My belief is when an individual, like you, lies or attempts to spread false stories, it's typically the result of some other upheaval or chaos in their personal life. Perhaps you have issues with a partner---deception, separation, divorced, illness---or some sort of challenge in your career or other legal issues. Maybe a DUI, maybe it's as simple as an inability to meet monthly expenses due to poor household budget management. Or, maybe you've just decided to be a d-bag. Hard to say.
