And the 2024 Race Begins

THE ONLY REASON COULD BE RACISM:

WaPo columnist: If Biden retires and Harris doesn’t get nominated, watch out.

The choice of Kamala Harris was Joe Biden’s bid to paper over anger among Democrats over nominating another old white man in a cycle where their activists wanted a “diversity” ticket. Harris was supposed to carry that effort herself, but proved so inept and incompetent that Tulsi Gabbard demolished her in the early debates.

Harris couldn’t even make it to Thanksgiving, let alone an actual primary contest, and yet Biden picked her anyway expressly as the future of the party.

In the three years since, Harris has proven even worse at politics. She manages to make Biden look coherent, no easy feat. As the party’s presidential nominee, Harris would prove utterly disastrous, and at least some Democrats know this.

But if Biden retires and the party doesn’t nominate Harris, all of the bad blood over the diversity promises of 2020 will explode. That will be especially true if the party nominates Gavin Newsom instead, who notably angered the black and female activists in the party by appointing Alex Padilla to fill out the rest of Harris’ term in the Senate rather than another black woman.

This won’t be a Kennedy-Carter contest but an explosion of identity-politics grudges and fury, much more 1968 than 1980.

I mean, sure, she’s totally unqualified. But so was Biden, and the establishment carried him across the finish line.

More Than Three-Quarters of Americans Say Biden Would Be Too Old to Be Effective If Reelected

by Brittany Bernstein

Seventy-seven percent of Americans say President Biden would be too old to be effective if he were reelected in 2024, according to a new Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs poll.

Sixty-nine percent of Democrats said Biden, who would be 86 at the end of a hypothetical second term, is too old to be effective for another four years. Eighty-nine percent of Republicans said the same. Biden became the oldest president to take the oath of office when he was sworn-in in January 2021

Not what I said, but reading is tough I guess.

I said that the prosecutions are not an effort to remove Trump from the ballot. They are efforts to enforce the law.

BIDEN VS. TRUMP, BY THE NUMBERS

The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday on its own extensive poll on Joe Biden and Donald Trump. The article begins:

Voters overwhelmingly think President Biden is too old to run for re-election and give him low marks for handling the economy and other issues important to their vote, according to a new Wall Street Journal poll that offers a stark warning to the 80-year-old incumbent ahead of the 2024 contest.

Specifically:

73% of voters said they feel Biden is too old to seek a second term, compared with 47% of voters who said the same of the 77-year-old Trump. Two-thirds of Democrats said Biden was too old to run again.

Emphasis added. And, remarkably, only 36% of respondents think Biden is “mentally up for the job.”

Biden also scores poorly on the issues. He is under water on the economy, 37%/59%, with respondents saying the economy has gotten worse rather than better in the last two years by 58%/28%. Biden is under water on inflation and the cost of living, 34%/63%, and on the border, 30%/63%.

So voters think Biden is too old to run, isn’t mentally capable of being president, and has done a terrible job on the economy and the border. With those numbers he can’t possibly be re-elected, right?

Wrong, if he runs against Donald Trump. The Journal poll finds the two men tied at 46%/46%, despite Biden’s horrific drawbacks. Why? Voters think Biden is more likable and more honest, and a lot of them think Trump is too old and not up to the job, either. And, of course, a great number of them simply hate Trump, for various reasons.

Also, if you wonder how Biden can possibly be competitive, part of the answer is that Democrats don’t care about the same things you do:

Democrats plan to rally supporters behind issues such as abortion rights, which proved a key factor in the party outperforming expectations in the 2022 midterm elections. Abortion was the top priority among Democrats in the Journal poll, with 16% naming it as the issue most important to their 2024 vote, ahead of the economy and climate, which each stood at 12%.

Now that abortion has been returned to the states, it makes no sense for it to be your number one priority in a presidential candidate. Nevertheless, this is where we are.

But here is the point: the Democrats aren’t going to nominate Joe Biden.

They are just hoping he can limp through the next year so they don’t have to deal with Kamala Harris. Gavin Newsom is 25 years younger than Biden, isn’t burdened with Biden’s record in office or his growing scandals, and is a far more plausible demagogue and liar than Biden. If nominated, as I think he will be, and if Trump is the GOP nominee, Newsom will crush him. The only Democrat against whom Trump can run a competitive race is Joe Biden.

WHEN TOOLS WEAR OUT:

Van Jones: Who *really* wants to give Grandpa six more years?

