean they cleaned up about five years worth of garbage and made a better presentation of it in one year.

Again, I think they are saying that the Bills decision makers aren't doing enough homework and other teams have much better systems in place.

Oh, and for what it's worth. I think Modrak is a fine talent evaluator, that's what he's good at. He's not going to find talent sitting in the office in Orchard Park!

More than anyone else this is Modrak's team -- his handiwork. I wonder what is going on here.

Maybe he thinks it's time to go. The first draft he participated in, if I'm not mistaken, was 2001 which netted Clements, Henry, Schobel and Jennings and in retrospect was a monster. Three of those are now looking pretty good elsewhere. Maybe he thinks he is doing his part but his effort isn't being met by Ralph and company.

A lot of interesting things could be going on here that Pro Football Weekly chooses to wrap in nonsense.

Jeez, I'm so sick of the "sky is falling" national media outlet commentaries with respect to this team.

A couple of quick hits here, If I may:

1. I believe I am correct when i say that come the 2007 season, we'll have only 3 starters 30 and over and no one over 31 - youth;

2. After we draft or trade, almost the entirety of our starting defense we'll either be contractual obligated or restricted free agents for no less than 2, most likely, 3 years to come - stability;

3. Most of the current (Triplett), new (Walker, and McCargo - remember him) or possibly, soon to be (Willis) defensive players are compatible with our implementation of the Tampa 2 defensive scheme - experience or scheme knowledge;

4. There is little argument that our OL that got better last year (5-4 finish) was made, through free agency, better this year, and with a little depth - upgrade;

5. I have little doubt that either through a trade (Turner) or the draft (Lynch, Pittman) we will get a faster, more hands efficient RB that, at least for a little while, wants to be here - stability, consistency, youth, skill;

6. The guy protecting JPs blind side should probably come into his own this year as one of the best tackles in the business - experience, skill, stability, youth;

7. Cap wise, we are going to be in a good position after this year to sign JP and Evans (should they flourish) which along with our upcoming draft moves, FA so far, and our recent signings will contractually obligate a majority of our improved and improving OF for no less than 2, most likely, 3 years to come - stability;

8. We are getting back the NFL's 11th rated QB, along with our "should have been a Pro Bowler" WR - youth, stability, experience, skill and I could go on and on.

Please forgive me for not feeling worse about my team, its direction and its leadership.

Can anyone tell me how we go about signing Lavaar Arrington or Chris Brown? <_<

I'm still holding in a few worries until after the draft, but for the most part this is a fantastic post. A+

I like this fine but why in the world would we want to bring in Lavaar Arrington or Chris Brown? Enough of second rate guys who couldn't cut it on other teams and who can't find a team to sign them. They're just names...but they've not been successful enough to take a risk on - particularly Lavaar. Brown possibly - but we've already got our 2nd string back and there are better options for our first.

I think your right but Modrak, Overdorf, and Guy were here under Donahoe and the "experts" in the media did not have a problem with out front office. The difference now is in the contrast on how Marv runs the organization versus how Donahoe did. TD had a tendency to play to the media and make the big exciting moves. Under the surface, TD did not have a plan. If he did he did not stick to it, and he has extremely autocratic in executing it.

I believe that Levy has a three year plan to build a Super Bowl contender. I think his moves this year have been excellent. It is easy to look at all the big names that have left this off season (Clements, Fletcher, Spikes, McGahee) and then think that our talent level has dropped significantly. After draft and once the season starts I believe the only player we will really miss is Clements. We are going to replenish the LB and RB position. We have strengthened both lines with off season moves. We are bringing in good character players and I think there is a plan to build a core of players that peak at the same time.

I just seems to me that Ralph Wilson has become a easy target for the media and any chance to take a shot at him or his team is considered fair game.

I agree completely, disco. You can't see it but my emoticons eyes were rolling.

I just was using those two as examples of what gives todays NFL bloggers the warm and fuzzies with respect to what teams should do.

Additionally, I wish I could remember it exactly, but I remember Marv Levy's press conference after the draft last year when one of the reporters seriously questioned the Bills' picks and (I believe) stated that most NFL analysts said it was a bad move and Marv simply replied that he trusts his scouts and staff for putting the Bills together more than NFL analysts.

I might be a little off on that but that is essentially what happened.

Priceless! Nice job, Marv. Although i would hate to lose Modrak, but I'll believe his gone when I see it.

If memory serves, he was hired shortly after the 01 draft. The first one he participated in for the Bills was 02.

I think you are right. For sure, Dwight Adams and his staff were on board in 2001.

But he has had a front row seat to this club being used as a farm team (maybe).
