They had been emphasizing player safety, namely injuries on returns, and then implement a rule which everyone (else) knows will make teams shy away from trying for touchbacks. Dumb. I never said that. The last seven fourth rounders have all proven to be decent NFL players and are all still in the league. Leaving aside the obvious incorrect bold statement, Sure--why not? Look at what the Bills have wasted 2nd round picks on. This guy just has to be really good at kicking PATs and FGs, and he is. Look at the misery the Bucs have had at kicker. I'm betting the new KO rule will be changed after the season when they realize it's leading to more returns and thus more chances for injuries. Which is opposite of what they want to see happen. This won't happen. The likelihood that every NFL kicker will now do something he has never had to do before after every score---from a tee, drop a kickoff within the 10 yard line without it rolling into the EZ (worse, OOB)--is really not a feasible proposition. It's as likely that the rule will be struck because there are few to no returns anymore and coaches complain. Couldn't tell you since I don't usually watch kickers in practice. To claim they never or even rarely practice them is silly. They know how to kick the ball. They'll adapt for the rule this year.
