The year of 2016 is coming to a close, and Hollywood is saving it's best for last. This is the final month for Oscar races, as the awards season will officially begin with the Golden Globe nominations being announced. Aside from that there will be big movies to end the year on a high note, as the Holiday season comes to an end. Like last December, audiences will be eager to return to a galaxy far, far away.

Disney continues the Star Wars saga, but for the first time it will not be dealing with the usual characters that everyone is familiar with. Well, almost all of them. This year we are presented with, "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story". The Rebellion makes a risky move to steal the plans to the Death Star, setting up the epic saga to follow. While this story is within the time frame of the Star Wars legacy, we are presented with many different characters. Nostalgia plays a key in nearly every aspect for fans with this movie. Mon Mothma, Stormtroopers with teeth, AT-AT's, and of course Darth Vader. A cast with recognizable, but not big names, and a "PG-13" rating just add to the intrigue. Starring Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, Diego Luna, Ben Mendehlson, Forest Whitaker, Donnie Yen, & James Earl Jones. Directed by Gareth Edwards.

Columbia Pictures is not afraid to have it's own big budget science fiction film this month. Especially when they have two of Hollywood's hottest actors in it. Jennifer Lawrence & Chris Pratt star in "Passengers". A spacecraft traveling to a distant colony planet and transporting thousands of people has a malfunction in its sleep chambers. As a result, two passengers are awakened 90 years early. Also starring Michael Sheen, Andy Garcia, & Lawrence Fishburne.

Regency Enterprises & 20th Century Fox present and Michael Fassbender stars in "Assassin's Creed". Based on the video game of the same name, When Callum Lynch explores the memories of his ancestor Aguilar and gains the skills of a Master Assassin, he discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society. Also starring Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons & Brendan Gleeson.

Will Smith stars in "Collateral Beauty". Retreating from life after a tragedy, a man questions the universe by writing to Love, Time and Death. Receiving unexpected answers, he begins to see how these things interlock and how even loss can reveal moments of meaning and beauty. The ensemble cast includes Edward Norton, Kate Winslet, Michael Pena, Keira Knightly, Naomie Harris, Jacob Latimore & Helen Mirren.

Ryan Gosling & Emma Stone star in "La La Land". A jazz pianist falls for an aspiring actress in Los Angeles. Also starring Rosemarie DeWitt, & J.K. Simmons. Directed by Damien Chazelle.

James Franco & Bryan Cranston star in "Why Him?". A dad forms a bitter rivalry with his daughter's young rich boyfriend. Also starring Zoey Deutch & Megan Mullally.

Denzel Washington directs and stars in "Fences". An African-American father struggles with race relations in the United States while trying to raise his family in the 1950s and coming to terms with the events of his life. Also starring Viola Davis, Mykelti Williamson & Jovan Adepo.

In the animated "Sing", A koala named Buster Moon has one final chance to restore his theater to its former glory by producing the world's greatest singing competition. Starring the voices of Matthew McConaughey, Resse Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane & Scarlett Johansson.

In "Office Christmas Party", When his uptight CEO sister threatens to shut down his branch, the branch manager throws an epic Christmas party in order to land a big client and save the day, but the party gets way out of hand. Starring Jason Bateman, Olivia Munn, Kate McKinnon & Jennifer Aniston.

Finally, in "Incarnate", A scientist with the ability to enter the subconscious minds of the possessed must save a young boy from the grips of a demon with powers never seen before, while facing the horrors of his past. Starring Carice van Houton & Aaron Eckhart.

I can't wait to see anything but this movie. Literally. I'd prefer to watch my cats dining on my own liver rather than see this movie.

I keep waiting for something I want to see, but the lists don't seem too appealing lately. Obviously I'll see Rogue One at some point, but I don't see much beyond that. I've got $50 in gift cards for one theater and two free passes to another that will continue to burn a hole in my pocket. The wife and I like going to movies together, but she's not a Star Wars person. I don't see any options for the two of us.

Passengers looks interesting -- but I'll go see just about anything with Jennifer Lawrence in it.

La-La Land is really terrific and a great movie to see with the wife (imo), it's more engrossing than it might seem from the trailer.

Moonlight is also really good though I don't think that's out nationally yet.

Is La-La Land noire-ish or more a retro romantic comedy type thing?

It's definitely a musical -- which I normally am NOT a fan of to be honest -- and definitely more retro romantic than noireish. Though, it's not really a romantic comedy.

I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did to be honest. It's light and a feel-good kind of movie.

Maybe I haven't been in a theater much lately, but I hadn't even heard of that movie until it was mentioned on the radio yesterday. I bet she'd be interested given your description, but I don't see it listed in either of the theaters I go to (I'm looking at showings for this friday).

Ah, yeah I don't think it's out nationally until the 16th. Just NY and LA at the moment.

That is odd, because I did see it posted as having a wide release on that date.

Apologies for the confusion.

One is a smaller theater with less screens, so that one at least makes sense. The other is your typical Regal though.

Not the right month but I figured I'd put this here rather than start its own thread:

New Spidey trailer:

Looking forward to it.

Michael Keaton as Vulture. Nice.

That friend of Peter's has the potential to become extremely annoying.
