Very interesting read. Clearly the Bills value guys that can play in the box and deep covering the field and to be interchangeable. It obviously helps with disguising the defence from the QB a little more .

Man we had it good with Micah and Poyer and didn’t probably realize it as much at the time .

What’s also interesting

LAMP-

I certainly realized-  I’d been saying for years that once they’re gone, the D will miss them in a big way.  Good safeties are a key component in McDs D.  They don’t have to be great….they just need to have a great feel for the D and have good judgement.

If our pass rush sucks this year, something drastic needs to be done.

In reality, we’ve had a decent pass rush most years in terms of pressure rate, but like everyone else on that side of the ball they fold and/or get hurt in the playoffs.

Bosa - Jones - Oliver - Rousseau

On paper, that’s a Top 10 DL

Add in Hoecht and Epenesa as our DE3 and DE4, and I’d contend from what Hoecht has shown, that’s pretty strong as well.

Issue then becomes, do the rookies Jackson, Sanders and Walker give us anything?  And does Carter have any second year juice whatsoever.  Ogunjobi seems like vet insurance for Week 7 if the answer above is no.

When healthy, off-suspension, I think we have 4 plus guys in Bosa, Rousseau, Oliver and Hoecht.  Then a lot of unknown with Jones at his age and a bunch of rookies/second year players.

Given the investment, this Defense better have the pass rush juice of former years that you spoke of.

with the investment into our defensive line i remain concerned that it is not good enough.

agreed. and with the investment in capital for the draft + free agents over the last 3-4 years we have not got ROI

I was all about two 1 techs

One early who could move two and one from the bottom who could just not be moved. That's what we missed on the line.

I too am concerned it's not been solved by players or scheme tweak

The only problem with this is that we draft a guy who is like James Cook. Plays 2 downs but not who we want when it matters on 3rd.

We have tied a lot of investments up in halfway players. Albeit they're extremely good; Cook, Rosseau, Kincaid, Diggs. However, we need full players.

When you try to find guys who are good at everything, it often leads to having a player who isn’t great at anything. This is especially true when you don’t pay for a position in FA or draft high enough to pick elite skills or traits.

We tried that with Elam and whiffed. Still paying for that one. Hopefully Hairston rises to elite status

I think in the Elam pick there was interest in traits they wanted.  Speed, length, man coverage chops.  But he seemed to really struggle with his composure, tackling, zone concepts escaped him, and his confidence loss led to penalties.  Hairston would probably do better to be on the field, but its hard to compare players when the thing that most hurt elam's development was between his ears.

I believe he played soft, was always out of position and like you said: not so bright.

Beyond not so bright in picking up concepts - there was just a loss of confidence that you can't really teach/coach (nor should you be expected to at the professional level).

McD is running a rotation with the front 4 whether we like it or not. I would prefer players that are very good at run downs instead of mediocre player that do everything ( kinda )

I liked when D Jones was healthy. It showed up in games when he wasn't his full self or injured. and he is old.

Upgrade That , was my thinking.