“People are scared to say anything about it,’ CNN analyst Van Jones declared yesterday, ‘but I think it’s important to have this conversation now.’

Actually, it would have been better to have this conversation among Democrats three and a half years ago.”

The biggest donor group in Democratic politics privately moves against No Labels

Politico, by Holly Otterbein

A powerful network of liberal donors is joining the push to stop No Labels’ threatened plan to launch a third-party presidential run — warning major political funders to stay away from the group.

The donors club, Democracy Alliance, shared its thinking about the bipartisan organization’s operation exclusively with POLITICO. Democrats have grown increasingly concerned that an independent No Labels ticket would function as a spoiler and help former President Donald Trump or another Republican candidate defeat President Joe Biden in 2024.

WATCH: James Clyburn Fires 2024 Warning Shot at Joe Biden as Kamala Harris Gets More Bad News

5dad6068-165d-4ad3-bda5-68b0fcaec8b0-105

We reported over the weekend how President Joe Biden was hit with a wave of more bad polling news, with an ABC News/Washington Post poll giving him a 64 percent disapproval rating with voters on the economy (and showing him trailing 10 points behind Trump in a general election match-up). An NBC News poll showed Biden down by double digits among key Democratic voting blocs and with a 72 percent disapproval on the economy.

Something not widely reported on but also of obvious concern to the Biden-Harris campaign was Vice President Kamala Harris' net favorability rating. NBC News had it at 31% positive and 51% negative, which was worse than what they showed for Biden and Trump.

Former House Majority Whip and current Assistant Democratic Leader in the House James Clyburn (D-S.C.) appeared on "Meet the Press" Sunday to discuss in part the ongoing polling woes of Biden and Harris headed into 2024 and what he thought it meant for the campaign at this stage in the game.

Reading between the lines there you can see a subtle warning shot sent to Biden, which is: Don't even think about dropping her off the ticket, buddy.

Clyburn, as readers may remember, was instrumental in pressuring Biden in 2020 on the issue of nominating a woman of color as his running mate as a condition for his support. And Clyburn's announcement in late Feb. 2020 that he backed Biden prior to the South Carolina primary was considered pivotal to Biden's "comeback" in the campaign.

Sen. Tim Scott's Latest Political Ad Draws a Line on What It Means to Be Pro-Life

By Jennifer Oliver O'Connell

Scott is authentically and unapologetically pro-life. You can tell it's not an intellectual exercise to him. Blacks and Hispanics are disproportionately targeted by the death merchants (see, Sanger, Margaret) for abortions under the guise of economic freedom. What boggles my mind is that Black Democrats and Black activists are always screaming about targeting POCs and genocide, when they allow this genocide in their midst and do not bat an eyelash.

Scott is not only calling his fellow Republicans out on this issue, he is calling the Left out, and his personal story, coupled with his record is a strong testament to the strength embodied in the message.

Scott is working hard to forge his own path in this presidential primary madness. While he will be a part of the second presidential debate at the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, California, polling still has him trailing behind tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, and former Pence. On his personal story, clarity of vision, and legislative record alone, he should be doing much better.

'He seems super old': NY Times discusses concerns about Joe Biden

IMG_3027.thumb.jpeg.c404a2e62dda5a9e76ece339e93d3fc8.jpeg

FTA:

My own feeling is that these two issues are the bulk of why he’s doing so poorly in polls.

People are grumpy about inflation which the administration said would be transitory but wasn’t.

On top of that, the guy in charge seems old and slow and not really up to it anymore. That makes him vulnerable and it also means there’s probably nothing much he can do about it. Inflation may drop further but Joe Biden will be another year older before the next election and there’s just no way that helps him.

Interestingly none of the Biden supporters I interviewed mentioned “Bidenomics,” climate change, abortion, or social justice — the things Biden has staked out as the core of his platform — as the reason they voted for him in the first place and will again.

Two new Republican primary polls of the early nominating contests of New Hampshire and South Carolina have the same two top takeaways.

Former President Donald Trump enjoys a significant lead in both early states, and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley has established herself in second place — for now.

In New Hampshire, according to a USA Today/Boston Globe/Suffolk University poll, Trump gets support from 49% of likely Republican primary voters, Haley gets 19%, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis gets 10%, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie gets 6%, and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., both get 4%.

In South Carolina, meanwhile, a Winthrop University poll has Trump at 51% among Republican voters, Haley at 17%, DeSantis at 12% and Scott at 6%.
