The Alaskan summit is scheduled for Friday, August 15th, in Anchorage, Alaska, between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The primary agenda is to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine, with Trump aiming to assess Putin's seriousness about ending the conflict. Concerns exist among Ukraine and its allies about potential sidelining of Ukrainian interests during the talks.

Here's a breakdown of the key aspects:

Location and Date: Anchorage, Alaska, on August 15th.

Participants: U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Key Issue: The war in Ukraine.

Trump's Stance: Trump has warned of "severe consequences" for Russia if Putin is not serious about ending the war. He also hopes the initial meeting could lead to a larger discussion involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Concerns from Ukraine and Allies: There are worries that Ukraine might be marginalized during the talks. Concerns also exist that the meeting could postpone or weaken sanctions against Russia.

Trump's Approach: Trump has described the meeting as a "listening exercise". He has also suggested that he might visit Russia after the Alaska summit.

The administration has gone out of it's way to avoid calling this meeting as 'negotiations' .

This one is just to assess Putin's seriousness about ending the war.  The following meeting would include Zelenskyy

Is this in Russia or Alaska?  I can't remember.  Also, it's a little late here.  I thought this war was supposed to end on Day 1 of Trump II.  Looks like Putin dragged it out and the demented negotiator in chief is going to try to sell out Ukraine to get a deal because Putin ate his lunch.  All of these MAGA vax whiners--freedom this, freedom that--are totally fine with sacrificing self rule to appease a Russian dictator.  Sick and sad.

Get over it. Stop whining.  Enough outrage.  Spend the time helping someone instead.

What agreed to terms and conditions do you believe will end this conflict? Let's start with the Elephant in the room. Russia wants to keep occupied Donbas and Crimea. Ukraine is adamant about not ceding any territory. Who blinks and what other concessions and considerations do they receive in return for blinking?

I don't see a resolution to this.

If Putin gives up any Ukraine territory he's going to have to justify wasting a generation of his population, destroying his economy for no good reason.

Zelenskyy absolutely does not want the legacy of giving up real estate to Russia.

So, both leaders are backed into a corner they can't get out of.

And there it is. An objective, sane, rational assessment of the situation from the perspective of both sides of the conflict. Kudos.

Russia leaves.  It ends.  Simple.  If not, then it goes on, unless Ukraine wants to throw in the towel and offer territorial concessions.  And the world should shun Russia either way.

If the war ends, does that mean elections will resume in Ukraine and Zelensky will be gone? I feel like he has a selfish reason to keep this on going as well.

Oh really? Like what? More TACO chump talk.

I do like how Trump did not blink on the nuclear blackmail nonsense and rattled his sabre right back by saying nuclear subs were moved closer to Russia. I remember all the MAGA people saying Biden was starting WWIII, blah balh.

Smart thing to do would be to arm Ukraine even more. Give them more weapons, supplies and economic aid. Let's stand with our friend and show them we will defend a fellow republic. Let that be our severe consequences. Really, force is the only thing Putin respects, not TACO talk

As Russia will never accept those terms without previously stated security guarantees a war of attrition goes on where the math favors Russia absent any direct intervention by Europe or America.

My dad used to lead lots of negotiations. Labor agreements, contracts, that kind of stuff. He said you need to do at least three things going in. 1) understand what you want out of the final deal and more importantly what the other guy wants. 2) defend your vested interests but be willing to concede points that you find non-critical or unimportant that the other side finds essential to the agreement 3) don't expect the other guy to agree to demands you make that you're in no position to make.

You did #3. Russia leaves. Ukraine continues to lose soldiers and territory over time as the Russians slowly grind forward and the longer they wait the more territory they stand to lose. More weapons won't reverse this trend.  @sherpa already explained this above no deal scenario.

Yes it will. You said you have to understand what the other guy wants, well Putin wants to win and thinks he can. Make it clear that he can't and won't win.

He's keeping the war going so he can stay in power. You're welcome.

Just like that? Tell Putin that if he doesn't back down the US will enter the war? And just go back to your place in the world order where we are empowered to dictate to you what you can and cannot do? And you obey.

That tough guy approach might work with the administration at Harvard but its quite likely it won't against Russia. Or China that is waiting on-deck to take Taiwan at a moment the US is occupied elsewhere.

Trump loves Putin, respects him, he has said so. Trump and Vance insisted that Russia didn't start this conflict.

He embarrassed Zelensky, he rediculed him, he sold him out, he pulled support, gave a little back, has stepped in front of EU efforts, in front of NATO, efforts, he has made Z promise not to attack Moscow while Putin demolished Ukraine cities.

Trump has threatened more sanctions, never enacted, now Putin has offered up Nuclear deal for Trump support so Russia can keep their gains.

More smoke...to cover the actual facts.

Never said enter the war, though....

But make it clear Ukraine will get whatever they need to not only survive, but grow strong. The approach we are on now, as you have pointed out, is going nowhere. Agreed?

You brought up Taiwan, what makes you think the Chinese are not looking at this situation and thinking our lack of resolve shows Taiwan is open for the taking if they are willing to stick it out like Putin?
