As a former Yahoo employee in Incident Management, when we had an incident that AOL Dialup was down, it was run at the highest, most critical priority. Turns out there were over 200,000 people still using AOL Dialup, in remote areas in the South where cable or fiber had not been installed yet. I'm hoping that those areas now have an alternative to dialup or they're basically cut off from a lot of available outside world things. a lot of the areas don't have it and being that land line telephone lines are not a priority for most people to get run to their house, especially in remote areas it's amazing how people either have to go with cable coax to the house or starlink. many people i know down around here sprung for star link during covid and don't regret it. 1 Quote
May Day 10 Posted August 11 Posted August 11 I remember the horror noise of calling someone who was connected to the internet through their phone line Quote
eSJayDee Posted August 11 Posted August 11 Actually, in 2019 I was looking for land just outside Albany NY (Greene County). Very little (like 15% of population IIRC) of that County had high speed internet available! Cellular internet wasn't much of an option either, so yeah, dial up! Of course, although I know a fair # of people w/ AOL email addresses, I wasn't even aware AOL had an actual "service", so low %age of need for dial up coupled w/ low number of users I can see how it's not viable/prudent to maintain a dial up option. frostbitmic Posted August 15 Posted August 15 AOL is still my email, it's the only one I've ever had. I think I had the dial up version from 00-03 and can still hear that sound in my head. Quote

AOL will end dial-up internet service in September, 34 years after its debut — AOL Shield Browser and AOL Dialer software will be shuttered on the same day | Tom's Hardware https://share.google/EBLLk7nkyvFAstPWb I wonder how many people that use dual up AOL also have phone-over-internet? 🤔 Quote
