Thanks for updating

For the less involved. Current Total defense rank 20th. Pass defense 15th. run defense 27th

The Bills are #2 in turnover differential at +8.

The Bills are currently 3rd sacks with 21..which BTW equals last years total after only 7 games.

So after week 8:

Yards per game allowed: Rank - 16th (Up 2)
Pass YPG allowed: Rank - 13th (Down 2)
Rush YPG allowed: Rank - 25th (Up 2)
Points per game allowed: Rank - 13th (Down 5)

3rd down %: Rank - 16th (Down 7)
Sacks: Rank - 1st (Up 1)
Takeaways: Rank - 9th (Down 2)

Points Per Drive: Rank - 15th (Down 7)
% of drives ending in scores: Rank - 20th (Down 9)

Another disappointing week and the stats match what it looked like watching the game - defense couldn't get off the field, couldn't make a stop on 3rd down and as a result gave up points every time the Patriots got hold of the ball. 3rd down percentage and the drives against stats reflect that.

I think what we are seeing is an effort to bolster the run game by having the safeties cheat up against the run and this leaves the corners in man coverage. Once Dareus gets back in there 100% healthy to help stop the run the team might be able to play more zone and give the CB's a hand.

Clearly, the defense has moved away from a constant two-gap scheme and moved towards a one-gap this year and thus the improvement in sacks. While this year the team is leading the NFL in sacks the Bills are not quite getting the pass pressure on the QB as they are 11th in defensive hurries.

Current total defense in yards 21st, pass defense19th, run defense 23rd. Currently #4 in turnover differential +7.

The Seahawks didn't bother running the ball and they still torched the DBs for almost 300 yards in 19 minutes of possession....

Some who post here seem to think Rex is a clueless defensive coach. Others still think he's good at defense.

I tend to think he's average, just like the numbers his D has produced this season.

What's interesting is that 2000 Baltimore defense that was so great Marvin Lewis was the DC, Jack Del Rio was the linebackers coach and Rex Ryan was the D-line coach while Mike Smith was his assistant. Yowsa!

The thing is after that #1 ranking in 2009 Ryan got the moniker as a defensive genius and that particular year and perhaps the year after that might have been true. Since then there has been a continuous drop-off in points allowed to around 20th for years for that Jets team and last year it was yards to around 20th for the Bills.

Just looking at the games that Ryan's defense has played for Buffalo haven't been able to slow down a QB with a winning record that year in 2015 or so far in 2016. Last years Bills defense couldn't get to the QB at all and was second to last in sacks. This year the team leads the NFL in sacks and yet can't seem to stop those average to better QB's. Not Fitz, Not Brady, Not Tannehill, Not Russell Wilson, Not Flacco.

The Bills still face Blake Bortles 2-8, Derek Carr 8-2, Ben Rothlisberger 5-5, Josh McCown 0-2, Tannehill 6-4, Fitz 3-7. At 5-5 past history says the Bills will win 3 and lose 3. At #12 overall in both PA-Yards is a step up from last season.
