The reason that Democrat in California, Illinois and the other don't respond with their own 'gerrymandering" is,

They have ALREADY drawn their own state to the extremes, they can't do anymore.

The playing field isn’t level yet, but it is getting there.

I mean I think gerrymandering on either side by drawing shapes similar to what my 18 month old would do if you handed him a shot of whisky and a box Of crayons is - and always has been - silly.

I mean, it seems shapes similar to ones we learn in basic geometry would make sense but since not all states are shaped like Wyoming or Colorado, districting was bound to have some issues and then you bring politicians in and it becomes absurd.

Yes, in a vacuum,  the timing here yet again puts a spotlight on Trump trying to “take” seats. But leave the vacuum and it happens on both sides in blue and red states.

So we either need to have a federal law that says “rhombus is as far as we will go” or learn to live with this as a fact of life. The former will never happen so politicians LEAVING their state to stop procedure is laughable and sets a horrible precedent. I’m honestly glad Abbott is calling this bluff because when dems want to do the same thing in the future I don’t want to see the opposite happen and this storming off to stop progress become the norm.

The is comedy. Its as if Texas Republicans are the first to utilize the political tool of Gerrymandering. Anyone paying attention knows Democrats have successfully employed Gerrymandering to gain electoral advantages in Congressional elections in several States. And the media is playing along. Parroting the story about Texas while conveniently failing to site already implemented examples of the practice by the party once against moaning about the sanctity of democracy. What a bunch of tools.

I think this is a potential learning moment. How about something like I won't do it if you won't do it. That sounds like a rational compromise. Any takers? No?

Now NY needs to do the same thing. Squeeze out the red districts like pus from a pimple.

They want to fight dirty? Fight back. Won’t be too hard in the Empire State. The GOP voted against a bill that would have ended gerrymandering anyways. They only want to do it for themselves.

It's not so much the gerrymandered districts; it's the attempt to force through a quick/unprecedented redistricting in response to Trump's call to do so for purely partisan reasons. There is nothing to stop this from happening all around the country, including attempts to draw districts that result in two incumbents in one district. That happens sometimes, but due to population declines, etc., and not in response to a brazen/calculated attempt to rig the entire process. Sure, you can say this has always happened to a lesser degree and with lip service paid to things like shared community ties or Supreme Court-mandated racial concerns, but this is a step beyond. And as we've seen many times already, once one side gets away with it the floodgates are opened.

Whatever one thinks of the Texas Dems, no one on either side should applaud this attempt to even further politicize redistricting. It is the ultimate "the congressman chooses his voters instead of the voters choosing their congressman." It's shameful and it ought to be called out as such.
