Im Polish and Italian… my ancestors assimilated. 
 

Somalians in Minnesota who don’t speak much English and only associate with other Somalians, not so much.

Do you think assimilation is an overnight process? 
 

Buffalo had separate newspapers in Polish and German for immigrants. Masses at St. Stanislaus are STILL in Polish to this day. St. Anthony’s has an Italian mass.
 

Up until recently, you could even find signs and such in Polish on the East Side. 
 

Immigrants concentrate in areas with their own kind, so much so that areas get named for ethnic groups. Buffalo has Kaisertown, Polonia, and the First Ward as examples. And why wouldn’t you? Why wouldn’t you live in a strange new country with people that know you and your culture?

I don’t care if immigrants go to church and their pastor speaks a native tongue.  
 

I do care if they have been here generations and can’t speak English. 
 

I do care if they’ve been here generations and live off government welfare programs. 
 

I do care if they’ve been here generations and put their native flag before ours. 
 

I’ve gone to San Gennaro festivals, I’ve gone to Polish bakeries.. nothing wrong with celebrating your heritage.   None of that comes before being an American.  
 

Genuinely asking.. what benefit does America in 2025 have to importing third world migrants?

 

This isn’t a condescending question.. what do you believe the benefits are?

 

Because data shows they are not assimilating and they are, in large part, living off the government. 

Do you think it’s beneficial to society to have neighbors that don’t speak English?  Is that good for the fabric of our society?  Because JD is 100% correct that it is not.

As I said, it took DECADES before the Buffalo Volksfreunde and Dziennik Dla Wszystkich went under. That’s more than going to church, that’s a regular news outlets in a foreign language. 
 

Please stop using the word “importing” as if people are nothing more than a can of tomatoes. Immigration, at minimum, brings new families and business owners that fill the vacant storefronts and homes that litter Buffalo. Ever been to Buffalo Fresh on Broadway? A totally abandoned old Rite Aid that’s now a thriving supermarket. 
 

Both of my neighbors are immigrants. Both have good jobs and families and are a delight to live next to. One even brought my garbage cans in for me last night when I had to work late.

The only reason we’re not where they are is because, language aside, Latino migrants do have cultural commonalities with Western culture.

My mother's father came over from Poland around 1910 (he was born in 1888).  Not educated, and was a tinsmith at Buffalo Forge. He told us that he came here only knowing a few words of English.  Talked to people  and read newspapers to learn English. This was before talking movies or radio or ESL classes. Managed to raise a family of 9 kids. Her parents would only speak Polish at home.  In the 30's,my mom who was under 10 then, and her sibs made them speak English all the time. Only my grandparents had a Polish accent.  When Polish was spoken at family get-togethers, us kids knew the adults were talking gossip.

My polish and Italian immigrant grandparents refused to speak their native language to anyone except each other.
