July Movies: Apes, Sex Tape, Lucy, & Hercules....

Recommended Posts

I like apes. I thought the first one was better but this one was still good. At first, the cgi apes seemed a bit too fake to me (or maybe it was that bear), but it was amazing how a good movie made me completely forget about that after a few scenes.

Exactly. That whole opening segment when we see how the apes live and communicate with each other is great. The subtitles add a certain depth to everything, as if we're watching a silent film.

I also got a chilling feeling from the scene when the apes go into San Francisco, and Caesar tells the humans that they don't want a war. That scene is brilliantly setup.

Mrs. Cletus said that you guys aren't being very helpful... Guess we are going to have to check it out... Hopefully this flick gives her inspiration to come home and git er done...

My apologies to Mrs. Cletus. All I can tell you is that I have no desire to see "Sex Tape", it's Rotten Tomatoes score is 20%, but movies like these aren't made to impress critics.

I suggest that Mrs. Cletus watch the trailer, which I've provided on the first post of this thread and then decide if she really wants to see it.

She created an account... Trolls... But won't post... The guys at the TBD-ANNUAL-HOT (did you like that Jack?) will have their work cut out convincing her to do so

Well if she needs some movie advice, I'll do what I can to help.

  • 2 weeks later...

Lucy was a disappointment. Might make for a decent late night insomnia cure in a few years on Fx, but on the big screen was just an 80 minute bore.

Funny how different folks see different things...wife and I saw it yesterday and while neither of us were blown away, it kept us entertained and was a unique take on a pseudo-scientific idea. If you were just looking to see Scarlett in skimpy outfits this wasn't the flick for you -- but she's still damn cute.

Anyway, I'd give it a 6 out of 10 -- in the average to slightly above average range. Who doesn't like a movie featuring some Morgan Freeman dialogue?

Lucy, probably good until, what 3/4 way through when gaping plot holes appear, repeatedly, huge holes, that make you wonder why you see it but those associated with the movie didn't. Worth it for SJ though.

Finally saw "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes". Absolutely loved it!

I know it's all CGI, but Andy Serkis is amazing. Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell & Kodi Smit-McPhee are fine in their respective roles, and an equally good performance by Toby Kebbell as Koba.

Great blend of action, drama & tension makes this story of survival excel. This is one of the best movies of the summer, probably one of the best of the year. It'll be tough to top this movie with another sequel already planned, but it'll be fun to watch.

People are going to have to start taking notice of director Matt Reeves, he did a great job with this one.

I haven't seen the new one yet...but Serkis seriously deserved at least an Oscar nomination for the first Apes. Lost in the CGI motion-capture was the fact that he conveyed Ceasar's thoughts and emotions via motion alone, enough to show through the CGI motion-capture.

THAT was acting as good as you'll ever see. I can only think he didn't get a nod because people couldn't decide if it was a performance or a special effect.

He also deserved an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Gollum.

I felt like it was the eyes telling the story most of the time in that one. I can see not being able to tell if that's Serkis or a computer.
