A week ago I would have agreed with this statement as the show had become excessively soapy; Sayid loves Shannon and Jin loves Sun and Jack loves Kate but Kate loves Sawyer but Sawyer loves Ana, etc etc etc blah blah blah. Last night I was happy to say them take a distinct turn away from this kind of filler. I seem to think it didn't kill him(Mr. Eko) because he didn't back down (similar to Locke last season). The black smoke didn't leave Mr Eko alone because of who he was or because of anything Mr. Eko did; the black smoke left Mr. Eko alone because of something that was in Charlie's bag which he had left at Mr. Eko's feet before he climbed the tree. BTW - Hurley and Libby...anything going on or were those just friendly smiles? To me it seemed that thre was mroe in her smile. What makes this episode unusual is that Eko may have been the first character (maybe Locke too?) to resolve his guilt and to forgive himself. This is in stark contrast to Charlie, who can not forgive himself, and is in fact "literally" storing and building-up his guilt (hiding of the statues). The question for me is, what is the black cloud? Is it a real phenomena? Is it metaphysical? Or, are all the people on the island in a "matrix" type atmosphere where they are placed in a virtual world to face their demons - or experimented on? Therefore, everything is virtual - but real, in that the thoughts of an individual can be seen by others. The subjective becoming objective - a F'ed up group therapy? This goes back to my play on John Locke's name. As we discussed before, John Locke, the philosopher, was an "idealist," meaning that reality is what is perceived. What if the subjective nature of Lockean reality becomes objective - i.e., everyone experiences eathother's thoughts and can manipulate them. Maybe that is why Walt had to be removed - he could manipulate other's reality (make things happen) too easily and screw up the whole process. Sure it could be on its way to australia from nigeria, but the oceanic flight was going from australia to sydney. The type of prop isnt going to make a cross-pacific flight. It apparently did the same to Locke when it "looked him in the eye". Another thing to consider, remember during the episode "The other 48 Days", Goodwin said only the GOOD people were on the list and being "taken". Well, they tried to take Eko on the first night, but he killed them. According to that logic, it would mean Eko was already redemed (maybe the work he did as a priest before hand) even though his back story made him look like an evil mfer...(till the end). Cable, you made a good point about the 40 days. Isn't that also how long Lent lasts? I thought that is what it was really for, repenting for his sins. Final note...the guys that Eko bought the Heroin from in the beginning. Did you notice them? They weren't South American, they were Middle Eastern. But at least the black rock, COULD have been sailing in or around that area of the world. The point with the plane is that realistically it shouldnt be anywhere near there. What about Ecko somehow "willing" the plane to be on the island, so he could make peace with his dead brother? Others have seen things, had things happen to them, so maybe somehow Ecko's presence on the island was what brought the plane there in the first place. Finally, it was good to see some of Ecko's back story, but we still need some more information. We dont know why he was on the flight to LA.
