Point: for profit reasons, kids are fair game these days. A sociatal failing that that is winked at. Heaven help the fool that balks - you get called a neocon. My parents would have gone after the purveyors with torch and pitchfork. But I guess today's parents - the 50% who are not divorced - are more enlightened...what's wrong with that?.

exactly. I am amazed people are telling me I should feel ashamed for liking something or not liking something. I am old enough to decide for myself what I chose to like or dislike. Is anyone going to get on me because I hate radishes?

yes that is fine..but you do not end it with insults of the people who do like him..i understand he is not for everyone..but some of these fools make me laugh by thinking they are smarter for not listening...

Serious question, no flame: do the satellite receivers have parental controls like the internet (through software) and cable tv? Can you prevent kids from listening to certain stations?

yes, it does. It has Channel lock feature

What exactly does this do for anyone?  Do you pull over to the side of the road and rub one off?  I think Stern is a jack ass.  He tells every pornstar/slut/stripper that he would bang them and then proceeds to have them participate in lude activities.  I don't think this takes real genious.

Spoken like someone who has listened to a snippet here and there and never given the full show an opportunity. That's OK though...you're certainly not alone.

which do you think is worse - actually liking Stern or the lack of shame for publically admitting you like Stern?

It's a tough call...

Actually, one of my older brothers loves Stern. We talk quite often, and every once in a while it will come up, and I just don't have the heart to say "You're 48 years old. WTF are you listening to that childish crap for?"

But the truth is, a lot of people think listening to women fake orgasms on the radio is cool. Apparently it is because Stern has such a large following. Someone commented in this thread that he's a great interviewer because he asks the questions people really want to ask. The only question I've ever heard him ask was "How big is your dick? Do you masterbate in the shower?" If these are questions everyone really wants to ask, then I'm in the minority and clearly have poor taste. But that won't keep me from ignoring him.

Like I said, you can't argue with success. He has a big following. But so did Jim Jones. So I just choose to turn it off and take occasional stabs at people who listen to him religiously.

It was his constant bitching about the FCC that got old.

This is exactly right. It got very old. It is just like GR all football season bashing the Bills because of the way the Bills were treating them. I really didn't care how GR got treated by the Bills. I wanted to talk about what the Bills on the field issues were, and I also could care less about Stern's FCC problems.

I'll admit most of my exposure to Stern has come on the TV when they used to show a 1/2 hour portion comprised mostly of skin. When I did tune in to the radio, it was usually more of the same. I think the fact that I hate all things NYC, I never wanted to give it a chance.

I think it's easy to over-simplify Stern's show. I'm willing to bet that people who criticize it as being solely focused on porn star interviews have never actually listened to an entire day's show -- or better yet, listened for a week to get the full flavor of what goes on. The TV show is likely to blame for much of the negative opinion, as it only catered to the radio show's lowest common denominator. It should have been called "Worst of Stern" as far as I'm concerned.

What I found out a long time ago is that I enjoy about 60-70% of the radio show. The "Whack Pack" pranks, song parodies, skits, news items, musical guests, a decent portion of the interviews, and just the cast's general bashing of each other, are all pretty funny. Like it or not, Howard is a very smart and funny guy.

When I hear someone like LABillz -- a person whose perspective I generally share -- say he doesn't "get" Stern, I'm surprised, because the porn star stuff is really only a small part of what Stern does, and there have been many times when I have been listening to Stern and laughing so hard I was crying. I only listen to his show for about 20 minutes a day while driving to work in the morning, and during that time I'd say I'm laughing or smiling for at least 10 of those minutes.

In any event, there's an old saying that goes, "to each his own." I don't feel embarrassed or ashamed to spend 20 minutes of my day listening to the Howard Stern show, and I think I'm a pretty well adjusted individual.

Researcher: The average radio listener listens for eighteen minutes. The average Howard Stern fan listens for - are you ready for this? - an hour and twenty minutes.

Pig Vomit: How can that be?

Researcher: Answer most commonly given? "I want to see what he'll say next."

Pig Vomit: Okay, fine. But what about the people who hate Stern?

Researcher: Good point. The average Stern hater listens for two and a half hours a day.

Pig Vomit: But... if they hate him, why do they listen?

Researcher: Most common answer? "I want to see what he'll say next."

It's not that I don't "get" Stern. I do get Stern. I used to listen to him all the time. He's a guy with a mic and a schtick and it works for him. It just took a while for me to realize that I was listening to him because it was the thing to do. Like watching "Survivor" or hoping Playboy would do just one more Pamela Anderson spread.

Then one day he had one of his buddies doing his basic Ask A Celebrity a Stupid Question interview and I just couldn't take it any more. It's one thing to try to make people laugh, but it's an entirely other thing trying to just piss someone off. I don't see the humor in any of it.

I'm not a Stern fan - he stuff just doesn't really entertain me all that much. I have Sirius and I don't listen, but it seems everyone else does (seriously - if you're stuck in traffic in the morning, tune your radio to 89.7, the default for most Sirius radios, and you'll pick up Stern most of the time - you don't even need to subscribe!).

I must say that I like the fact that he's not as mean spirited as some of his wannabes. It's one thing to make fart jokes, but I hate it when a metally retarded person or some other hapless soul is just picked on - I hated Opie and Anthony for that.

I do respect Stern for knowing his audience and his critics and getting them what they want. He keeps himself at the top by making sure his fans love him, his critics hate him and people are always talking about him whether you like him or not.

Many, many, many, many years ago, I listed to Stearn for a short while and I thought he was, ocassionaly, moderately funny. But, he shtick grows old pretty fast. To me, he's professional wrestling.

I don't care that he's dirty...hell, I LOVE dirty. I care that he's not funny. Hell, I have 10 friends funnier than Howard.

But, people like him and he gives them what they like...HooRay! Another blow to intelligent culture in the good old USA.
