As a rookie who started all 14 games in 1973, he threw a total of 164 passes and completed only 73 for 939 yards.  But he transformed into a dangerous QB by the early 80s.  Sadly, the loss of Chuck Knox killed his Bills career and he was traded to the Lions after only 2 wins in 1984.

Happy Birthday Joe. I still think if Joe was healthy in the 1980 divisional round vs the Chargers instead of playing on a badly sprained ankle the Bills win that game. Then they would have played the Raiders at home in the AFCCG. They had beaten Oakland 24-7 earlier that year at Rich Stadium. Good chance the Bills go to the Super Bowl if they had gotten past the Chargers.

I think he actually had a fracture in that ankle, one of the toughest performances I’ve ever seen.

My enduring memory of Ferguson was watching him come off the field after a failed play p!ssed off and angrily pulling off the chin strap on his helmet. Loved his competitive fire but in the end he was a pretty damn good QB playing in an era of great QBs.

One of the finest moments of Ferguson's career was in a game at the Orange Bowl in 1983, which was also was the first career start for Marino in the NFL. 5 td's and 419 yards passing

Happy Birthday Joe!!!

A fine QB and a fine person.

One of the earliest celebrity TV bass fishermen was Bill Dance who had a popular syndicated TV show, Bill Dance Outdoors.

I remember one episode that Fergy was his guest and he flew the Bills colors. You could just see what a humble, down to earth, good person Fergy is.

One of my all-time favorite Bills and pound for pound, the most powerful arm of any Bills QB.

I remember that game... Dan Manucci came in, he was totally ineffective and Fergy had to come back totally hobbled...  that was a horrible loss for us because I do believe we would have beat Oakland... I remember dominating them at home... I also remember the Home Oakland game was on TV cause it sold out...!
