Greg Rousseau has turned out to be a complete slug.

I like that we're mad about Rousseau not getting to the quarterback but glossing over that his running mates are a one-handed Joey Bosa, AJE, two wildly inconsistent rookie DTs, Jordan Phillips, Phi Mathis, and Javon Solomon. I would honestly not be surprised if this dline only recorded 10 more sacks for the rest of year.

He should not be making more than 12 million per year

My post magically disappeared. Let’s try this again. It’s a bad idea to pay role players as if they are high end starters. The Bills did it with Rousseau and Bernard. They did it with Knox before that. Those are the guys that you let walk and find role players much cheaper.

You want Batman with the 30th pick in the draft or later?   Then you've got to be willing go to dark places that McBeane do not want to go.   The Chiefs found guys like Tyreek and Chris Jones because they were willing to take character risks.   Rousseau was anything but that.   His floor was high and that's all they've been able to get because they haven't been able to put enough other talent on the DL.

Beane looks at players in a vacuum. If we sign this player now, it has to be cheaper than if we sign them when his contract is up. But he never factors in how common it is for a player to regress when they get paid or how much extra juice you tend to get in a contract year. I wish he would just let most of these guys play out the deals, get the additional information, and then make a decision.

Problem is its easier for the O line to blow up the guys next to him or on the other side. I still feel a true 1 tech in the middle eating space is more valueable we care to find. If you can jam the middle rushing the ends is much easier task because there is less routes to get away.

And yet, with that contract he's still their second most valuable asset behind Allen.    He's a top 30 player at a premium position and a guy one could easily see playing another 10 years in the league.   The bar is high because Allen has continued to will them into contention the past few seasons and contenders typically have a number of elite talents.  The Bills just have the one.   Rousseau isn't a $40M-$50M edge but he is in a much different category than Bernard.

They have an easy out after 2027 too. I just don’t see a lot of value in $20M+ 8 sack guys. I’d rather have a $5M 6 sack guy.

We can attack each other and accuse one another about who knows football and who doesn't all we want. The fact is that somewhere in the middle is the truth. Is he great? Probably not. Is he good?  I'd say so....at some things. Is it scheme? Could be that too. We are all seeing a defense that is under performing and at spots overpaid perhaps. It sucks. Ohh well we're not going to change anything. I'm a prisoner of the moment during games but I'm not forced to watch.

Well, that's the market for 8 sack guys who do little else.   Rousseau isn't that.  He's been the best run defending edge in the NFL since he arrived in the league and finished top 10 in the league in TFL last year.   They just gotta' put something competitive on the other side.   They haven't been able to do that.   His $20M won't limit that.

There are 3 players who haven’t been negatively affected by getting paid: Ed Oliver, Spencer Brown, James Cook. That’s it. Everyone else who got a bag has taken a step back and become lesser versions of themselves. Don’t know if the hunger is gone, or if they’re just too comfortable, but I don’t think this is what Beane imagined when he was handing out contracts.
