Whaley devoted the first three picks to defense and found two depth players that become solid starters in Zach Brown and Lorenzo Alexander. I'll grant you Lawson was a gamble but Ragland was supposed to be a stud and Washington did well filling in for a suspended Dareus. What else did Whaley need to do for Rex? Where does it say that "Whaley did nothing" precisely? Not that it will matter, but I think the article is clearly written from a retrospective viewpoint, which makes sense since it was written after the last game of the season. That is, it's Sullivan's take on what actually transpired in 2016, rather than a regurgitation of what the outlook for the season was back in July. The Giants had nothing to gain because their playoff position was locked in. The Redskins had everything to gain because this game meant getting into the playoffs. The Giants played all their players except for their volatile receiver and they played the whole game with intensity leading to a win. New England played Miami yesterday in Miami. This was a meaningless game for the Pats because their playoff position was locked in. New England played their starters most of the game and they played hard all game. They won by an overwhelming margin. Compare the two above examples to the embarrassing Bills who had a coach who was vying for the open HCing position. The Bills played with no heart. They also throughout the game played with little intelligence. When Sully criticizes this historically lame organization for instilling a lack of accountability and maturity he is stating the obvious. This wretched organization reeks within its own culture of failure. Something is grotesquely amiss here. Pointing it out shouldn't be an issue. The players on the Bills, at least in most organizations, had something to play for too. In a word: jobs. As an NFL player it is never a good idea to leave your skidmarks all over the game film. Two of them played with heart and one team didn't. If that isn't an indication of the character of the disinterested team that lost in a boring game then you are oblivious to what is obious. How these teams played in each of their respective "meaningless" game says a lot about them. If that isn't a testament to the teams and their organizations then you are blind to what happened and what has happened over the past generation. Just because EJ was starting that doesn't mean the rest of the lineup should play like it doesn't care. The Bills have 24 UFAs, in the final game of a finished season self-preservation kicks in. They have all the film they need from the year. Why throw your body around and risk injury when you're trying to sign a new contract? They mentally checked out during the final week after their coach was fired. If you don't want to take note of the difference in the way more successful teams play compared to the stumbling Bills that is your prerogative. The Giants had nothing to play for from a playoff position standpoint. They played hard all game. The Giants (in addition to going to the playoffs themselves) were playing a bitter rival, for whom it was a "win or go home" game. The Jets yesterday were playing for nothing, unlike last year's finale which was "win or go home" for them. If the Jets needed that game yesterday, you would have seen a completely different approach from the Billls, just like you did last year. Ironically it's something Bucky and Sully usually advocate for rather than winning meaningless games like yesterday's. Lynn took over the team Tuesday. He was not being evaluated by that game. The Bills cannot admit they tried to lose a game but all indications show that's what they did. They made no attempt to catch up when they fell behind.
