I read an article suggesting the USGA should rethink their stance on "anchored" putting because of stuff like this. Personally, I think it's part of the game, and if your mental game isn't strong enough to get you over it that's too bad. Still sucks for Els and others like him though. Lots of blowups by big names yesterday; Spieth doesn't tee off until late and it will be interesting to see what the leaderboard looks like by then. And one gets a two stoke penalty for doing it. Would anchoring have helped Els? Doing it the old way? The option was always there for the players, even the greats if they ever got the yips. That is all I am saying. Just deconstructing it. I'd vote to go back, seems unfair to change it now. Belly putters were originally viewed as a gimmick, and since very few golfers used them (and won no tournaments) it wasn't an issue. Then the belly putters became more prevalent in the 80s and 90s, and started becoming mainstream. And golfers were winning with them. The traditionalists, I believe, have always felt they were beyond the true intent of the game. Golf is an odd sport, full of tradition and idealism that often belies common sense. Part of my job, as we were working on a par five with a fairway crosswalk, was to signal to the marshalls down the fairway when to close the ropes so no one else would walk into the fairway while players were preparing to hitting their tee shots. Darren Clarke, Els and Louis Oosthuizen finish on No 1 and I hold up the signal paddles to tell the marshalls to close the ropes. Just as Clarke puts his tee in the ground a group of three duck under the ropes and start across the fairway. Ol' Smiley Clarke turns around and stares at me along with Els (Louis seemed unfazed). Els says (paraphrasing) "C'mon man do your job. Get the ropes closed." Not wanting to forfeit my passes for the rest of the tournament, I say nothing but I sarcastically put the signal up again to close the ropes while security escorts the fans off the course. I put the jinx on Els and Clarke that day and just like that, the yips rear its ugly head. ... that or I had absolutely nothing to do with this?
